Resident Evil 5 is the better choice for most couch co-op players. It has documented offline split-screen support, including a Windows update released on February 27, 2023. You can install it, connect two controllers, and play a supported local mode without turning the game into a modding project.
Resident Evil 2 (2019) is different. Capcom’s base game is listed as one-player, while local multiplayer comes from a community PC mod. The Windows update that removed an old dependency
For the Windows release, Capcom’s February 27, 2023 Steam announcement says the update removed Games for Windows Live support and added support for local split-screen co-op. That date and platform qualification should stay attached to the claim: it is not a promise that every edition has identical menus or controller behavior.
What “straightforward” means in practice
You are still responsible for ordinary couch-gaming basics: two usable controllers, a display, and a version of the game that contains the supported local mode. The important difference is that you are not adding a third-party framework or replacing the game’s player logic. What Resident Evil 2 Remake actually offers
The base game is not native co-op

That official player count describes the unmodified game. Installing a mod does not change what Capcom shipped or turn the feature into an officially supported mode.
The local-play option is a PC community mod
The mod listing titled Local Couch Co-op (formally known as HUNK’y Friend) advertises several ways to play locally. Its author describes shared-screen and split-screen modes, along with a fixed-camera mode that uses another mod, an AI-companion mode and a classic mode. These are the author’s available options, not Capcom menu items, and their behavior can change as the mod is updated.
Dependencies and version drift
The listing requires the latest ReFramework. It also discusses controller-related issues and warns that an optional controller DLL can be associated with startup crashes. Because both the mod and its dependencies can change, the live page is the authority for the version, installation order and compatibility notes. Do not rely on an old screenshot, an archived video or an installer guide that does not identify the same release.

How to set up Resident Evil 5 for couch co-op
The exact menu names can vary by edition, but the supported workflow is deliberately short. Use this order so you can identify whether a problem belongs to the game or to your hardware.
- Install and update the game. On Windows, make sure the February 27, 2023 update described in Capcom’s Steam announcement has been applied. On another platform, use that edition’s normal update process.
- Prepare two controllers. Connect both before launching or before entering the local game menu. Confirm that the operating system or console sees each controller separately; avoid assuming that two lights or two USB cables mean the game has assigned both devices.
- Launch the local or offline mode. Look for the game’s split-screen or offline co-op option rather than an online invite flow. The supported feature is local play beside you, not a requirement to create an online session.

The mod is best treated as a small PC project rather than a toggle. The following sequence keeps the supported game files, framework and optional components distinguishable.
- Confirm the platform. The described local-co-op route is for the PC version of Resident Evil 2 (2019). It is not a method for the console edition.

Split-screen

Choose by your actual priority
You want two people playing tonight
Choose Resident Evil 5. Its official local mode is the lower-friction path, and Capcom explicitly identifies couch play as an intended way to play the series. A supported feature is preferable when the objective is simply to sit down and start a game.
You specifically want the Resident Evil 2 Remake
The mod is the relevant option if the remake’s setting, characters or presentation are non-negotiable. Accept that you are choosing a PC-only community setup, not buying a version with native co-op. Set aside time for installation and testing, and keep the clean-game recovery path described above.
You are buying for a mixed group of players
Resident Evil 5 is easier to hand to someone who did not install the mod. Only one controller appears in Resident Evil 5
First check that the operating system or console detects both devices independently. Then review the game’s player-assignment prompt and any controller-remapping layer. Resident Evil 2 launches but the second player cannot join
