If you’re already signed in to a trusted iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro, or Mac, change your Apple Account password in its settings and verify with the device passcode or Mac login password. If you can’t use a trusted device, try Apple’s recovery options through the Apple Support app or iforgot.apple.com. Account recovery is the fallback when Apple can’t verify you another way, and it may take several days or longer.
Apple now calls an Apple ID an Apple Account; the same email address or phone number and password still work for sign-in. Many people still search for “Apple ID password” or “iCloud password,” but these refer to the password for the same account.

How do I reset my Apple Account password on a trusted device?
A trusted device is one already signed in to your Apple Account with two-factor authentication. If you can use one, this is usually the most direct reset route and can avoid account recovery.
iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name, then tap Sign-In & Security.
- Tap Change Password.
- Enter the device passcode and follow the prompts.
Mac
Start at the Apple menu and open System Settings. Choose your Apple Account and go to its sign-in and security settings to change the password. Labels and layout can vary by macOS version.

How do I reset my password without my trusted device?
If you expect to regain access to a trusted device or trusted phone number soon, wait and try that route first; Apple says it may be quicker. Otherwise, use the Apple Support app on a borrowed device or start at iforgot.apple.com.
Use the Apple Support app on a borrowed device
- Open the Apple Support app.
- Tap Support Tools, then Reset Password.
- Choose Help Someone Else and follow the instructions.
Apple says information entered on the borrowed device is not stored there. On the web, Apple may redirect you to a trusted device when one is available.

Be ready for the verification Apple offers
The available checks depend on your account setup; not everyone will see every option. Apple may ask you to use a trusted phone number, a recovery contact, the email address associated with the account, a credit card check, a recovery key, or a security key. Follow the options shown for your account.

What happens during Apple Account recovery?
If Apple cannot verify your identity through the other options, it may begin account recovery. Apple says the wait can be several days or longer and that contacting Apple Support cannot shorten it. Apple does not give a typical wait-time distribution or a success rate on the cited support pages, so there is no fixed completion date to rely on.

- Follow the instructions for the method you used to start recovery. For a request started on the web, Apple says to turn off your Apple devices while you wait.
- Signing in or using a device that is still signed in to the account may cancel the request.
- If you remember the password or regain access to a trusted device, the recovery request may no longer be needed; check Apple’s instructions before taking action during a pending request.
How do recovery contacts and recovery keys differ?
Both can help you regain access, but they work differently and carry different risks.
| Option | How it helps | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Recovery contact | A contact can give you a six-digit recovery code when you need one. | The contact does not get access to your account. Apple allows up to five recovery contacts. |
| Recovery key | A 28-character code that you use as part of account recovery. | Turning it on disables standard account recovery. Apple says it cannot provide a lost recovery key; losing it can leave you permanently locked out. |
What if you think someone took over your account?
Unrequested two-factor verification codes, unfamiliar devices or account changes, or a password that suddenly stops working can be signs of compromise. Do not treat an unsolicited code as a reset instruction or share it with anyone.

Use a trusted device if you still have access to change the password, then review your personal and security details, remove devices you do not recognize, and check that you control the email addresses and phone numbers associated with the account. If you cannot sign in, use Apple’s official recovery process.
