Start with Resident Evil 2 (2019) if you want the best all-round introduction to modern Resident Evil. It teaches exploration, puzzle solving, resource management and survival-horror pacing without requiring extensive series knowledge. Capcom’s own starter guide calls it “a great jumping-on point for the series.”

Choose Resident Evil 7 biohazard for the most intense first-person fear, Resident Evil 4 (2023) for action-horror, and Resident Evil Village when you want the direct continuation of RE7’s first-person story. Resident Evil 3 (2020) is best treated as a shorter, more linear companion to RE2 rather than the essential first purchase.

Quick buying recommendations

Game Best for What it emphasizes Edition advice
Resident Evil 2 (2019) Most new players Exploration, puzzles, limited resources and traditional survival-horror tension Standard edition is enough for the campaign; a deluxe version is mainly for cosmetic extras
Resident Evil 7 biohazard The scariest first-person experience Claustrophobic exploration, vulnerability and a direct first-person viewpoint Buy the edition that includes the available story additions in your region if you want the fullest package
Resident Evil Village Continuing the RE7 storyline First-person horror with a broader, more action-oriented adventure Gold Edition is the clearest upgrade because it adds story content and a third-person mode
Resident Evil 4 (2023) Action-horror and replayable combat More weapons, enemy encounters and forward momentum than the classic survival-horror entries Search for Gold Edition when you want the complete modern package, then verify the platform listing
Resident Evil 3 (2020) A shorter follow-up to RE2 A more linear Raccoon City campaign with less emphasis on broad exploration Standard edition makes the most sense unless a deluxe bundle is heavily discounted

These recommendations describe the games’ roles, not a permanent ranking. Your preferred camera, tolerance for fear, platform and interest in extra story content should determine the final purchase.

Which Resident Evil game should I buy first?

Resident Evil 2 (2019): the safest starting point

The 2019 remake is the strongest default recommendation because it demonstrates the series’ central loop in a modern form. You explore a dangerous environment, decide which items are worth carrying, solve environmental puzzles and choose when to fight or avoid enemies. Ammunition and healing resources are valuable enough that careless shooting can create problems later, while the police-station setting gives the campaign a clear geographic identity.

Capcom Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition PlayStation 5 Game
  • Intense horror experience with dark narrative
  • Improved images and refined game mechanics included
  • Players take on the role of Leon S Kennedy
  • Mission to save the president's daughter from danger
  • Challenging environments and strategic combat scenarios await

You do not need to know the 1998 original or earlier story details to follow the remake. Familiar characters and references reward longtime fans, but the campaign explains its immediate situation on its own. Capcom’s official starter advice specifically points new players toward this game as a jumping-on point.

Choose Resident Evil 7 first if fear matters more than familiarity

Resident Evil 7 biohazard changes to a first-person camera and puts sustained psychological pressure ahead of the series’ larger-scale action. Capcom staff describe it as the scariest entry. The viewpoint makes narrow rooms, sudden sounds and limited visibility more personal, so it is a better first purchase for someone who wants to “lose sleep” rather than learn the series through a broad third-person adventure.

RE7 also establishes the storyline that continues in Resident Evil Village. Starting with Village is possible, but playing RE7 first provides the character and plot context that makes the sequel’s events more meaningful.

Buy Resident Evil 4 (2023) first when you want action

The 2023 remake is a reimagining of the acclaimed 2005 game. It retains the original’s appeal while modernizing presentation, controls and encounter design. Combat, weapon upgrades and set-piece momentum are more prominent than in RE2, so it is a better fit for players who find slow resource management frustrating or who want a polished action-horror campaign.

RE4 can serve as an entry point because its central mission is understandable without playing every earlier title. It is less representative of pure survival horror than RE2 or RE7, however. If your priority is learning why the series is associated with careful exploration and scarcity, begin elsewhere.

How the main modern games differ

Horror intensity and camera perspective

  • RE7: first-person and the most overtly frightening recommendation from Capcom’s staff guide.
  • Village: first-person like RE7, but its journey covers a wider range of locations and moods.
  • RE2: third-person survival horror with deliberate exploration and pursuit pressure.
  • RE3: third-person and more linear, making it easier to move through but less exploratory.
  • RE4: third-person action-horror, with combat taking a larger share of your attention.

Resource management versus combat

RE2 asks you to make the most conservative decisions. Inventory space, ammunition and healing items influence whether you can safely revisit an area. RE7 creates a similar feeling of vulnerability through its first-person presentation and confined spaces. Village and RE4 provide more opportunities to fight, upgrade equipment and maintain momentum. RE3 sits between the two approaches but pushes you through a more directed route.

None of these balances is objectively superior. A player who enjoys planning and backtracking should start with RE2. Someone who wants frequent encounters and weapon progression will probably be happier with RE4. A player who wants tension generated by what cannot be seen should choose RE7.

Remake fidelity and modernization

RE2 and RE3 rebuild the Raccoon City stories for modern hardware and controls. RE4 is explicitly described by Capcom as a remake of the 2005 original, preserving its core appeal while reworking the experience. The result is not a museum-style reproduction: familiar scenes and characters are presented through contemporary pacing and systems.

If you want to compare a remake with its source, play the original only after the modern version if you are concerned about spoilers or want to see the design differences. The modern games stand on their own, so older versions are optional rather than prerequisites.

Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Should I play RE2 remake or RE4 remake?

Question Choose RE2 (2019) Choose RE4 (2023)
Preferred mood Oppressive, exploratory survival horror Fast-moving action-horror
Combat expectation Fight selectively and conserve supplies Fight frequently and improve your arsenal
Structure More emphasis on navigation, rooms and revisiting areas More forward momentum and set-piece progression
Series introduction Best general starting point Best starting point for action-oriented players
Modern remake context Rebuilds the 1998 Raccoon City story Reimagines the 2005 adventure

Choose RE2 when the phrase “survival horror” appeals to you more than “action game.” Choose RE4 when you want a confident third-person shooter with horror elements and do not want every encounter to be a resource puzzle. Buying both is sensible if you enjoy the series’ two major modern styles, but neither is required to understand the other’s basic story.

Is Resident Evil 3 worth buying?

RE3 is worth buying when you specifically want another Raccoon City story after RE2, prefer a shorter and more linear route, or find it at a substantial discount. It shares the modern remake setting and presentation with RE2 but does not offer the same breadth of exploration. Treat it as a focused follow-up rather than the one game that represents everything Resident Evil can be.

The best sequence for the Raccoon City remakes is RE2 followed by RE3. That order preserves the setting’s continuity and lets you recognize locations, events and supporting characters without requiring any older game.

What comes in Resident Evil Village Gold Edition?

Capcom states that Resident Evil Village Gold Edition adds new story content and a third-person mode. Those are functional additions, not merely cosmetic items: the extra story expands the Village package, while the camera option changes how you experience the main game. If you have not bought Village yet and want both the main campaign and its documented additions, Gold Edition is the straightforward choice.

If you already own the base game, compare the price of the relevant upgrade or expansion listing with the complete Gold package for your platform. Store naming and entitlements can differ, so read the exact contents shown for your account’s region before paying twice for the same campaign.

Are the Resident Evil Gold and Deluxe Editions worth it?

When a standard edition is the better value

  • You want only the primary campaign.
  • The premium package adds costumes, weapons or other items you do not expect to use.
  • A sale makes the standard edition substantially cheaper and you can add story content later, where a separate upgrade is offered.
  • You are buying on a platform whose store lists different bundles from another platform.

When Gold Edition earns its premium

Gold is most defensible when it includes story content or a meaningful mode. Village meets that test because Capcom documents both new story content and third-person mode. For RE4, “Gold Edition” is the useful search term for the complete modern package, but the precise contents must be checked in the retailer’s listing for your platform. Do not assume that a Gold label has identical add-ons across console, PC and Apple versions.

How to approach Deluxe Edition

Deluxe usually signals extra items rather than a different campaign. The value therefore depends on whether you care about cosmetics, alternate equipment or collector-oriented bonuses. For the announced Nintendo Switch 2 release of Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, verify the regional digital-store description before purchase; the announcement establishes the edition, but the included extras should be confirmed in the listing you will actually use.

Platforms and release details

Capcom’s product information lists RE7, RE2, RE3 and Village for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC, along with additional cloud and mobile availability. The exact release date and feature set can vary by platform. The same table lists RE4 (2023) for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Apple devices.

Nintendo Switch entries in Capcom’s table are cloud versions, not automatically native downloads. Cloud play depends on network conditions and service availability, so check the platform label before assuming that a cartridge or offline installation is included.

Nintendo Switch 2 timing

Capcom announced Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition for Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement gives a digital release date of October 16, 2026 and a physical release date of January 29, 2027. Those dates apply to the announced Switch 2 releases; regional store timing and package contents should still be checked before ordering.

Which Resident Evil games work in VR?

Capcom’s official guide identifies VR versions for Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7 biohazard and Resident Evil Village. VR support is not a universal guarantee across every platform or headset. Confirm the exact store page, headset requirement and edition before buying, especially when a listing separates a standard game from a VR-specific mode or release.

For maximum fear, RE7’s first-person design is the obvious VR-oriented choice. Village also uses first person but has a broader adventure structure. RE4’s VR availability gives an action-focused alternative, although its emphasis is combat rather than slow-burn vulnerability.

What the sales figures tell you—and what they do not

Publisher-reported sales show that these are established releases rather than niche experiments. Capcom reported more than 15 million units each for RE7 and RE2 as of December 31, 2024; more than 11 million for Village and more than 10 million for RE3 at the same cutoff. Capcom also reported more than 10 million RE4 (2023) units in approximately two years after its release in a 2025 update.

The series as a whole had surpassed 170 million units according to Capcom’s Integrated Report 2025, measured as of March 31, 2025. A 2026 Capcom announcement reported cumulative series game sales above 213 million units as of June 30, 2026. These totals indicate broad adoption, but they do not predict your personal enjoyment, current price or the quality of a particular port.

A practical buying decision tree

  1. Pick your camera. Select RE7 or Village for first person; select RE2, RE3 or RE4 for third person.
  2. Pick your balance. Choose RE2 or RE7 for stronger survival-horror pressure; choose RE4 or Village for more action; choose RE3 for a more directed Raccoon City route.
  3. Decide whether story additions matter. For Village, Gold includes documented new story content and third-person mode. For RE4, inspect the Gold listing. For RE2 Deluxe on Switch 2, inspect regional extras.
  4. Check your platform’s exact version. Confirm native, cloud or VR labeling, supported hardware and whether the bundle includes the content you expect.
  5. Buy the standard edition when the campaign is your only goal. Premium labels are not automatically better; they are worthwhile only when their particular extras match your plans.

Common purchase mistakes

  • Assuming every Gold Edition is equivalent: bundle contents vary by game and platform.
  • Buying RE3 as your only introduction: its shorter, linear design does not showcase the full range of modern Resident Evil.
  • Starting with Village without RE7: the game is playable, but RE7 supplies the preceding first-person story context.
  • Confusing cloud and native releases: a Switch cloud listing requires a compatible connection and is not the same as an installed version.
  • Relying on an old price claim: discounts, stock and regional pricing change constantly; check the live store page at purchase time.
  • Assuming VR works on every headset: confirm the named hardware and edition before checkout.

Recommended play routes

One-game introduction

Play RE2 (2019). It is the clearest single demonstration of exploration, scarcity and modern survival-horror design.

First-person route

Play RE7 biohazard, then Village. This preserves the direct story progression and lets you experience the two first-person entries in sequence.

Raccoon City route

Play RE2, then RE3. The order follows the modern remake setting and makes RE3’s role as a follow-up clearer.

Action-horror route

Play RE4 (2023), then return to RE2 or RE7 if you want a more resource-conscious and frightening interpretation of the series.

Broad modern sampler

Play RE2, RE7, Village and RE4, adding RE3 when you want the shorter Raccoon City companion. This route covers the principal modern perspectives without requiring older releases first.
