Its documented Recall path runs semantic similarity alongside keyword matching, entity-graph traversal and temporal search, then fuses and ranks the results. For meeting notes, that makes it a different retrieval design from a vector-only index. The public sources, however, do not show that it answers meeting questions more accurately than a well-configured vector index. The headline describes a personal switch, and neither the product documentation nor the academic paper describes a meeting-notes migration or publishes before-and-after measurements for one. This article separates what the architecture does, what the benchmark figures cover, and what a fair test would still need to establish.
How Hindsight stores meeting notes
Hindsight’s documentation describes three operations. Retain stores and structures information, Recall retrieves it, and Reflect reasons over stored memories. For meeting notes, the input side is Retain. An application sends natural-language text, optionally with context and timestamps. The documentation’s examples include meeting content with metadata such as meeting date and attendees, so meeting notes are a documented input pattern rather than a workaround.

During Retain, Hindsight analyzes the text with AI, extracts individual memories, assigns each one a memory type (world facts, experiences or observations), indexes them and stores them in a memory bank. The quickstart says extraction covers facts, temporal data, entities and relationships.

What the documentation does not establish is extraction accuracy. Whether a decision, its owner and its date are pulled out correctly from your transcripts depends on your note format and on the model doing the extraction. That is the first thing a meeting-notes deployment should measure.

How Recall combines four retrieval methods
A Recall query is first analyzed for meaning, terms, entities and time references. Four retrieval methods then run against the memory bank:

Results from these methods are fused, relevance-ranked and optionally filtered. The documentation models literal time-aware questions such as “What did Alice tell me last spring?” and “What happened in June?”, which show the kind of query the temporal arm is meant to serve.
The practical difference is that semantic similarity is one arm, not the whole system. A vector-only index relies on embeddings for exact identifiers and date constraints, which usually requires separate metadata filtering to handle reliably. Hindsight’s design routes those parts of a query to keyword, entity and time methods instead. That is a documented capability. Whether it returns the correct meeting for your questions is a separate question that the sources do not answer.

Reflect and the difference between recorded facts and inference
Reflect reasons over stored memories and can persist new connections as observations. The quickstart’s sample use cases are project-risk analysis, sales-message reflection and support-question analysis. None of them is a meeting-notes evaluation.
For meeting notes, the relevant feature is the separation between what was said (world facts and experiences) and what the system inferred (observations). Whether that separation survives into the interface a user sees depends on how your application displays results. The documentation describes the memory types but does not promise complete provenance, so a workflow that needs to cite the exact sentence behind each answer has to verify that link itself.
What the paper reports, and what it does not cover
The paper “Hindsight is 20/20: Building Agent Memory that Retains, Recalls, and Reflects” is dated December 14, 2025, and lists Chris Latimer, Nicoló Boschi, Andrew Neeser, Chris Bartholomew, Gaurav Srivastava, Xuan Wang and Naren Ramakrishnan as authors. Its abstract states:

The paper reports three headline results, each with its own scope:
- Overall accuracy rose from 39% to 83.6% when a 20B open-source model was used with Hindsight, compared with a full-context baseline using the same backbone.
- 91.4% on LongMemEval, with a larger backbone model. The paper attributes this result to scaling the backbone further.
- Up to 89.61% on LoCoMo, compared with 75.78% for the strongest prior open system.
These are benchmark datasets under the paper’s stated model setups. They do not measure meeting-note retrieval, and they are not a direct comparison of Hindsight with a vector-only system on identical meeting data.

The project README makes further comparative claims. It calls Hindsight the most accurate agent-memory system tested and says collaborators at Virginia Tech’s Sanghani Center and The Washington Post reproduced its benchmark data, while competitors’ scores are self-reported. Those are the project’s statements, not an independent audit of every system. The README dates its reported results to January 2026 and links to a live benchmark page, so current standings should be checked against that page rather than against this article.

Self-hosting keeps the memory store under your control, at the cost of operating the database. The managed option shifts that work to the provider. Choosing between them depends on privacy requirements and operational capacity, and both should be verified against current documentation before a decision.

What a fair test of the switch would need
A replacement claim for meeting notes becomes checkable only when the comparison is recorded. A fair test would need:
- The note format and volume: transcript or hand-written summaries, meeting length, number of meetings and attendees per meeting.
- The vector baseline in full: chunking strategy, embedding model, metadata filters and any reranker.
- The Hindsight version, the model used for Retain and Recall, and any configuration changed from defaults.
- One fixed set of questions, with expected answers written down before either system is run, grouped by type: exact identifiers, person-attributed statements, time-bounded questions and questions that span several meetings.
- Pass criteria for each question type, scored the same way for both systems.
- Latency and cost per query and per ingested meeting.
- Failures recorded alongside wins, including wrong attributions and missed dates.
Without those records, a switch like the one in the headline is a design choice that the documentation supports, not a measured improvement.
