A “self-driving company” is not a business without employees. In Replit CEO and co-founder Amjad Masad’s formulation, software agents handle much of the operational and coordination work while people choose the destination, decide which problems matter, make difficult trade-offs, apply taste and remain accountable for results.
Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco on October 16, 2026, Masad said Replit’s operations “entirely changed” as its agents became more reliable. The company’s own July 16, 2026 account describes a model in which people set goals, agents gather context and execute work, automated checks assess the result, and humans step in when judgment is required.

What Replit means by a self-driving company
The phrase describes a division of labor, not the elimination of human leadership. People still determine the company’s direction and accept responsibility for consequences. Agents perform repeatable investigation, coordination and execution across the systems where work happens.

How Replit’s agent loop works
A support ticket becomes an investigated change
TechCrunch’s account of Replit gives a concrete example. When a support ticket arrives, an agent examines related GitHub issues, the codebase and Linear tickets before presenting the employee with enriched context. The human decides what to do next. After submitting a patch, that person can click to deploy another agent to carry out the next step.
Masad described this as a loop in which agents do most of the work but “human judgment” remains in the middle. The human is not merely approving a finished answer; they are deciding whether the proposed response is appropriate and whether it should be deployed.

The wider internal system
Replit says its agents now investigate production incidents, review pull requests, answer internal questions, analyze business data, triage support, research sales accounts and improve Replit Agent itself. The company describes the system as expanding around a common pattern:

- An agent gathers context. It searches connected company data and tools rather than relying only on the initial prompt.
- The agent performs work. Depending on the task, that may mean analysis, code changes, a draft response or operational steps.
- Results are checked. Automated and agent-based verification look for errors or missing requirements.
- Humans decide when judgment is needed. The work is escalated when policy, ambiguity, risk or taste cannot be handled safely by automation.
What Replit says has changed
The figures below are Replit’s internal reports for 2026, not independent audits. They cover different periods and measures, so they should not be treated as one standardized productivity benchmark.

More code is not automatically better software, which is why the quality and incident figures are significant to Replit’s argument. They are still company-reported results rather than a controlled external study, and the published description does not establish that the same gains will occur at other organizations.
What employees do in this model
Masad said agents are changing the work employees spend time on rather than simply removing their jobs. Replit employees, he said, spend more time deciding what to build, discussing architecture and whiteboarding. Replit’s July account captures the intended experience in the phrase: “They feel like they’ve been promoted.”

This is a shift toward higher-level decisions, but it is not a promise that every existing role will remain unchanged. In a Platformer interview, Masad forecast that there will be “more jobs, but also … more companies.” He also said companies will become smaller and that layoffs are certain. Those are his predictions, not established employment data.
The same interview put another three-year forecast on the table: fewer standalone apps and more agents using apps on people’s behalf. If that occurs, some software work could move from directly operating interfaces to supervising agents that operate several services.

A self-driving workflow is only as dependable as the information and access given to its agents. Replit says it connected agents to GitHub, Google Cloud Platform, Azure, Linear, Notion, Slack and Zendesk behind access policies, token proxies, audit logging and a ZeroTrust network.
Those controls address a central risk: an agent that can read company systems or deploy changes has operational power, not just conversational ability. Replit says it is still building policy, permission, security and cost controls for broad customer deployment. That qualification limits how far the internal example can be generalized today.
- Permission boundaries: each agent needs only the accounts, repositories and actions required for its task.
- Reliable company data: stale tickets, undocumented decisions or conflicting records can produce confident but incorrect work.
- Verification loops: tests, reviews and other checks must catch failures before an automated action reaches users or production.
- Human escalation: ambiguous, high-impact or irreversible decisions need a clearly assigned person who can stop or redirect the workflow.
- Cost controls: broad agent use can create unexpected compute, API or infrastructure spending without limits and monitoring.
How to evaluate a “self-driving” claim
The label is useful only when a company explains what is actually delegated. These five questions separate a controlled operating model from a marketing description:

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
Replit’s announcement shows a company using agents across engineering, support, data and sales workflows while retaining human decisions at key points. It does not demonstrate that offices can run without people, that agents can safely receive unrestricted access, or that the reported productivity changes will transfer unchanged to other companies.
The practical thesis is narrower and more consequential: organizations may be able to give employees leverage over larger amounts of operational work, provided they build the permissions, data quality, verification and escalation mechanisms that keep human judgment in control.
