Residential leasing was the largest of three housing-specific job categories CRETI could confidently identify in its U.S. listings snapshot at the end of Q3 2026: 423 of 660 listings, or 66.7%. That means leasing led this defined subset—not every multifamily opening or all U.S. housing jobs.

Which housing job categories had the most active listings?

CRETI’s analysis of CareerHound data counted active U.S. listings on September 30, 2026. Among the three categories it identified as clearly housing-specific, residential leasing had the largest count.

Category Active U.S. listings on September 30, 2026
Leasing Residential Real Estate 423
Residential Building Construction 135
Real Estate Agents and Brokers 102
Total across these three categories 660

Residential leasing represented 66.7% of those 660 listings. The counts are active listings at a single point in time; they are not the number of people hired or all positions advertised during the quarter. CRETI’s Q3 2026 housing jobs analysis describes the data and category totals.

What does “led multifamily job openings” mean here?

The headline should be read narrowly. CRETI examined 117,353 active U.S. listings across selected real-estate and built-environment industries, but it could isolate only three categories as confidently housing-specific for this comparison. The 660 listings are an identifiable subset, not an estimate of all U.S. housing employment demand.

CRETI excluded the broad Real Estate category, which contained 39,384 listings, because its aggregate data did not distinguish residential or multifamily roles from commercial real-estate roles. Consequently, the available figures do not establish that leasing led every multifamily occupation, every apartment-sector role, or all real-estate openings. The 117,353 figure is also much broader than the three-category housing comparison and should not be treated as its denominator.

What advertised pay did residential leasing listings show?

CRETI found that 79.7% of the residential leasing listings disclosed a salary or salary range. The reported figures below are advertised compensation in listings, not comprehensive wage statistics or evidence of what employees ultimately earned.

Pay basis in listing Advertised pay reported by CRETI Sample or scope
Hourly $20 median; approximately $16.50–$24.50 middle-50% range Residential leasing listings reporting hourly pay
Annual $76,000 median; approximately $70,500–$87,500 middle-50% range 61 residential leasing listings reporting annual pay

The hourly and annual figures come from listings reporting different pay bases and should not be read as directly comparable compensation for identical jobs. CRETI’s report explains the advertised-pay data and disclosure measure in its Q3 housing analysis.

How does this compare with other Q3 real-estate hiring data?

In a separate Q3 report, CRETI counted 57,174 Construction listings, 39,384 Real Estate listings, and 15,035 Civil Engineering listings across its selected industries. Together those broad categories made up 95.1% of the dataset. They are industry groupings, not occupation-level alternatives to the 423 residential leasing listings. CRETI’s broader Q3 jobs report provides that industry-level breakdown.

The National Apartment Association’s Q2 2026 Apartment Labor Market Dynamics report offers a separate apartment-sector measure: 56,716 unique apartment job postings, up 13.7% year over year, with leasing and sales professionals up 12.1%. Because that report covers Q2, uses an apartment-specific scope, and counts unique postings rather than CRETI’s Q3 quarter-end active listings, it is context—not a direct confirmation or contradiction.
