Resident Evil Requiem: How Its Horror Compares With Resident Evil 4 Remake

Resident Evil Requiem is designed to put horror ahead of action more consistently than Resident Evil 4 (the 2023 remake), but it is not intended to be an uninterrupted fear simulator. Capcom describes a deliberate rhythm of tension and relief. Grace’s chapters emphasize vulnerability, exploration and scarce resources, while Leon’s chapters provide more capable combat, weapon upgrades and modifications. The result is a game that contrasts survival-horror pressure with action-horror momentum rather than ranking every moment on a single scare scale.

That distinction matters because there is no controlled test or representative player survey proving which game is objectively scarier. The strongest available comparison is about design intent, pacing, perspective and resource management. Those elements make Requiem structurally closer to Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil 2 remake than to the action-forward feel associated with Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Village.

What Capcom says Requiem is trying to do

Producer Masato Kumazawa said recent entries such as Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 leaned heavily toward action. Requiem was developed as a return to a stronger horror focus. Director Koshi Nakanishi described the pacing as an alternation between pressure and recovery rather than a single, unbroken escalation.

In a January 29, 2026 interview published by PlayStation.Blog, Nakanishi put the idea this way: “Overall, this game may be scarier than Resident Evil Village, but it alternates between tension and relief, so it isn’t a continuous, suffocating experience.” The comparison in that sentence is specifically with Village, not with the Resident Evil 4 remake. It still explains the intended shape of Requiem: frightening stretches are meant to have breathing room, and action sequences are part of the pacing system rather than evidence that the horror has disappeared.

Requiem and RE4 Remake compared at a glance

Aspect Resident Evil Requiem Resident Evil 4 remake What the comparison supports
Primary emphasis Stronger horror focus, with survival and resource pressure central to Grace’s sections More action-oriented overall, with combat occupying a larger role Requiem is designed to feel more vulnerable during its horror-focused passages
Pacing Alternates tension and relief Action momentum is a defining part of the experience Requiem does not maintain maximum fear continuously
Grace New to confronting zombies; relies more on survival decisions and items than direct combat Not applicable Her sections are built around limited capability and uncertainty
Leon Has weapon enhancements and modifications, but still faces danger Action-oriented protagonist with a combat-focused design Leon provides a more assertive play style without becoming a guaranteed safe zone
Resources Grace is often short on ammunition Combat tools and upgrades support a more aggressive approach Scarcity is a major source of Requiem’s horror pressure
Perspective First-person and third-person options Released as a third-person remake Requiem lets players choose how they experience its spaces; that choice does not guarantee less fear
Structure Exploration, backtracking, combat, puzzles and limited-item management Known for a stronger action-combat identity than the survival-horror model described for Requiem Requiem’s structure is closer in concept to Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil 2 remake

Why Grace’s chapters are likely to feel more frightening

A protagonist without established combat confidence

Grace is new to confronting zombies. The director’s description frames her as someone who survives by assessing danger, using items carefully and finding a way through hostile spaces rather than simply overpowering what is in front of her. That changes the emotional question during an encounter. Instead of asking which weapon is most efficient, the player is more often weighing whether an encounter should be fought, avoided or delayed until a better route is available.

This is a design description, not a promise that every player will be frightened by every Grace sequence. Experienced players may find familiar systems manageable, while newcomers may feel the resource pressure immediately. The relevant point is that Requiem gives Grace fewer assumptions of control, which creates the conditions for suspense that the more combat-capable Leon sections intentionally relieve.

Scarce ammunition turns ordinary rooms into decisions

Nakanishi said Grace is often short on ammunition. A shortage does more than make shooting less convenient: it changes how the player reads a room. An enemy may be a threat, a distraction, a permanent obstacle or something that can be bypassed. Spending rounds to create a safe path can leave fewer options for the next encounter, so the fear comes from the consequences of a decision as much as from the creature on screen.

That pressure should not be translated into a claim that Grace’s chapters are objectively harder. Difficulty depends on player experience, chosen perspective, encounter knowledge and how the game distributes items. The supported comparison is narrower: Requiem uses limited ammunition and item management to make Grace’s vulnerability part of its horror design, whereas Leon’s equipment is intended to support more confident combat.

How Leon changes the emotional rhythm

More tools, more agency

Leon has weapon enhancements and modifications. Those systems give his sections a different texture from Grace’s survival-focused play. A player can approach danger with a plan built around firepower, upgrades and tactical control rather than relying primarily on concealment or conservation.

That does not make Leon’s chapters consequence-free. The director specifically said they still contain danger and are not simply power fantasies. Enemies, positioning and resource choices continue to matter; the difference is that Leon is equipped to answer threats more directly. In pacing terms, his capability supplies relief after a vulnerable Grace sequence while preserving enough risk to keep the campaign from splitting into a horror game followed by a consequence-free shooter.

Relief is part of the horror design

Requiem’s alternating protagonists are not merely two unrelated campaigns placed side by side. The contrast is intended to control intensity. A tense exploration section can be followed by a more assertive combat passage, then return to uncertainty later. This ebb and flow is why calling Requiem “constantly terrifying” would misrepresent the director’s explanation. Its fear is expected to work through contrast: danger feels sharper when the player has recently had greater control, and a temporary sense of power can make the next loss of control more noticeable.

Shared locations make the two play styles interact

Actions taken in shared locations carry between Grace and Leon. Enemies killed by Grace remain reflected when playing as Leon, and items collected by one character remain part of the state seen by the other. Nakanishi said this interwoven design supports strategic choices and replay value.

For the horror comparison, the important consequence is continuity. Grace’s decisions are not isolated challenges that disappear when the game changes protagonists. Choosing to spend ammunition, clear a route or collect an item can affect the conditions in which Leon later moves through the same place. Conversely, Leon’s combat-focused sections are connected to spaces that may previously have been experienced through Grace’s more vulnerable perspective. The shared state gives the campaign a cause-and-effect relationship instead of treating each character as a separate mode.

First-person or third-person: does perspective change the fear?

Requiem supports both first-person and third-person perspectives. Nakanishi said third-person support was added after the team observed that some players struggled with first-person play. That makes the option a matter of access and player preference, not a guaranteed difficulty or fear setting.

What first-person can emphasize

First-person presentation can make a confined space feel immediate because the player’s view is tied closely to the character’s position. It may heighten uncertainty about what is outside the field of view, especially during exploration. Those effects are possibilities of the perspective, not a measured claim that first-person is scarier for everyone.

What third-person can change

Third-person gives a wider view of the character and surroundings and can help players who find first-person navigation uncomfortable. It may make spatial awareness easier, but easier orientation is not the same as reduced horror. A wider view can reveal threats, show the character’s vulnerability in a room or make an approaching enemy more legible. Requiem’s design goal is to let more players engage with its systems, not to assign one perspective as the objectively frightening choice.

Where Requiem sits among other Resident Evil structures

Nakanishi compared Requiem’s structure more closely with Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil 2 remake than with Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Village. In practical terms, that means the design emphasizes a loop of exploring spaces, returning to previously seen areas, solving puzzles, deciding when to fight and managing a limited inventory of useful items.

This comparison describes the type of structure, not a claim that Requiem duplicates either earlier game. Backtracking can make a location feel familiar while still changing its risk profile: a route that was safe before may become dangerous after an event, and an item collected on an earlier pass may alter which options are available later. Puzzle-solving also contributes to the horror rhythm by placing the player in a problem-solving mode before returning them to a threat.

The Resident Evil 4 remake remains a useful contrast because its identity is more strongly associated with action and combat. Requiem can still contain firefights and empowered Leon sequences while organizing the campaign around a broader survival-horror cycle. The distinction is emphasis and pacing, not the presence or absence of weapons.

What the evidence does not establish

  • There is no controlled, numerical test showing that Requiem is a certain percentage scarier than the Resident Evil 4 remake.
  • There is no representative player survey establishing a universal ranking of fear between the two games.
  • Nakanishi’s statement that Requiem may be scarier than Resident Evil Village should not be presented as a direct comparison with the Resident Evil 4 remake.
  • Scarce ammunition in Grace’s chapters does not prove that those chapters are objectively more difficult for every player.
  • Third-person mode is not guaranteed to make Requiem less frightening; it was included in part to help players who struggled with first-person play.

The defensible conclusion is about intended experience. Capcom is positioning Requiem as the more horror-focused design, with vulnerability and resource management given greater weight than in the action-led Resident Evil 4 remake. Individual reactions will still vary with familiarity, tolerance for first-person play, preferred combat style and the choices made during exploration.

Which game fits which kind of horror player?

Choose Requiem if you want vulnerability to drive the tension

  • You prefer exploration, backtracking and puzzles alongside combat.
  • You enjoy deciding whether ammunition is worth spending on the threat in front of you.
  • You want two protagonists whose capabilities create deliberate changes in pace.
  • You value first-person and third-person options rather than a single viewpoint.

Choose the RE4 remake if you want action to carry more of the experience

  • You prefer a combat-forward rhythm and a protagonist built around direct engagement.
  • You want upgrades and weapon handling to be central ways of answering danger.
  • You are looking for the 2023 remake’s interpretation of the 2005 action-horror formula.

These are design-fit guidelines, not a claim that one game is universally better or scarier. Requiem’s purpose is to make fear depend more heavily on vulnerability and scarcity, then use Leon’s capability to create relief. The remake of Resident Evil 4 puts more of its identity in action momentum. Players deciding between them should therefore choose the rhythm they want to inhabit, not rely on an unsupported numeric fear ranking.
