Those are serious reported experiences, but no major medical study has established that living near this mine caused any individual illness. The evidence so far consists of resident accounts, reported sound readings, general noise-health research and a still-unresolved nuisance case.
What is happening at Wolf Hollow?
TIME reported that Wolf Hollow began Bitcoin-mining operations in summer 2022. The facility uses large banks of cooling equipment, and nearby residents later described a continuous hum or roar. Sarah Rosenkranz, a Granbury resident interviewed by TIME, said: “We’re living in a nightmare.”

TIME said it spoke with more than 40 people in the Granbury area who described a medical ailment they believed was connected to the mine. That is an interview count, not a medically verified count of cases caused by the facility.

These are attributed reports. The coverage does not show that a clinician or controlled study linked each person’s diagnosis to Wolf Hollow. Symptoms such as headache, dizziness, poor sleep and nausea have many possible causes, so a temporal association is not the same as proof of causation.
What do the reported sound readings show?
TIME reported measurements taken at particular places and times, rather than a controlled, continuous exposure study.

Results from a consumer app, handheld meter or law-enforcement recording can vary with microphone calibration, distance, weather, frequency weighting, reflections and measurement technique. A single number therefore cannot determine whether a particular illness came from the mine.

What does medical research actually establish?
TIME explicitly reported that there had been no major medical studies assessing the health effects of living near a Bitcoin mine. That leaves a direct evidence gap for Wolf Hollow and similar facilities.
There is broader research on environmental and occupational noise. TIME cited German cardiologist Thomas Münzel, who warned: “The most spectacular cardiovascular diseases will develop.” His statement describes risks associated with prolonged noise exposure in the broader literature; it is not a diagnosis of Granbury residents or proof that Wolf Hollow caused their symptoms.
CDC/NIOSH material provides general context about loud-noise exposure and hearing risk, but it does not investigate Wolf Hollow, identify residents’ diagnoses or establish a mine-specific causal pathway. Sleep loss, stress responses and hearing effects are biologically plausible concerns, yet proving responsibility for an individual case requires clinical evaluation and well-designed exposure data.

Why the noise dispute is difficult to resolve
Residents’ account
Residents say the sound is persistent and intrusive, especially at night, and that it interferes with sleep and daily life. Their reported symptoms and personal measurements form the basis of the nuisance allegations and public campaign.
MARA’s account
In October 2025, KERA reported MARA’s statement that it had transitioned most of the site to immersion cooling and completed a sound wall. The company’s statement describes equipment and construction changes, not an independent finding that neighborhood exposure fell to a particular level.
What residents said after the changes
The Texas Tribune reported that residents believed the wall had done little to reduce the sound. That is a resident assessment after the company’s claimed mitigation, not a comparable post-mitigation measurement series.

The reviewed reporting does not provide an independently documented before-and-after set of readings taken under matching conditions. Consequently, the competing claims cannot be ranked by a common measurement record.

Earthjustice, which represents the residents, said on September 3, 2025 that a Texas state court had denied MARA’s motion to dismiss earlier that summer. The community group then sought records about plant equipment, mitigation work and noise data. Earthjustice senior attorney Rodrigo Cantú said: “MARA must be compelled to release critical information about its operations, which have already caused serious harm to its neighbors.” That is counsel’s description of the residents’ position in litigation, not a court finding of harm or liability.

The Texas Tribune reported residents’ view that Texas counties lack authority to set local noise limits while cities may have such authority. Those reports describe the legal and political arguments at that time. They do not establish the current status of the lawsuits, incorporation effort, election process or applicable statutes; readers should check current court and election records before treating any of those matters as resolved.
How to interpret claims about “Bitcoin mine noise”
- Reported experience: A resident says symptoms began or worsened after the facility opened.
- Measured exposure: Someone records a sound level at a specified place and time.
- Scientific association: A study finds a statistical relationship between a defined noise exposure and health outcomes.
- Causation: Evidence rules out competing explanations and shows that the exposure produced the individual outcome.
The Granbury reporting documents the first two categories and cites broader research relevant to the third. It does not yet establish the fourth.
If you live near a noisy industrial site
- Seek medical care for symptoms. Tinnitus, vertigo, severe headaches, chest symptoms and persistent sleep loss deserve clinical evaluation regardless of suspected source.
- Keep a dated log. Record time, location, weather, perceived sound, sleep interruption and symptoms. Note other potential triggers such as illness, medications, traffic or household equipment.
- Measure consistently. A sound level meter or decibel-meter app can help document personal observations. Use the same location, distance, settings and time pattern, and retain original files. A consumer device is not a medical diagnostic tool, proof of causation or guaranteed legal evidence.
- Report conditions through the appropriate channel. Preserve copies of complaints, responses and any public-records requests. A lawyer or local authority can explain what measurements and records are admissible for a nuisance claim.
The evidence-based bottom line
Wolf Hollow residents have described an ongoing noise problem and a range of troubling symptoms, and reported readings include 72 dB in a bedroom, a 91 dB peak near the facility and more than 35 readings above 85 dB recorded by a constable during 2024. Those details justify attention to noise, sleep and health—but they are not a controlled exposure study. As of the cited reporting, no major medical study had tested health effects of living near a Bitcoin mine, and no final ruling had determined that Wolf Hollow caused the reported illnesses.
