News reports say Kansas State and former men’s basketball coach Jerome Tang have settled their buyout dispute for $12 million. KMAN reported October 1, 2026, that The Mercury confirmed the amount with Kansas State; KCTV separately attributed the figure to ESPN reporter Pete Thamel and said payments would run through the end of 2027. The signed agreement and an official university announcement of the settlement were not among the public materials located, so the amount and payment period remain attributed to those reports.
How much is Kansas State reportedly paying Jerome Tang?
The reported settlement is $12 million. KMAN said The Mercury confirmed the figure with Kansas State, while KCTV cited ESPN’s Pete Thamel for the $12 million agreement and reported that payment would continue through the end of 2027. Neither report establishes a detailed installment schedule, specific payment dates, or other conditions.
The dispute had centered on a reported buyout of about $18.7 million. KMAN described that as the amount at issue, not a sum established by a court or independently verified in a public settlement document. The two reported figures therefore describe the settlement and the disputed buyout, not a court finding about what Tang was legally owed.
Why did Kansas State part ways with Tang?
Kansas State announced on February 15, 2026, that Tang was leaving the program effective immediately. In its statement, the university cited his recent public comments and conduct as well as the direction of the men’s basketball program. Athletic Director Gene Taylor said, “This was a decision that was made in the best interest of our university and men’s basketball program.” That statement records the university’s rationale; it is not a court’s determination about the contract.

The events before the announcement
Four days earlier, on February 11, Cincinnati defeated Kansas State 91–62. KCTV reported that Tang criticized his players in a postgame press conference. The game score is recorded on Kansas State Athletics’ official game page; the characterization of Tang’s comments here is attributed to KCTV rather than presented as a quotation from a transcript.
What did Tang’s contract provide?
Kansas State’s September 25, 2023, announcement said Tang had signed a seven-year extension through April 30, 2030. The university’s public summary listed a $3 million base salary for 2023–24, rising annually to $3.6 million in 2029–30, and four retention bonuses of $200,000 each.

Those published terms provide context for the buyout dispute, but they do not by themselves establish the settlement amount or explain how the reported payment period is structured. The $12 million figure comes from the October 2026 reporting described above, not from the 2023 contract announcement.
Was Tang fired “for cause”?
KCTV characterized Kansas State’s position as an attempted firing for cause. Kansas State’s public statement cited comments, conduct, and the program’s direction, but the public materials cited in the reports do not include a court ruling deciding whether the termination met a contractual definition of cause. “For cause” should therefore be understood as part of the dispute’s reported framing, not as an adjudicated conclusion.

Has Tang filed a lawsuit?
KCTV reported that Tang had not filed a lawsuit. That report does not establish that every relevant record or agreement is publicly accessible. The Kansas Judicial Branch explains that some court records may be exempt, sealed, or unavailable through its public online access. No public settlement document was located in the cited reporting, so the reported terms should not be treated as independently verified contract language.
