Eggs belonging to Qianlong shouhu, a roughly one-ton dinosaur from Early Jurassic rocks in Guizhou, China, had a mineralized calcium-carbonate shell—but researchers interpret that shell as leathery rather than conventionally hard. The finding complicates the long-standing idea that the earliest dinosaurs laid wholly soft eggs.
What the Guizhou fossils contain
The fossils come from the Lower Jurassic Ziliujing Formation in Pingba District, Anshun City, Guizhou Province. China University of Geosciences dates the deposits to approximately 190 million years ago. The assemblage is unusually informative because it includes both dinosaur bodies and reproductive remains: three adult Qianlong shouhu skeletons and five clutches containing embryos.

A Chinese Academy of Sciences feature describes the animal as about six metres long and weighing roughly one ton. Those figures are institutional feature estimates, not measurements derived from the eggshell study itself.

Egg size and preserved clutches
Most eggs are elliptical and measure approximately 11.5 × 9.4 centimetres. The smallest preserved clutch contains three eggs and the largest 16. These counts should not be read as the dinosaur’s complete clutch sizes: Han and colleagues caution that incomplete preservation could have removed eggs from the original groups.

A real mineralized shell
Thin sections show interlocking columnar shell units, pores between some units and calcite arranged in mammillary cones near the inner surface. Chemical analyses also support calcite in the shell. In other words, this was not an entirely unmineralized membrane.
Across 30 samples, the calcareous layer averaged 160 ± 26 micrometres, with measurements from 115 to 230 micrometres. Weathering may have stripped away part of the outer shell, so the original layer could have been thicker.
Why researchers call the eggs leathery
The classification does not rest on shell thickness alone. The authors combine several traits:

- The shell is thin relative to the mass of the egg.
- The outer surface is rugose rather than uniformly smooth.
- The eggs are somewhat irregular in shape.
- The shell survives in small fragments.
- Its mineralized microstructure differs from the much thicker shells typical of many non-avian dinosaur eggs.
Han and colleagues compare this combination with leathery eggs. Their wording matters: the study does not claim that Qianlong eggs were soft and unmineralized. It identifies a calcareous layer whose properties fit a leathery category between wholly soft-shelled and strongly hard-shelled eggs.
How thick was the shell compared with other dinosaurs?
The paper places the measurement in context:
| Egg or dinosaur comparison | Reported calcareous-layer thickness | How to read the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Qianlong shouhu | 160 ± 26 μm average; 115–230 μm range; 30 samples | Measured fossil shell, potentially reduced by weathering |
| Massospondylus | About 80–100 μm | Qianlong is thicker in the cited comparison |
| Known soft-shelled eggs | Usually under 60 μm | Qianlong is more substantially mineralized |
| Most other non-avian dinosaur eggs | About 400–4,750 μm | Qianlong is far thinner than typical hard eggs |
These comparisons come from Han and colleagues’ analysis and are most useful when considered alongside surface texture, shape, fragment size and internal structure. Organic-matter signals by themselves are not proof of a soft shell.
What this changes about dinosaur egg evolution
The fossils challenge a simple evolutionary story in which dinosaurs began with soft eggs and later evolved mineralized shells. The Qianlong material shows that an early dinosaur could produce a recognizable calcite shell while retaining traits associated with leathery eggs.

Han and colleagues’ ancestral-state analyses go further: they infer that the earliest dinosaur eggs were probably leathery, relatively small and elliptical, with relatively long eggshell units. This is a model-based reconstruction from comparative data, not a fossil directly identified as the first dinosaur egg. The authors also place major changes in egg morphology early in theropod evolution and describe the overall history as complex.
Associate Professor Fenglu Han, the study’s first and corresponding author, said the findings “have challenged the previous theory that dinosaurs originated from soft-shell eggs” and changed understanding of early dinosaur egg structure.
Other clues from the embryos
The team interprets the embryos as evidence for synchronous hatching, meaning eggs in a clutch may have hatched at roughly the same time. The fossils also preserve a prehatching posture that the researchers view as transitional between crocodilian and living-bird patterns. These are interpretations of the preserved anatomy, not observations of behavior.

Were Qianlong’s eggs completely soft?
No. The fossils preserve a calcite-rich, mineralized shell layer. Researchers interpret the eggs as leathery because their relative thinness, rough surface, irregular shape and fragmentary preservation fit that category better than either wholly soft or strongly hard-shelled eggs.

Is 160 micrometres the original full shell thickness?
It is the measured average calcareous-layer thickness across 30 samples. Weathering may have removed outer shell, so the original shell could have been thicker.
The Bottom Line
Qianlong shouhu shows that an early dinosaur could lay eggs with a genuine calcite shell that was nevertheless relatively thin and leathery. The result revises, rather than simply reverses, ideas about how dinosaur eggs evolved.
