DBMS_CLOUD_PIPELINE is a credible replacement for one specific part of an AWS Glue job: recurring ingestion of files from object storage into tables in Oracle’s Autonomous AI Database, the service the title calls Autonomous Database. Oracle’s documentation does not establish it as a one-for-one replacement for Glue’s wider ETL, Data Catalog, workflow, connection, and event-trigger features. Describe a migration as complete only after you have inventoried the real job and tested the boundaries below.
This is a documentation-based migration evaluation, not a report from a completed migration. It contains no runtime, cost, or reliability measurements, and nothing here describes a Glue job that was actually moved.

What DBMS_CLOUD_PIPELINE does
Oracle documents two pipeline modes, LOAD and EXPORT. Both are managed through the DBMS_CLOUD_PIPELINE package, whose reference is on the Oracle package reference. The conceptual overview is on the Oracle pipeline overview.

A load pipeline periodically looks for new files in object storage and loads them into a target table. Oracle’s overview introduces its behavior with this sentence: “A load pipeline operates as follows (some of these features are configurable using pipeline attributes):”. Loading runs through DBMS_CLOUD.COPY_DATA. The documented load formats are JSON, CSV, XML, Avro, ORC, and Parquet.

EXPORT pipelines
An export pipeline writes table or query results to object storage. A timestamp or date key_column makes the export incremental. Without a key column, Oracle says the entire table or query result is uploaded on every execution. That difference matters for both cost and file volume, so set the key column deliberately if the Glue job currently writes only changed rows.
Scheduling and on-demand runs
Continuous work runs as scheduled jobs. The package reference documents a default interval of 15 minutes. That is a configuration default, not a performance figure. The overview notes that some pipeline features are configurable through pipeline attributes, so check the current definition of your pipeline rather than assuming the interval is fixed. RUN_PIPELINE_ONCE performs an on-demand run, which is useful for proving a pipeline works before starting recurring execution.
Package operations
The package exposes create, drop, get-definition, reset, run-once, set-attribute, start, and stop operations. The reference documents GET_DEFINITION and RUN_PIPELINE_ONCE in detail. The sources consulted do not describe what RESET clears, so verify its effect in a test environment before using it on a pipeline that has already loaded data.
Inventory the Glue job before you map it
AWS describes Glue as a managed ETL service with a Data Catalog, an ETL engine, and a scheduler that handles dependency resolution, job monitoring, and retries. A Glue job runs a script that connects to sources, processes data, and writes to targets. The surrounding AWS features include scheduled jobs, run metrics, logging, Data Catalog connections, IAM roles, and workflow orchestration. See the AWS Glue API reference, AWS job management guide, and AWS connections guide.
A job that looks like “just ingestion” often depends on some of those features. Record the following for each job before choosing a target design:
- Source and target locations, and whether files are overwritten, appended, or replayed.
- File formats, compression, schema, and type conversions.
- Every transformation the script performs, including joins, filters, derived columns, and deduplication.
- Catalog tables, crawlers, and any dependency on Data Catalog metadata.
- Schedule, event triggers, and upstream or downstream job dependencies.
- Retry behavior, job bookmarks, and any replay logic.
- IAM policies, secrets, and network paths. The minimum privileges for a Glue job are described in the AWS IAM guidance.
- Dashboards, alerts, and who receives them.
- Data volumes and arrival patterns, such as typical file size, peak arrival times, and late deliveries.
Capability comparison
The table compares what each service documents. Where the Oracle pages consulted do not describe a capability, the cell says so. “Not stated” does not mean the capability is absent; it means this evaluation found no documented equivalent.
| Area | AWS Glue (as documented) | DBMS_CLOUD_PIPELINE (as documented) | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recurring file ingestion from object storage | A job script reads sources and writes targets | A LOAD pipeline finds new files and loads them into a table | This is the closest overlap. Check each source format against the six documented load formats. |
| Writing data to object storage | Scripts can write to targets | An EXPORT pipeline writes table or query results | Incremental output requires a timestamp or date key column. Without one, the full result is uploaded each run. |
| Transformation logic | Scripts process data in the ETL engine | Not stated in the Oracle pages consulted, beyond the load mechanics | Keep transformations in Glue, or move them into database code, and test the output values. |
| Scheduling | Scheduled jobs | Scheduled jobs with a documented default interval of 15 minutes | Confirm the cadence you need against the pipeline’s current attributes. |
| Event triggers | Event triggers are part of the capability set listed in this evaluation’s boundaries | Not stated in the Oracle pages consulted | Keep event wiring outside the pipeline unless a test shows an equivalent. |
| Workflow orchestration and dependencies | Workflow orchestration; the scheduler resolves dependencies | Not stated in the Oracle pages consulted | Jobs that depend on other jobs need an orchestration plan on the database side. |
| Metadata and catalog | Data Catalog databases, tables, and crawlers | Not stated in the Oracle pages consulted | Define target tables and their metadata in the database. |
| Connections and credentials | Data Catalog connections and IAM roles | Credentials are supplied when the pipeline is defined; GET_DEFINITION excludes secret values |
Re-create secrets and object-store access in the new environment. |
| Retries | The scheduler handles retries | Failed files are marked FAILED and retried on later scheduled runs |
Compare the unit of retry (job or file) and the retry count on both sides. |
| Monitoring | Run metrics and logging | Not stated in the Oracle pages consulted | Build equivalent alerts, then test what is actually observable when a file fails. |
File tracking and replay: the main migration risk
Oracle identifies load files by object-store filename. The overview states the consequences directly:
- Once a file has loaded, changing its content under the same name does not cause it to load again.
- Deleting the source object does not undo the database load.
- A file that fails is marked
FAILED, is retried automatically on later scheduled runs, and does not stop other files from loading.
These rules break a common Glue pattern. If the Glue job overwrites an object at the same key, the revised data will never reach the table through the pipeline. If the Glue job depends on replaying a file to reload it, the pipeline has no equivalent unless you design one.
Three design decisions follow from this:
- Naming. Writing each delivery under a new object name, such as one that includes a batch identifier, avoids the overwrite problem. This is an engineering pattern to test, not a behavior Oracle documents.
- Corrections. Deleting a source file does not roll back rows already loaded. Decide how a correction is applied to existing rows before cutover.
- Persistent failures. The overview describes automatic retries but not a retry limit. Test what happens when a file is permanently malformed, including how many retries occur and how you detect the
FAILEDstate.
Choosing the migration path
Oracle documents two different paths, and they have different semantics. Pick the one that matches the source.
| Path | Mechanism | What moves | Caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generic files from a non-Oracle source | Extract to CSV or another generic format, place the files in object storage, and create a LOAD pipeline. Oracle suggests one pipeline per table for large data sets. | The data contained in the files | Oracle presents this as a possible path. It does not convert Glue scripts or Glue configuration automatically. |
| Database-to-database import | DBMS_CLOUD_IMPORT, documented in the DBMS_CLOUD_IMPORT guide |
Data, with behavior that depends on the source type | When the source is a non-Oracle database, keys, indexes, constraints, and other dependent objects are not created automatically. |
For a file-based source, the documented sequence is:
- Extract each table or dataset to a generic format such as CSV.
- Place the files in the object-storage location the pipeline will watch.
- Create a LOAD pipeline for each table, and use one pipeline per table when the data sets are large.
- Run the pipeline once with
RUN_PIPELINE_ONCEbefore you start recurring execution.
General migration guidance is in the Oracle migration overview and the Oracle pipeline overview.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCredentials and redeployment
GET_DEFINITION returns executable PL/SQL that can recreate a pipeline, but it excludes secret values and other sensitive authentication material. Use it for configuration review and redeployment, and keep the credentials in a secure store that you control. A recreated pipeline will not work until its secrets are supplied again. Glue’s IAM roles and Data Catalog connections need a parallel review so that no access path is lost during cutover.
Best Value
A test plan to run before cutover
The following tests are what a team should run before it describes the replacement as complete. They are not results from a completed run.
- File arrival. Feed normal, late, duplicate, and corrected files, and confirm that each one loads or is skipped as the file-tracking rules predict.
- Filename behavior. Overwrite a file that has already loaded under the same name. Confirm it is not reloaded, and confirm the replay process your team will use.
- Failure isolation. Place a malformed file alongside a valid file. Confirm that the valid file loads, that the malformed file is marked
FAILED, and that it is retried on later scheduled runs. - Reconciliation. Compare source row counts with target row counts, and compare transformed values against the output of the Glue job.
- Permissions. Test object-store access, credentials, and network paths from the database side, including what happens when access is revoked.
- Lifecycle controls. Validate
STOP,START, andRESETbehavior, and confirm what state each leaves behind. - Monitoring. Confirm that a failed file produces a signal your operations team will see, and document where the signal appears.
- Runtime and cost. Measure both implementations on the same data volume and transformation requirements. Record the Glue version, worker configuration, database service shape, file sizes, transformations, and measurement method. Without those details, a timing comparison cannot be reproduced.
Where the evidence stops
- No completed migration of a Glue job is described in the sources. Treat this article as a mapping of documented behavior.
- No comparative runtime, cost, throughput, or reliability figures are established for either service. The 15-minute interval is a scheduling default, not a performance result.
- Oracle’s pipeline pages do not establish, in the material reviewed, which regions, service types, or release versions support every behavior described here. Confirm availability on the linked Oracle pages for your environment.
- Glue’s transformation engine, job versions, and worker options are not compared with the pipeline’s load mechanism in any published Oracle or AWS source reviewed here.
Where a documented behavior is important to your job, such as the filename rule or the full re-upload on EXPORT without a key column, confirm it in the linked Oracle pages before you rely on it.
