Replacement Phone Screen or Battery: A Repair Technician’s Pre-Purchase Checklist

Buy a replacement screen or battery only after you have identified the phone’s exact model and region, confirmed whether the repair needs a component or a complete assembly, and checked the part’s provenance, pairing requirements, tools, adhesive and safety implications. A listing that merely says “fits iPhone 12” or “Galaxy battery” is not enough evidence of compatibility.

The checklist below uses model-specific Apple and Samsung examples. Treat it as a purchasing and risk checklist, then follow the current repair guide for your exact device. It does not establish a universal price, failure rate or quality ranking for replacement parts.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Start with the exact device, not the product title

Phone families contain submodels and regional variants that can use different parts. Record the complete model designation before opening a marketplace listing.

Find the model in the phone itself

  • On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About and note the model name and model number. If the listing separates storage, generation or regional versions, keep those details with your notes.
  • On a Galaxy phone, use Settings > About phone and copy the model number, not just the commercial name.
  • Compare the information with the original box, invoice or carrier records if the phone will not boot.

Samsung says repairable parts can vary by country or region. Its parts information page is therefore a reminder to verify the regional variant before ordering. Do not treat a broad label such as “iPhone 12” or “Galaxy S20” as a complete compatibility specification.

Save evidence before you buy

Take a screenshot of the About screen and keep the listing’s stated model numbers, connector description and revision information. This gives you something concrete to compare if a seller later claims that a near-identical submodel is interchangeable.

Determine whether you need a component or an assembly

“Replacement screen” and “replacement battery” can describe either a single component or a larger preassembled unit. The difference changes the price, labor, tools, risk and parts that must be transferred from the old phone.

When a complete assembly is specified

The Galaxy S20+ example in the repair guide uses a screen, battery and frame assembly. A listing for only a bare display would not be the same job. Check whether the replacement includes the frame, adhesive, display electronics and any brackets shown in the guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When parts must move to the new display

The iPhone 12 Pro Max screen guide describes transferring a sensor assembly from the old display. A screen that lights up may still leave you without expected sensors or biometric functions if the required assembly is omitted or damaged during transfer. Read the component-transfer steps before choosing a cheaper “screen only” option.

Use the guide’s parts diagram as your buying list

Look for terms such as display assembly, screen and frame, bare panel, battery cell, pull-tab adhesive and replacement seal. Match each term to the exact part shown in the guide. If a listing does not state what is included, ask the seller rather than assuming that screws, brackets, sensors or adhesive are supplied.

Check what “OEM,” “genuine” and “tested” actually mean

These words are not interchangeable. “OEM” may describe a manufacturer relationship, “genuine” may mean a manufacturer-supplied part, and “tested” may describe only a seller’s inspection process. Require the seller to define the claim and identify the source of the part.

Listing language What to verify What you can safely conclude
Genuine or manufacturer part Who supplied it, which model and region it covers, and whether authentication or calibration is required Only the stated provenance; do not infer a performance guarantee
OEM Whether the term means original production, an equivalent specification or simply a marketing label Nothing beyond the seller’s documented definition
Aftermarket Capacity or display specification, test procedure, warranty and return conditions A clearly described non-manufacturer part, if the seller supplies that information
Tested What was tested, when, under which conditions and whether the test result is recorded Only the specific test claim, not an independent quality ranking

Apple states that “the parts used in repair can have significant impact on the safety, security, and performance of the device” in its Parts Support for iPhone. That is a reason to take provenance seriously, not proof that every non-manufacturer part will fail. Conversely, iFixit says in its battery FAQ that its batteries are not Apple OEM and separately describes its own specifications and testing. Attribute each statement to the supplier that made it.

Find out whether software warnings, pairing or calibration apply

A physically compatible part can still produce a message, lose a feature or require a software procedure. The answer depends on the phone model and operating-system version.

Battery genuineness messages on iPhone

The iPhone 13 battery guide notes that older iOS versions may show a battery-genuineness warning after replacement, including when original parts are used. It also says iOS 18 and newer can use Apple Repair Assistant to authenticate a new battery. Before ordering, check the iOS version currently installed and confirm which authentication path applies to that model.

Display calibration and transferred sensors

The iPhone 12 Pro Max screen guide describes a paired sensor assembly and an Apple calibration option for certain genuine displays. A repair that requires moving the old sensor assembly is different from installing a fully populated display. Ask the seller or technician whether the quoted part includes the paired component and whether calibration is available after installation.

Do not assume a warning means immediate hardware failure

A post-repair notification can indicate provenance or authentication status rather than a dead battery or display. Record the exact wording, operating-system version and affected function. Use the manufacturer’s current instructions for that model instead of deleting the message blindly or buying another part without diagnosis.

Add adhesive and tools to the real parts list

The part price is only one line in a repair budget. Opening a phone can consume seals, stretch-release adhesive and small fasteners, and a missing driver can stop the job halfway through.

The iPhone 14 battery guide lists replacement adhesive and tools including model-specific drivers, opening picks, tweezers and a spudger. Use that guide’s list as the authority for an iPhone 14 repair; it does not establish a universal kit for every phone.

Build the shopping list from the guide

  • Replacement screen, battery or assembly named for the exact model and region.
  • New adhesive or perimeter seal specified by the guide.
  • Every driver size and security bit listed, rather than a generic assumption that one screwdriver will work.
  • Opening picks, a spudger and tweezers where the guide calls for them.
  • A clean work surface, containers for screws and a way to track screw positions.

Buying a precision phone-repair tool kit can be sensible when it contains the exact drivers and opening tools required, but check the model guide first. No single kit is established here as complete for all iPhone or Galaxy repairs.

Stop immediately when the battery is swollen or damaged

Lithium-ion cells can ignite or enter a thermal event if punctured, crushed, bent or otherwise damaged. A swollen back cover, hissing cell, chemical odor, torn foil or battery that was pierced during removal is a stop condition, not a reason to continue carefully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Power down the phone if it is safe to do so, and move it away from heat and flammable materials.
  • Do not puncture, squeeze, recharge or tape over a damaged cell.
  • Do not resume the repair because a replacement battery is already on the way.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s service route. Samsung advises taking a damaged battery to a Samsung Service Centre in its battery precautions.

The iPhone screen guide and Galaxy S20+ guide also warn about fire or thermal-event risks from battery damage. If you cannot remove the cell without force, stop and use a qualified repair service.

Reset expectations about water resistance

Opening a phone disturbs factory seals. Adhesive reapplication may reduce the risk of liquid ingress, but it does not restore a certified factory condition automatically.

The iPhone 14 guide says the device will most likely lose its IP rating after the procedure. The Galaxy S20+ guide says water resistance depends on adhesive reapplication and that the device will lose its IP rating. Do not promise yourself or a customer factory water resistance after a screen or battery repair. Keep the repaired phone away from water even if the seal looks uniform.

Compare DIY with professional service on the factors that matter

Decision factor DIY repair Professional service
Compatibility You must verify the exact model, region and included components before ordering. The shop should confirm the model and source the matching part; get that confirmation in writing.
Component transfer You perform sensor, bracket or frame transfers described by the guide. The technician handles transfers and can identify a damaged paired component.
Tools and consumables You pay for drivers, picks, spudger, tweezers and adhesive in addition to the part. These are normally included in the service quote; ask what the quote covers.
Software steps You may need Repair Assistant, calibration or model-specific post-repair checks. Ask whether authentication, calibration and warning handling are included.
Safety You carry the risk of puncturing a cell or damaging cables and sensors. A trained technician has procedures for hazardous or stuck batteries.
Warranty and returns Coverage depends on the seller and may exclude installation damage; terms are not stated universally. Ask for a written labor and parts warranty, exclusions and return conditions.
Water resistance Plan for loss of the original IP rating after opening. Ask what seal is applied, but do not accept a promise of factory certification unless documented for that repair.

The available repair guides do not establish a universal price or prove that DIY is always cheaper. Compare the complete part, adhesive, tool, shipping, calibration and risk cost with a written service quote.

Use this purchase workflow

  1. Record the phone identity. Copy the model name, model number and region from Settings or the packaging.
  2. Open the exact repair guide. Confirm whether it calls for a component, a screen-and-frame assembly, a battery with adhesive or a transferred sensor.
  3. Interrogate the listing. Ask for the part’s source, included items, tested specification, compatible regions and revision details.
  4. Read post-repair requirements. Check the relevant iOS or Android version, authentication, calibration and expected notifications.
  5. Price the entire job. Add adhesive, every required tool, shipping and a replacement plan if the repair fails.
  6. Screen the safety risk. Reject a visibly swollen, leaking or previously punctured battery and choose service instead.
  7. Choose a service route. Proceed only if you can work safely and accept the loss of factory water-resistance certification; otherwise obtain a written professional quote.
  8. Keep documentation. Save the listing, invoice, warranty terms and model screenshots until the repair has passed all functional checks.

Questions to ask before handing over money or the phone

  • Does this part fit my complete model number and regional variant?
  • Is it a bare component or a complete assembly, and what must be transferred from my old part?
  • Who made or supplied it, and what exactly do “genuine,” “OEM” or “tested” mean in this listing?
  • Which adhesive, brackets, screws and tools are included?
  • Will the phone display a warning, require calibration or need a paired sensor after installation?
  • What are the parts and labor warranty periods, exclusions and return deadlines?
  • What happens if the old battery is swollen or cannot be removed safely?
  • Will the repair affect the phone’s IP rating, and is that limitation written into the service terms?

For the Galaxy S20+ example, the iFixit guide is dated May 24, 2024; other guides can be updated. Recheck the current manufacturer and repair documentation immediately before purchase, especially when the phone has received a newer operating-system release.
