Researchers tested language-model agents in a spacecraft simulation built with the Kerbal Space Program game engine, and their team placed second in a competition for autonomous spacecraft operators. The study is a notable simulation result—not proof that today’s ChatGPT can safely pilot an operational vehicle.
What did the researchers actually test?
Alejandro Carrasco, Victor Rodriguez-Fernandez, and Richard Linares studied large language models as operators in the Kerbal Space Program Differential Games (KSPDG) challenge. The work appeared in Advances in Space Research, volume 76, issue 6, pages 3480–3497, on September 15, 2025; a preprint was submitted to arXiv on May 26, 2025. The published paper describes simulated spacecraft tasks, not a flight experiment.

KSPDG is a competition in which teams build autonomous agents for non-cooperative space-operation scenarios. Examples include pursuing an evasive satellite and carrying out proximity operations involving multiple satellites. The challenge evaluates performance using measures such as mission completion time, fuel use, and relative distance. MIT Lincoln Laboratory’s challenge description outlines the competition setting.
How did a language model control a spacecraft in the simulation?
The researchers built a translation loop between the simulator and the models. Information about the simulated vehicle’s state and its goal was converted into text and supplied to a language model. The model produced a response, which the researchers’ system translated into actions for the simulated vehicle.

The study examined GPT-3.5 and LLaMA models using different approaches, including prompt engineering, few-shot prompting, and fine-tuning. Its prompt began: “You operate as an autonomous agent controlling a pursuit spacecraft.” That wording describes the task presented to the model; it does not mean the model was connected to a real vehicle.
What does “second place” mean?
The authors report that their LLM-based approach ranked second in the KSPDG competition. That is a meaningful result within a specialized, game-based spacecraft-control challenge. It is not a general ranking of consumer chatbots, a comparison of all autonomous-control systems, or a certification for spaceflight.

The competition’s measures—such as fuel consumption, mission timing, and relative distance—describe performance in its own simulated scenarios. A placing there shows how an approach performed under those conditions; it does not establish how it would behave amid real spacecraft hardware, communications constraints, or the consequences of an actual mission.

The paper’s percentages belong to particular experimental comparisons, not to ChatGPT as a general-purpose product. In the paper’s fine-tuning comparison, the baseline GPT setup had a 36.8% failure rate, while a simple fine-tuning setup reported 0.0%. In a separate chain-of-thought comparison, the baseline GPT agent failed in 37.5% of runs, while the chain-of-thought setup reported 0.00% failures.

Those figures come from distinct setups and should not be combined into a single reliability estimate or treated as a head-to-head comparison across every method. The study’s broader point is that outcomes were sensitive to prompting and training choices. The reported results concern the models and test conditions in the paper, including GPT-3.5—not newer ChatGPT models that were not evaluated there.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does this show that ChatGPT can pilot a real spacecraft?
No. The experiment demonstrates language-model agents operating simulated spacecraft in a game-engine challenge. It does not show that researchers connected ChatGPT to a live spacecraft, that a current ChatGPT model can operate one, or that any such system is safe or qualified for flight. Performance in the KSPDG environment alone cannot establish real-world reliability.

The result is best understood as an early demonstration of a possible control architecture: turn a simulated system’s state into text, have a language model reason about the task, and convert its output into actions. Whether that approach can meet the much broader requirements of operational spacecraft control is not established by this competition result.
