Reports say a Russian Mi-8 helicopter came down in Voronezh Oblast on October 1, 2026, killing three crew members. Friendly fire has been alleged, but the cause has not been independently verified and Russian authorities had not publicly confirmed a shootdown in reporting published October 2. The often-repeated £11 million figure is also an unsubstantiated valuation, not an established price for the aircraft.

Friendly fire is an allegation, not an established cause. Initial accounts reportedly described Russian air defence as responsible; later claims pointed to a Russian Su-35 crew that allegedly mistook the Mi-8 for a Ukrainian drone. The Insider reported that the Su-35 account came from Russian pro-war Telegram channels, including Fighterbomber. The Insider’s report

The accounts differ, and neither establishes what happened. In the incident coverage available on October 2, no public Russian official confirmation of a shootdown or its cause was reported. It is therefore more accurate to describe this as a reported helicopter loss accompanied by competing claims about friendly fire than to state that Russia accidentally shot it down.
What is an Mi-8?
