Choose Resident Evil Village if you want the earlier game in the series’ story sequence and a single adventure Capcom describes as mixing varied horror with more action. Choose Resident Evil Requiem if its paired Grace-and-Leon structure, selectable camera perspectives, and return to Raccoon City appeal more. Neither is an objective winner: they offer different reasons to play.

How their gameplay differs

Resident Evil Requiem: Grace and Leon

Requiem is the ninth main installment in the series, according to Capcom’s June 9, 2025 release announcement. Its two protagonists bring distinct emphases. PlayStation’s official game page describes FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft as operating with limited supplies, analyzing enemies to decide whether to fight or flee, and using blood-based crafting to make items, ammunition, and injectors. Leon’s side emphasizes firearms, a hatchet, melee attacks, parries, weapons taken from enemies, and customizable weapon parts.

Both characters support first- and third-person perspectives, so camera preference does not force you to pick one protagonist’s style over the other. The official listing also shows Standard and Deluxe editions and a free demo listing; check the current regional storefront for availability and contents.

Resident Evil Village: one adventure with varied horror

Capcom calls Village a sequel to Resident Evil 7 biohazard and describes it as offering “a variety of horror experiences, a greater degree of action, and even more expansive, highly-engaging gameplay” in its June 11, 2024 announcement. That is the publisher’s framing, not an independent or directly measured comparison against Requiem.

Should you play Village before Requiem?

If you care about story order, play Resident Evil 7 biohazard before Village: Capcom identifies Village as RE7’s sequel. Requiem’s story centers on Grace Ashcroft, daughter of a character from an earlier game, and on the truth behind the Raccoon City Incident; Capcom says the story runs through the series’ lore. Familiarity with earlier games may add context. The available official descriptions do not say Village is required before Requiem.

Which game is scarier?

The available descriptions support a contrast in emphasis, not a universal verdict about which is scarier. PlayStation’s description presents Grace’s limited resources and the choice to evade or engage as survival-horror pressures. A PC Gamer review says that at least at the start, Leon brings more action while Grace carries much of the horror, stealth, and puzzles. Capcom describes Village as balancing varied horror experiences with a greater degree of action. How frightening either game feels will depend on what kinds of tension affect you most.
