A 2026 study combines carbon nanofibers and carbon black in flexible PDMS to tune how a stretchable pressure sensor conducts electricity under load. In AZoNano’s account, the resulting sensors covered a reported 0–500 kPa range, while a separate row-and-column readout approach addressed crosstalk in larger tactile arrays. These are laboratory results, not evidence of a commercially available or clinically validated device.
How does this stretchable pressure sensor work?
The sensing material is a composite: flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) holds a mixed network of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and carbon black (CB) particles. CNFs provide longer conductive pathways; smaller CB particles can sit between them and act as local bridges across gaps. Together, the two filler shapes form a network whose electrical connections change as the material deforms.

When pressure compresses the PDMS, the spacing between conductive fillers changes and additional electrical paths can form. The composite’s resistance therefore changes with pressure, giving the readout a signal to map to applied load. The researchers varied the proportions of the fillers to tune the network and its pressure response rather than treating one composition as universally best.

What do carbon nanofibers and carbon black each contribute?
The distinction is geometric and functional: longer CNFs can connect across greater distances, while CB particles can fill local gaps in the network. The mixed structure gives researchers a composition-level control over how readily pathways form as the polymer is pressed. The AZoNano report does not provide a basis for reducing that design choice to a single ideal ratio for every use.

Filler loading brings a tradeoff. AZoNano reports that increasing loading stiffened the composites and reduced stretchability; at higher loadings, CNF-filled PDMS became stiffer than CB-filled PDMS. Sensitivity, useful pressure range, stiffness, and stretchability therefore need to be considered together for a particular sensor design.
How sensitive and fast were the reported sensors?
AZoNano’s October 5, 2026 coverage of the study reports these performance figures. They are figures reported by that account, not independently rechecked here.

| Measure | Reported result |
|---|---|
| Sensing range | 0–500 kPa, as reported by AZoNano in 2026 |
| Minimum detectable pressure | 0.3 kPa, as reported by AZoNano in 2026 |
| Distinguishable resistance responses | 5–350 kPa, as reported by AZoNano in 2026 |
| Response time | About 86 ms, as reported by AZoNano in 2026 |
| Recovery time | 97 ms, as reported by AZoNano in 2026 |
| Cycle test | Stable resistance response over 3,500 loading cycles under 250 kPa compression at 2 Hz, as reported by AZoNano in 2026 |
The values describe different aspects of performance: the full reported range is not the same as the 5–350 kPa interval over which resistance responses were described as distinguishable. The accessible account does not justify comparing these figures with other sensors tested under different conditions.
What composition did the researchers use in the arrays?
For the reported array formulation, the study used 7 wt% CNFs and 5 wt% CB, according to AZoNano. The arrays used silver-sputtered PET electrodes and a conductive interfacial layer. The team fabricated 4 × 4, 8 × 8, and 16 × 16 pixel arrays.

The report also describes xylene as a solvent and dispersion aid, ultrasonication to reduce CB agglomeration and CNF entanglement, and a process involving PDMS and curing agent followed by degassing and curing. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine filler distribution. Those summary details are not a complete reproducible protocol or safety guidance.
How do tactile sensor arrays reduce crosstalk?
In an array, a measured signal can be affected by electrical paths beyond the pixel being read. This crosstalk challenge becomes more important as sensors are arranged in rows and columns. The reported system used row-column scanning and a Kirchhoff’s Current Law equivalent-circuit model to address crosstalk. Normalization was also used to handle differences in baseline resistance.

- High-quality materials: The flexible film pressure sensor is made of polyester film with excellent mechanical properties, high-conductivity materials, and nano-scale pressure-sensitive material. The top layer is a flexible film with a pressure-sensitive composite; the bottom layer is a flexible film with printed conductive traces. Ideal for Arduino prototyping, sleep monitoring, smart footwear, pressure switches, counters, medical devices, robotics, and industrial process control.
- Durable & stable: Tested with a 2 kg weight impact, rated for millions of cycles. Low drift and tight tolerance: individual sensor resistance ±3%. Activation time <0.01 s; response time <10 ms. Trigger force ≈20 g. Default trigger condition: sensor resistance <200 kΩ. Operating temperature: −40 °C to +85 °C.
- Packing: Each plastic box contains 4 film pressure sensors. Thickness ≈0.4 mm. Sensing range: 20 g–2 kg. Built on a flexible PET substrate for conformal mounting on curved or flat surfaces without loss of sensitivity. Sensors are used in series with a fixed resistor; measure the voltage across the fixed resistor: Vout = Vcc * R0 / (R0 + RS) As a rule, choose the fixed resistor R0 ≈ 1/3 to 1/2 of the sensor’s application resistance range. Selecting an appropriate fixed resistor can make pressure vs. output voltage approximately linear over a certain pressure range.
- Usage instructions: Install the sensor on a solid, flat, and smooth surface. Protect it from sharp objects. Use a cover layer (polycarbonate film or elastomer) for protection. The sensor material is not recommended for direct liquid contact and requires waterproofing if exposed. Overload will not permanently damage the sensor; it will return to normal operation after the load is removed. For designs involving motion, use soft rubber or a spring as part of the trigger mechanism.
- Pressure-threshold switch application: A typical threshold switch circuit uses a Wheatstone bridge and a voltage comparator. When pressure increases and the sensor resistance drops below R1, the comparator input U1+ exceeds U1− and the comparator output goes high. The high output can trigger downstream devices (for example, a relay to control LEDs, buzzers, motors, etc.).
These readout measures address an engineering problem distinct from tuning the sensing composite: a pressure-sensitive material alone does not explain how a large array can identify which pixels are loaded. The report’s three array sizes demonstrate fabrication at different scales, but do not by themselves establish deployment-ready performance.

AZoNano reports that an 8 × 8 array was used for tactile mapping and trajectory tracking. In laboratory demonstrations, it recorded repeated loading between 5 and 40 kPa, traced the letter shapes “Z,” “J,” and “U,” and mapped outlines of a cup, key, and chip. These examples show pattern reconstruction from sensor responses; they do not establish a finished wearable, robotic product, or real-world deployment.
