The Switch 2 versions of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 are reported to target 60 frames per second in both handheld and docked modes. Resident Evil 4 also targets 60fps, but its heavier rendering load exposes more compromises and makes its locked 40fps option worth considering. PS5 Pro has the stronger GPU, advanced ray tracing and Sony’s PSSR reconstruction, although no complete, independently measured resolution table exists for every remake on both systems.
Switch 2 or PS5 Pro: which version should you buy?
The answer depends more on where you play than on the game you choose. Switch 2 is the portability-first system: it runs the remakes in handheld mode and can return to the same game on a television through its dock. PS5 Pro is the large-screen fidelity choice, with substantially more graphics headroom for high-quality image reconstruction, ray-traced effects and demanding scenes.

| Priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Playing in bed, while travelling or away from a television | Switch 2 | It supports a full handheld mode as well as docked play. |
| Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 3 at a smooth 60fps target | Switch 2 is viable | TechRadar reported consistent or barely noticeable performance drops in both modes for these games. |
| Best image quality on a large 4K television | PS5 Pro | Its upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing and PSSR provide more rendering and reconstruction headroom. |
| Resident Evil 4 with the fewest visual compromises | PS5 Pro | RE4 is the most demanding Switch 2 conversion in the cited coverage. |
| One console for portable and television play | Switch 2 | The same version works in both play locations. |
There is no evidence that every remake on Switch 2 renders at a single fixed resolution, and an advertised output such as 4K should not be treated as native internal rendering. The only specific internal-resolution figures in the cited coverage apply to Resident Evil 4: 360p in handheld mode and 540p when docked, followed by upscaling.
How the three remakes behave on Switch 2
Resident Evil 2 Remake
TechRadar’s Switch 2 review says the game targets 60fps and that frame rates were “delightfully consistent,” including during higher-intensity action. That makes RE2 the safest first purchase if you want a technically dependable portable Resident Evil experience.

The important distinction is consistency rather than a guarantee that every frame is identical in every scene. The review describes smooth play in demanding moments, while noting that PS5 Pro or PC remains preferable for a more premium visual presentation. On Switch 2, the benefit is that the same performance target carries between handheld and docked play instead of requiring a separate performance mode for each location.
Resident Evil 3 Remake
TechRadar reports that RE3 targets 60fps and remained smooth in both docked and handheld modes, with barely noticeable drops. The review also found that HDR calibration helps the graphics translate well on compatible displays.
RE3 is a shorter, more action-focused campaign than RE2, so it suits buyers who want quick set pieces and a portable conversion that does not show the same stress as RE4. PS5 Pro still has the higher image-quality ceiling, but the Switch 2 version is not presented as a compromised frame-rate experience in the cited testing.

Resident Evil 4 Remake
RE4 is the Switch 2 stress test. The conversion aims for 60fps, but the heavier environments, effects and combat scenes place more pressure on the hardware. A Nintendo Life summary of Digital Foundry’s October 2026 analysis identifies a locked 40fps mode as a potentially more consistent alternative when the 60fps target cannot hold as steadily as you would like.

That 40fps option is not automatically “better.” At 60fps, controls and camera movement feel more immediate when the game can stay near its target. At 40fps, frame pacing can be more even, which may look steadier in difficult scenes, but motion is less responsive than at 60fps. Your display also needs to refresh at a compatible rate for a 40fps presentation to be shown cleanly.
Respec reports an internal rendering resolution of 360p in handheld mode and 540p in docked mode for RE4, with the final image reconstructed or upscaled. These numbers describe RE4 specifically; they must not be applied to RE2 or RE3. Fine detail such as hair, foliage and moving geometry is where the lower internal budget is most apparent, particularly on a large television viewed at close range.
Resolution: what the numbers actually mean
Internal resolution is the image size the game renders before reconstruction or scaling. Output resolution is what the console sends to the display. A game can output a 4K signal while rendering internally at a much lower resolution, so the two figures are not interchangeable.

| Game and mode | Internal-resolution evidence | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 2, Switch 2 | Not stated in the cited coverage | 60fps target with smooth reported play; no verified internal-resolution figure. |
| Resident Evil 3, Switch 2 | Not stated in the cited coverage | 60fps target with smooth reported play; no verified internal-resolution figure. |
| Resident Evil 4, Switch 2 handheld | 360p (Respec, 2026) | Internal render before upscaling, not the display’s output resolution. |
| Resident Evil 4, Switch 2 docked | 540p (Respec, 2026) | Internal render before upscaling, not a claim of native 540p output. |
| All three remakes, PS5 Pro | Not stated in the cited coverage | Greater image-quality and performance headroom is reported, but no complete per-game internal-resolution table is established. |
The lower RE4 internal resolutions are a trade-off. Rendering fewer pixels leaves more time for game logic, effects and frame delivery, while reconstruction attempts to restore detail. Reconstruction can look convincing in static areas, but motion, thin geometry and foliage are more likely to reveal softness or shimmering. This is why PS5 Pro’s extra GPU capacity matters even when both consoles send a high-resolution signal to the same television.

Frame-rate targets and perceived smoothness
A target is not the same as a locked result. It describes the performance level the developer is aiming for, while actual frame delivery can vary with scene complexity. The available Switch 2 reviews provide a clear picture for RE2 and RE3 but a more qualified one for RE4.
| Game | Switch 2 target or mode | Reported behavior | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 2 | 60fps target | TechRadar reported delightfully consistent frame rates, including action-heavy sections. | Best low-risk Switch 2 entry for performance-conscious buyers. |
| Resident Evil 3 | 60fps target | TechRadar reported smooth docked and handheld play with barely noticeable drops. | Strong portable choice for an action-oriented campaign. |
| Resident Evil 4 | 60fps target; locked 40fps alternative discussed | More demanding conversion; Digital Foundry’s analysis, summarized by Nintendo Life, identified 40fps as a potentially steadier option. | Buy on Switch 2 for portability, but choose PS5 Pro for the least compromised presentation. |
Neither the cited reviews nor an official Capcom performance table establishes a universal “locked 60fps” claim for all three games on Switch 2. Treat RE2 and RE3 as reported smooth 60fps-target experiences and RE4 as the title that requires the most attention to mode selection.
Ray tracing and PS5 Pro image quality
Sony’s official PS5 Pro materials describe an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K resolution using PSSR. Ray tracing calculates lighting, reflections or shadows with more physically based behavior than traditional raster techniques, but it also increases GPU workload. The PS5 Pro’s additional capacity gives developers more room to use those effects without sacrificing frame rate as readily.

On Switch 2, the RE4 measurements show how a portable power budget changes the balance: a lower internal resolution and reconstruction preserve playability but reduce fine detail. The difference is easiest to see on a large screen, in hair and foliage, and while the camera or characters are moving. On the Switch 2’s smaller handheld display, those compromises are less conspicuous and the ability to play anywhere can outweigh them.
Display choice changes the comparison
When PS5 Pro’s advantages are easiest to see
- A large 4K television makes softness, reconstruction artifacts and missing fine detail more visible.
- A 120Hz display can present high-frame-rate output cleanly and gives a 40fps mode a useful refresh-rate relationship.
- Variable refresh rate can reduce the visibility of uneven frame delivery when a game moves below its target, provided the television and console are configured for it.
When Switch 2’s compromises matter less
- Handheld play puts the image on a smaller screen, where lower internal resolution is harder to inspect pixel by pixel.
- Players who value uninterrupted portable sessions may prefer a slightly softer image over being tied to a television.
- RE2 and RE3 are reported to maintain smooth play in both modes, so the portability trade-off is primarily visual rather than a major frame-rate sacrifice.
Recommended settings and buying checks
If you buy RE2 or RE3 for Switch 2
- Use the latest system and game updates available for your region.
- Calibrate HDR on the television or handheld-compatible display rather than relying on a generic preset; TechRadar specifically noted HDR calibration as helpful for RE3.
- Test both handheld and docked modes in an action sequence. The cited reviews report smooth performance in each, but your display settings can change how motion and contrast appear.
- Keep expectations focused on the 60fps target and portable convenience, not on matching PS5 Pro’s highest-fidelity image.
If you buy RE4 for Switch 2
- Start with the 60fps-target mode if responsive controls are your priority.
- If you notice uneven delivery in demanding scenes, try the locked 40fps mode discussed in the Digital Foundry analysis summarized by Nintendo Life.
- Evaluate the game in the mode you will actually use. The cited 360p internal figure applies to handheld play and 540p to docked play, so the television presentation will not look identical to the handheld image.
- Judge detail at your normal viewing distance. Reconstruction artifacts that are obvious on a large television may be far less distracting in handheld mode.
If you buy the PS5 Pro version
- Use a 4K display if you want the console’s image-quality improvements to be apparent.
- Enable the television’s 120Hz and variable-refresh features when supported, then verify that the console detects them correctly.
- Choose the in-game mode that balances ray-traced effects and frame rate for your preference; the available evidence supports greater headroom but does not specify one universal setting for all three remakes.
- Do not interpret a 4K output indicator as proof of native 4K internal rendering.
Common misconceptions
“Switch 2 runs every remake at native 1080p or 4K.”
Not established. Exact internal-resolution figures are unavailable for RE2 and RE3 in the cited coverage, and RE4 is reported to render internally at 360p handheld and 540p docked before upscaling.
“A 60fps target means RE4 is locked at 60fps.”
Not established. RE4 targets 60fps, but the cited analysis treats a locked 40fps mode as a potentially more consistent alternative.
“PS5 Pro automatically renders every remake at native 4K with ray tracing.”
Not established. Sony documents the console’s upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing and PSSR, while the comparison evidence describes greater headroom. It does not publish a complete native-resolution and ray-tracing-settings table for these remakes.

“The Switch 2 version is inferior in every practical way.”
That overlooks portability. RE2 and RE3 are reported to play smoothly at a 60fps target in both modes, and RE4 remains playable with a choice between a 60fps target and a potentially steadier 40fps mode. The visual gap matters most on a large screen.
Game-by-game buying recommendation
Pick Resident Evil 2 on Switch 2 when you want the safest portable purchase
RE2 combines the strongest reported performance result with the series’ most natural fit for repeated handheld sessions. It is the recommendation for buyers who want one Switch 2 remake and do not want to start with the technically hardest conversion.
Pick Resident Evil 3 on Switch 2 when you want shorter, more action-focused play
RE3 offers the same reported 60fps target and smooth docked-and-handheld behavior, with HDR calibration helping presentation. Its shorter, faster campaign makes it a good choice for portable bursts.
Pick Resident Evil 4 on PS5 Pro when visual quality is your priority
RE4 is the clearest showcase for PS5 Pro’s extra rendering capacity. Its larger environments and heavier effects make the Switch 2’s reconstruction and internal-resolution compromises easier to notice, especially on a large television.
Pick Resident Evil 4 on Switch 2 when portability outweighs image quality
The Switch 2 version is still the right answer if playing the full remake away from a television is the feature you value most. Use the 60fps target for responsiveness or investigate the locked 40fps option if consistency is more important.
What the evidence does and does not prove
The strongest published performance observations are the TechRadar reports for RE2 and RE3, the Nintendo Life summary of Digital Foundry’s October 2026 RE4 analysis, Respec’s RE4 internal-resolution figures, and Sony’s official description of PS5 Pro hardware and PSSR. No independent benchmark dataset or official Capcom resolution table covering all three remakes on both platforms is established in those materials.
That limitation matters when comparing screenshots, television output labels or internet claims that quote one resolution for an entire trilogy. The defensible conclusion is comparative: Switch 2 prioritizes portable play and delivers reported smooth 60fps-target performance in RE2 and RE3, while PS5 Pro provides the strongest large-screen image-quality and performance headroom. RE4 is the exception that exposes the trade-off most clearly.
