The available sources do not verify that a Republican blamed Barack Obama for 2026 gas prices, or document the alleged online backlash. They do show why prices climbed and changed sharply: crude oil is the largest factor in U.S. pump prices, and disruption tied to the Iran conflict affected oil-market conditions. Those facts explain price pressure; they do not establish that one president caused it.
What the available record does—and does not—show
The headline’s specific allegation needs an original post, an identifiable speaker, and the surrounding context before it can be treated as fact. The sources available here do not establish those details or substantiate the claim that Americans “roasted” the speaker. That is a limit of the record, not proof that no such post exists.
What can be checked is the broader context: national gasoline averages rose and fell during 2026, while reporting connected the surge to the Iran war and uncertainty around oil trade routes. Neither a general explanation of prices nor a poll about living costs verifies a particular political statement or its reception.
How U.S. gas prices moved in 2026
These are national averages reported on specific dates, not prices at every station. They show a volatile year rather than one unchanged price:

|---|---|---|
| May 21, 2026 | $4.56 per gallon | AAA reported the peak for regular gasoline; AAA’s gas price information. |
| July 9, 2026 | $3.84 per gallon | AAA reported the average after the May peak. Its July update described prices climbing again amid uncertainty around the ceasefire and Strait of Hormuz; AAA’s July 9 report. |
| August 27, 2026 | $4.09 per gallon | AAA reported the average and continued volatility, saying August was on track to be the most expensive August on record; AAA’s August 27 report. |
| September 18, 2026 | $4.48 per gallon | AP reported AAA’s national average, up about 17 cents in a week and $1.27 from a year earlier; published September 20. This is a dated observation, not an October 3 price; Associated Press report. |
AAA’s October 1 newsroom listing said the national average had dipped after record-setting September fuel prices; it does not provide an October 3 figure here. A dated national average should not be mistaken for a local station’s price or a live quote. AAA newsroom.
Why pump prices rose: crude oil and supply disruptions
Crude oil is a major input
The U.S. Energy Information Administration identifies crude oil as the largest factor in retail gasoline prices. Refining, distribution, taxes, and other conditions also contribute, so the crude-oil relationship is not a one-to-one explanation for every change at the pump. EIA’s January 2026 outlook.

Shipping-route uncertainty can affect oil markets
AAA’s July 9 update cited uncertainty surrounding the ceasefire and the Strait of Hormuz as prices began climbing again. AP’s September reporting linked the gasoline surge and voter frustration to the Iran war. This is relevant context for volatile oil and fuel markets, but it does not by itself calculate how much of a given pump-price change came from the conflict.
An earlier forecast is not a later price observation
In January 2026, EIA forecast lower average gasoline prices in 2026 and 2027 as crude oil prices fell. That was a forecast made before the later events described in July, August, and September; it should not be presented as a guarantee or as a contradiction of subsequent reported prices. EIA also said its forecast horizon typically showed the West Coast with the highest prices and the Gulf Coast with the lowest. EIA’s January 2026 outlook.

Can a president be blamed for gas prices?
A president’s policies may be part of a broader argument about energy markets, but the evidence above does not isolate a president’s actions as the cause of a specific 2026 price increase. Crude oil is the largest price factor identified by EIA, while the dated reports describe market volatility and conflict-related supply-route uncertainty. Establishing individual responsibility would require evidence connecting a specific policy to a measured price effect—not just the fact that prices rose during an administration.
Political polling is not a substitute for that causal evidence. An AP-NORC poll reported October 1 found that 17% of U.S. adults approved of President Trump’s handling of the cost of living, and that most respondents blamed his policies for rising costs. The question concerned cost of living broadly, not who was responsible for gasoline prices specifically. Associated Press report on the AP-NORC poll.

What would verify the alleged Obama-blame post?
- The original post or an archived copy, with its date and platform.
- The speaker’s identity and enough surrounding context to establish what was actually claimed.
- Original replies or other reliable records showing the scale and nature of the response.
Without those, the claim that a Republican blamed Obama and was “roasted” should be treated as unverified, not repeated as a documented event.
