The 50% figure measures daily active users (DAU) across five Resident Evil games. It is not a 50% rise in sales, and nobody has shown that the film alone caused it. Sensor Tower data, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz, shows DAU climbing around the film’s September 18, 2026 opening. Separate Alinea Analytics estimates show game discounts started before the film and drove much of the sales movement. The analyst takeaway is that a film’s lasting value to a game franchise is more likely visibility than a short sales bump.
What the 50% figure actually measures
GamesIndustry.biz, in a report reproduced by GameDev.net, attributed the increase to Sensor Tower. Across five Resident Evil titles, DAU rose from 500,000 on August 30 to 750,000 by September 20, 2026. That is a 50% rise in people playing on a given day, over roughly three weeks.

These are analytics-firm estimates as relayed by the press. We haven’t seen the underlying datasets or methodology, so treat them as reported figures, not audited facts. The same report also cited Newzoo for an average 72% uplift against late-summer baselines across 37 markets. The reproduction doesn’t make clear which metric that covers, so don’t compare it directly with the Sensor Tower number.
Why it doesn’t prove the film caused a sales jump
The same report said daily unit sales rose from 34,000 to nearly 80,000. That looks like a film effect, but the timing is tangled. Alinea Analytics estimates, reported by theGeek.games, say price cuts began on September 10, eight days before the film opened. Alinea attributes much of the sales movement to those discounts.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
So the window combines at least two causes: a major film release and cheaper games. Discount timing and platform differences make clean attribution difficult.
Game-by-game numbers
Alinea Analytics’ DAU estimates for individual games, as reported by theGeek.games, show the lift varied a lot. The text also reports that the Resident Evil 2 remake figure covers the week after release.

- FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
- A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
| Game | DAU before | DAU after | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 2 (remake) | 78,000 | 116,000 | +48% |
| Resident Evil 3 (remake) | 28,000 | 35,000 | +25% |
| Resident Evil 4 (remake) | 199,000 | 247,000 | +24% |
| Resident Evil: Requiem | 118,000 | 143,000 | +20% |
The Resident Evil 2 remake gained the most. TheGeek.games connected that to its Raccoon City setting, which matches the film’s setting. Resident Evil 4 has the largest player base here, but it grew proportionally less. The newest game, Requiem, grew least.

PS5 and Steam responded differently
After factoring out discount effects, Alinea estimated an additional film-period sales lift of 50–65% on PS5 for the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes. On Steam the estimate was 11–14%. These are Alinea’s estimates as reported by theGeek.games. Platform audiences and pricing differ, so don’t read the gap as a general rule about film audiences.

Why analysts focus on brand building
Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis is quoted in the reproduced GamesIndustry.biz report: “The benefit … isn’t the short-term increase in game sales. It’s IP and brand building.” The ellipsis appears in the reproduction, so check the original article before quoting it as one continuous sentence.
This is analyst interpretation, not something the cited short window measured. A few weeks of data can show attention and players returning to older games. It can’t show whether the film builds the franchise over years. The reader question posed alongside the report is a fair one: do transmedia campaigns drive meaningful catalog sales, or mostly short-lived spikes? These figures don’t settle it.

If the film made you want to play
The reporting names the Resident Evil 2 remake as the clearest setting match to the film. When choosing, compare:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Setting and story connection: Resident Evil 2 remake for Raccoon City.
- Older entry or newest release: Requiem is the newest game; the remakes are older and were discounted around the film’s release.
- Platform: PS5 and Steam showed different responses, and prices vary by store.
- Current price: the reporting doesn’t establish present prices or availability, so check your store listing.
The Bottom Line
Read “50%” as more people playing, not more copies sold. The discounts muddy any claim about the film’s sales impact, and the brand-building case is a reasonable analyst view that this data window can’t prove.
