Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is less a retelling of one game than a film built around the sensations of playing one: scanning rooms for supplies, moving cautiously, improving a weapon and facing obstacles through an over-the-shoulder viewpoint. GamesRadar calls it the best video game movie, but that is the reviewer’s verdict—not a consensus ranking. The film’s play-like craft is a persuasive strength; its lean plot and character development, and its departures from game lore, are meaningful trade-offs.
What is the 2026 Resident Evil movie about?
Directed by Zach Cregger, the 95-minute film follows Bryan, a medical courier carrying biological cargo toward Raccoon City General Hospital as the t-Virus outbreak begins. GamesRadar lists its release date as September 18, 2026. This is Cregger’s film, not the 2002 Resident Evil directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. GamesRadar’s review

Does it feel like playing a Resident Evil game?
More than most adaptations, it makes familiar gameplay patterns part of the film’s visual and dramatic language. GamesRadar highlights an over-the-shoulder perspective, searching for resources, firearm upgrades, careful movement and environmental obstacles. These choices give the viewer a sense of watching Bryan navigate danger one room and decision at a time, rather than simply seeing a succession of game-inspired images.

- All six Resident Evil movies, now together in one collection! Based on the popular video game series and starring Milla Jovovich, these sci-fi thrillers are must-watch genre classics!
Is it faithful to the games?
It is more interested in the feeling of play than in recreating a specific game’s plot. GamesRadar says the film takes place alongside the events of Resident Evil 2, while telling a separate story; it is not a direct adaptation of that game. The review also notes changes to aspects of the franchise’s virus and creature lore. Its priorities are atmosphere, movement and survival tension, not strict continuity. GamesRadar’s review
That distinction matters if “faithful” means recognizable characters and events: this film may not satisfy that expectation. If it means capturing the vulnerability, resource pressure and cautious exploration that define playing the games, its adaptation strategy is a closer fit.

- Witness the beginning of Evil.Raccoon City, which was once a booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, is now a dying Midwestern town. The company?s exodus left the city a wasteland?with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, a group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night.
What works, and what does not?
Gameplay becomes cinematic tension
The camera perspective and resource-gathering give suspense a practical shape: what is in the room, what can Bryan use, and how safely can he get through? Weapon progression and traversal challenges reinforce that sense of improvised survival. The film’s horror is not only about what might appear; it is also about whether Bryan is equipped to face it.

Horror and humor share the same viewpoint
The Associated Press describes humor as an important part of the horror and emphasizes Bryan’s ordinary, ill-equipped perspective. His line, “I only use guns in video games,” neatly captures the gap between game familiarity and real danger. The AP also says viewers do not need prior knowledge of the series to follow the outbreak story; longtime fans may spot Easter eggs. The Associated Press review

The trade-off is a sparse story
GamesRadar praises the film’s momentum, scares, creature effects and immersive feel, but finds its plot and character development very lean. That is a consequential limitation: Bryan’s predicament and the film’s survival mechanics are more developed than its people or story. The briskness suits a pressure-cooker horror ride, but viewers looking for substantial character arcs or a carefully layered franchise narrative may find less to hold on to.
Can you watch it without knowing the games?
Yes. The AP review says game knowledge is not required to understand the film. Newcomers can follow Bryan’s journey through the outbreak without decoding references, while fans have mechanics, lore connections and Easter eggs to notice. Prior familiarity adds recognition rather than supplying essential plot information. The Associated Press review

- When a fearless enemy out for revenge unleashes a brutal and deadly new virus, BSAA captain Chris Redfield enlists the help of Agent Leon S. Kennedy and Professor Rebecca Chambers to bring down the death merchant and save New York City.
Who is this Resident Evil movie for?
- Try it if you want brisk, gory survival horror, enjoy game-like exploration on screen, or are curious about an adaptation that translates mechanics rather than reenacting a plot.
- Adjust expectations if you want close fidelity to established lore, extensive character development or a definitive ranking of the franchise’s films.
- You do not need to play first. If you want to experience the survival-horror structure of the game whose events run alongside the movie, Resident Evil 2 is an optional companion—not a prerequisite or the film’s source plot. GamesRadar’s review
How to judge its place among Resident Evil adaptations
Adaptations can pursue different kinds of fidelity. A useful comparison asks whether a film preserves named characters and events, captures atmosphere and gameplay mechanics, uses cinema to create tension rather than merely borrow game imagery, and gives non-players enough character and story clarity. Cregger’s film makes a distinctive case on play-feel, but the available reviews do not establish a systematic ranking of the franchise’s movies.

For context, Paul W. S. Anderson described his 2002 film as an outbreak-origin prequel rather than a strict adaptation of one game. That is a different stated approach, not evidence that one film is objectively more faithful overall. IGN’s interview with Anderson
