Resident Evil 5 Should Never Be Remade, but Resident Evil 6 Is Fair Game

It sounds backwards: why protect the older Resident Evil 5 from a remake while welcoming one for Resident Evil 6? Because the fifth game has a more focused identity built around Chris and Sheva playing together. The sixth is a broader, more uneven collection of campaigns and multiplayer ideas—material that, in my view, could benefit from being reorganized rather than reproduced.

This is an argument about what each game is, not a claim about Capcom’s plans. Capcom’s documented re-releases of both titles were HD releases or console editions, not remakes; the sources cited here do not confirm a remake of either game.

What a remake would put at risk in Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 5 is not simply an older action-horror game waiting for a visual upgrade. Its central arrangement is a partnership: Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar face the campaign together. Capcom’s Xbox 360 manual documents cooperative play both locally in split-screen and online. That makes co-op part of the game’s defining structure, not a feature tucked away from the main experience. Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 manual

Capcom’s own series retrospective notes that online co-op was first added to Resident Evil 5, before appearing in Resident Evil 6 and other entries. Capcom’s co-op retrospective That history matters: the game is remembered not only as a sequence of encounters, but as one players can share. Changing its combat, partner behavior, resource handling, or pacing could change the feel of that shared play.

  • Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
  • For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
  • An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
  • Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.

That does not mean every element must remain untouched. A remake could improve controls, presentation, or accessibility while keeping the partnership intact. But if a remake replaced the two-character rhythm with a fundamentally different solo horror design, it would risk making a different game under the same title. My preference is for a careful restoration, if anything, rather than a wholesale reimagining.

Why Resident Evil 6 leaves more room for redesign

Resident Evil 6 has a wider multiplayer shape. Its manual describes co-op within campaigns, story intersections that can bring up to four players together, and Agent Hunt, which lets a player enter another campaign as an enemy. • FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
  • DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
  • A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
  • NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

That variety is an ambitious idea, but it can also make the game feel diffuse. Rather than protecting one tightly defined cooperative identity, a remake could decide what should bind the different campaigns together: a clearer progression, more consistent pacing, or a stronger horror atmosphere. Those are possibilities I would want a remake to explore, not announced Capcom plans.

The distinction is not that co-op matters in one game and not the other. It is that Resident Evil 5’s two-person partnership is its organizing principle, while Resident Evil 6’s documented modes point to a larger range of structures. The sixth game therefore seems more open to being simplified or reshaped without discarding a single defining format.

Remake, HD release, and port are not the same thing

Capcom announced an HD release of Resident Evil 5 for PS4 and Xbox One in 2016, naming the combined Mercenaries United mode. Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 HD release announcement Capcom also announced Resident Evil 6 for those consoles with previously released console multiplayer and Mercenaries content. Capcom reported 5.8 million global shipments for Resident Evil 5 in a January 2012 corporate announcement; that release also said the game went on sale in March 2009. The dividing line is identity, not age

A remake should earn the right to alter what players remember. For Resident Evil 5, the strongest case for restraint is its Chris-and-Sheva co-op foundation: preserve the partnership and the experience that grows from it. For Resident Evil 6, the case for a more substantial rethink is its breadth: a remake could impose a clearer shape on its many campaigns and multiplayer ideas.

That is a subjective distinction, not a verdict on which original is better or a claim about what Capcom will do. It is simply why I would rather see the fifth game protected from reinvention and the sixth given room to find a more coherent form.
