PS5 is the best-looking version, Switch 2 is the most console-like handheld option with a 60-FPS target, and Steam Deck offers the most control over settings but is best treated as a 30-FPS machine in the tested profile.

Quick comparison

Platform Image quality and effects Frame-rate evidence Portability and flexibility
PS5 Highest-quality presentation of the three, with the strongest resolution, lighting, reflections, foliage and material detail. A controlled PS5 frame-rate measurement was not established for this comparison. TV-focused console with fixed console settings.
Switch 2 Approximately 520p internal resolution when docked and 360p in handheld mode. It removes screen-space reflections, reduces local-light shadows, uses more aggressive level-of-detail scaling, has sparser foliage and downgrades textures in some scenes. Targets 60 FPS, usually reaches it, but falls into the 50s in some areas and the 40s during dense combat. Cutscenes can use a variable frame rate. Native handheld and docked play, with console-style simplicity rather than extensive tuning.
Steam Deck The cited test used 1152×720 output, FSR 2 Quality, medium mesh and shadow settings, ambient occlusion and screen-space reflections. The tested configuration used a 30-FPS cap for a steadier result. Capcom’s 1080p/45-FPS and 1080p/60-FPS PC targets are guidance for suitable PCs, not a Steam Deck guarantee. Most configurable option, with PC controls, graphics tweaks, mods and access to a portable Steam library.

Why PS5 remains the graphics benchmark

Resident Evil 4 Remake runs on Capcom’s RE ENGINE. Capcom announced the remake for PlayStation 5 and PC in 2022, ahead of its March 24, 2023 release. In this comparison, PS5 is the visual baseline because the documented Switch 2 port makes several deliberate reductions rather than matching the larger console presentation.

Those reductions affect more than raw resolution. Switch 2 loses screen-space reflections, has less local-light shadowing, thinner vegetation, more aggressive level-of-detail changes and lower-quality textures in certain scenes. That makes PS5 the appropriate choice if sharp image quality, richer lighting and environmental detail matter more than portability.

Resolution and effects

Digital Foundry’s analysis, as summarized by Nintendo Everything in 2026, puts the Switch 2 version at approximately 520p internal resolution in docked mode and 360p internally in handheld mode. Those figures describe the game’s internal rendering resolution, not necessarily the output resolution reported by a television or the console display.

#1 Best Overall
Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

The port also omits screen-space reflections, reduces local-light shadow coverage, scales detail levels more aggressively, uses less foliage and lowers texture quality in some areas. The result is a softer and less materially rich image than PS5, especially on a large television.

How close is it to 60 FPS?

A separate report on Digital Foundry’s findings, summarized by Nintendo News Hub, says the port targets 60 FPS and commonly reaches that target. Performance drops into the 50s in some locations and into the 40s during demanding combat. Cutscenes can run at variable rates, so “60 FPS” should be read as a target with situational dips, not a locked result.

Rank #2
Resident Evil 2 - PlayStation 5
  • TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
  • RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
  • NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

This makes Switch 2 the better fit for someone who values playing the full console version in handheld mode and accepts lower resolution and reduced effects. It is not the right pick if a consistently high frame rate or maximum image clarity is your first priority.

Steam Deck: the most adjustable portable version

The tested 30-FPS profile

SteamDeckHQ’s April 6, 2023 test marked Resident Evil 4 as Deck Verified and used 1152×720 output, FSR 2 Quality, medium mesh and shadow settings, ambient occlusion, screen-space reflections and a 30-FPS cap. That is a specific tested configuration, not a claim that every Deck owner will get identical results after changing the settings.

The 30-FPS cap favors consistency over the higher frame-rate target advertised for more powerful PCs. It also preserves effects that the Switch 2 port removes, including screen-space reflections, while allowing the player to balance image quality, battery life and performance.

What Capcom’s PC guidance does—and does not—prove

Capcom’s official PC support information lists 1080p at 45 FPS for performance-oriented settings and 1080p at 60 FPS for quality-oriented settings on suitable PC hardware, with possible drops in demanding scenes. These are general PC targets. They should not be treated as a Steam Deck promise, because the Deck has lower-power hardware and a different performance envelope.

Which version fits each type of player?

Choose PS5 for maximum visual quality

  • Best choice for a television-first setup.
  • Prioritizes image clarity, lighting, reflections, foliage and material detail.
  • Do not infer a specific PS5 frame rate from this comparison; no same-scene measurement was established.

Choose Switch 2 for straightforward handheld play

  • Best choice when a native handheld version and a console-style experience matter most.
  • The 60-FPS target feels more responsive than a 30-FPS lock when conditions allow it.
  • Accept approximately 520p internal resolution docked, approximately 360p handheld, and performance dips in demanding scenes.

Choose Steam Deck for tuning and PC features

  • Best choice for adjustable graphics, PC input options, mods and an existing Steam library.
  • The cited profile supports a stable 30-FPS approach rather than promising 60 FPS.
  • Expect to spend time balancing resolution, upscaling, effects, frame caps and battery use.

Release timing and editions

Capcom announced the digital Switch 2 release for October 16, 2026. Capcom France lists boxed versions, including Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition, for January 29, 2027. Retailer availability, pricing and stock can differ by country, so the physical date should not be confused with the digital launch.

How firm is this comparison?

The available evidence does not provide one controlled, same-scene frame-time chart covering PS5, Switch 2 and Steam Deck. The Switch 2 resolution and performance figures come from Digital Foundry analysis as summarized by Nintendo Everything and Nintendo News Hub. The Deck figures come from SteamDeckHQ’s dated test, while Capcom’s 1080p targets describe suitable PC hardware generally. Use the comparison as a buying guide, not as a laboratory ranking of every scene or every Steam Deck configuration.
