Resident Evil’s Next Chapter: What Its New Film Says About Video Game Adaptations

Resident Evil’s first movie helped turn a game series into a durable film franchise, but its commercial success does not prove it set an artistic standard for every video game adaptation. The latest film takes a different route: instead of retelling a familiar game plot, it turns the games’ resource scarcity and rising danger into a new character’s survival story. The next test is whether a crowded slate of game-based movies can make their own worlds and mechanics work on screen.

Did Resident Evil set the standard for video game movies?

It set a commercial precedent more clearly than an artistic one. Capcom says the games began in 1996 and the first major motion picture arrived in 2002. The company reported that the 2002 film grossed $102 million worldwide, calling it an “extraordinary hit among video game film adaptations”—Capcom’s promotional description, not an independent verdict on its artistic influence. In a 2020 announcement, Capcom also said six films made through 2016 had collectively earned $1.2 billion worldwide. That total describes that six-film run, not every installment released since.

Those figures demonstrate the franchise’s reach and longevity. They do not show that the first movie caused today’s adaptation boom, or that later films and other game adaptations followed its creative formula. “Set the bar” is therefore a useful provocation, not a settled measurement. Capcom’s 2020 announcement supplies the company-reported history and totals; a separate early result for the newest film is a different measure entirely.

What makes the 2026 Resident Evil film different?

The film, directed and co-written by Zach Cregger, opened theatrically on September 18, 2026. Sony’s page describes Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams, caught in a catastrophic night. Cregger places the story in the world of Resident Evil 2 and Raccoon City, but follows another person through the crisis rather than retelling Leon’s story. Sony currently labels the film “Now Playing Exclusively in Movie Theatres.” Sony Pictures’ film page has the synopsis and current theatrical status.

That choice reflects a distinction between borrowing a game’s plot and adapting the pressures that make playing it distinctive. In an April 30, 2026 interview with PlayStation.Blog, Cregger said, “I wanted to do a movie that was following a character from point A to point B, because that’s what those games do so well.” He added, “So I wanted to tell a story that could take place in the Resident Evil world, but wasn’t telling a story that the games had already told.” These are the director’s stated intentions, not an independent critical assessment.

Translate the player’s pressures, not just the plot

Cregger has described drawing on scarce resources, deliberate movement through changing environments, and weapons that grow more powerful as danger escalates. Bryan begins with a pistol, keeps track of ammunition, gets injured, and uses healing items modeled on the games. A film cannot reproduce the player’s control or decision-making, but it can make the consequences of limited supplies and increasing threats visible. That is the adaptation’s central experiment: give a new character a film-specific journey while retaining the survival-horror rhythms associated with the games.

Resident Evil: Death Island - Blu-ray + Digital
  • In San Francisco, Jill Valentine is dealing with a zombie outbreak, Leon Kennedy is tracking a kidnapped DARPA scientist and Claire Redfield is investigating a monstrous fish. Joined by Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers, they discover the trail of clues from their separate cases all converge on Alcatraz Island, where a new evil awaits their arrival.

The Atlantic’s September 25, 2026 account contrasts this vulnerable, civilian-led approach with the seven earlier films, which it describes as leaning into heavy weapons, supernatural action, and large-scale spectacle. That comparison helps explain the change in emphasis; it does not establish one style as the definitive way to adapt a game. Cregger’s PlayStation.Blog interview discusses his choices, while The Atlantic’s interview and review supplies the comparison with the earlier films.

What does the new film’s opening say about its reach?

The Atlantic reported a domestic opening weekend upwards of $60 million on September 25, 2026. This is an early U.S. result, not a final worldwide gross or a lifetime total. It indicates a substantial initial theatrical audience, but it cannot by itself establish the film’s eventual performance or prove that one adaptation strategy is commercially superior.

  • A special military unit fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident.

Keep that figure separate from Capcom’s company-reported worldwide box-office figures for earlier films: the measures cover different releases, territories, and points in their theatrical runs. The Atlantic’s report does not provide a final global total in the cited passage.

How to judge the next wave of game adaptations

There is no single proven formula in the evidence here. A more useful comparison asks what each film chooses to preserve, and for whom it is designed:

Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness - Season 01
  • Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield reunite to investigate the connection between two zombie outbreaks in distant countries and uncover a threat that will shake the nation to its very core.
  • Story fidelity: Does it retell a game’s plot, follow a new story in the same world, or borrow only a premise?
  • Gameplay translation: Does it make mechanics such as exploration, resource management, or escalating danger legible in cinematic form?
  • Tone and audience: Is it built around horror, action spectacle, fantasy, animation, or family entertainment?
  • Commercial evidence: Are reported figures domestic or worldwide, opening weekend or lifetime, and company-reported or independently reported?
  • Release certainty: Is a date officially announced, merely listed in a release roundup, or still unannounced?

Resident Evil’s new film makes gameplay translation especially visible: it tries to turn conserving resources and facing worsening danger into suspense without repeating a familiar protagonist’s story. Other adaptations may make different trade-offs. The crowded calendar is a chance to see approaches tested across genres, not evidence that one property—or one method—has already solved the medium.

What’s next for Resident Evil and other game movies?

The next confirmed Resident Evil release is a game remake

Capcom announced Resident Evil Veronica, a remake of Code: Veronica, for 2027. It has not given an exact release day; the company said further details would follow. The platforms listed are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Capcom says the remake will reimagine the story while preserving the original’s appeal. The company reported more than 201 million cumulative Resident Evil game units sold as of March 31, 2026; that is a game-sales figure, not movie tickets or adaptation revenue. Capcom’s June 2026 announcement covers the remake and the cumulative unit figure.

Film dates are listings, not guarantees

PC Gamer’s current roundup lists Street Fighter for October 2026, followed in 2027 by Sonic the Hedgehog 4, The Legend of Zelda, and an A Minecraft Movie sequel. It also lists Death Stranding and Horizon Zero Dawn as 2027 projects without specific dates, alongside other announced films with no date. This is a secondary release calendar, and schedules can change; a listed year or month is not a guarantee of release. Check official studio announcements closer to a planned date for confirmation. PC Gamer’s roundup distinguishes scheduled titles from projects without exact dates.
