Repairing an Old Phone vs. Buying Refurbished: Which Is Better?

Repairing an old phone vs buying a refurbished phone: which is better? It depends on the actual repair quote, the phone’s condition and performance, and how long it will keep receiving security updates. Repair is a better fit when the rest of the phone still meets your needs and the repairer offers clear terms. A refurbished replacement is more compelling when repairs are costly or the phone has broader age-related limits—if you can verify its battery, condition, warranty, return terms, and software support.

How to decide between repair and refurbished

There is no reliable universal price-percentage cutoff for this choice. Compare the specific repair and replacement options you can actually get, then weigh their expected usefulness and recourse.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Compare total costs. Get a quote for the exact model, fault, and location. Compare it with the delivered price of a refurbished phone that suits your needs, including any accessories or setup costs.
  2. Estimate useful life. Consider whether the old phone’s processor, storage, display, camera, and battery will remain adequate for the period you plan to keep it. A repair fixes a fault; it does not make an aging phone faster or expand its storage.
  3. Check security support. Look up the manufacturer’s update commitment for the exact model and region. If you plan to keep the phone for several years, a low repair bill may not be worthwhile if security updates are ending soon.
  4. Compare quality and coverage. Ask what parts a repairer will use and what the refurbished seller inspected, tested, or replaced. Compare the repair guarantee with the seller’s written warranty, return window, and your local legal rights.
  5. Account for downtime and data. A repair may leave you without the phone temporarily; switching devices requires backup, transfer, and setup. Include the practical cost of either route.

When repairing the old phone makes sense

Repair is worth considering when the problem is limited, the phone otherwise works well for you, and the repair quote is reasonable relative to a suitable replacement. A screen or battery issue may be a contained repair, but ask whether other components are also worn and whether fixing the fault will restore the performance you need.

Get a quote you can compare

Ask for a written quote that names the fault, parts, labor, turnaround time, warranty, and any diagnostic fee. Find out whether the repair could affect water resistance, whether the phone will be erased, and whether the repairer will preserve your data. Back up the phone before handing it over. If it may still be covered by a warranty or statutory guarantee, check that coverage before paying for an out-of-warranty repair.

DIY is a separate risk calculation

A smartphone repair tool kit may be useful for a repair you are qualified to do, but a kit does not make every repair safe or feasible. Check model compatibility and consider the risk of damaging the phone or affecting its water resistance. EU rules set tool-access requirements for specified replacement processes; they do not make every phone battery user-removable.

When a refurbished phone is the better fit

A refurbished phone may be the stronger option if the old device has several problems, no longer performs well enough, or is nearing the end of its security support. Savings can also let a buyer choose a higher-end model than they could afford new. But the label “refurbished” by itself does not establish battery health, repair quality, or how long the phone will last.

What buyers worry about

In a 2025 GSMA survey, 49% of surveyed consumers rated the possibility that a refurbished phone would break sooner than a new phone as a very important concern. The corresponding figures were 46% for worse-than-expected physical condition, 42% for cleanliness or hygiene, and 38% for a shorter warranty. Nearly half rated cost savings as a very important benefit, and 40% valued being able to buy a higher-end model than new because of the savings. These are survey responses, not predictions about a particular phone or seller. GSMA, 2025

Check the listing and terms before paying

  • Confirm the exact model, storage, and network/SIM compatibility.
  • Ask what inspection, restoration, and testing were performed; check whether parts are original or third-party.
  • Look for a battery replacement record or a clearly disclosed battery-health standard.
  • Check the cosmetic grade, included charger or cable, warranty duration and exclusions, and return window and costs.
  • Verify remaining manufacturer security-update support for the exact model and region.

What repair and refurbishment trends tell you—and what they do not

GSMA reported in 2025 that 64% of surveyed consumers globally had needed their current or previous phone repaired. Among those respondents, half reported needing a broken-screen repair and one-third a battery replacement. More than 60% of surveyed consumers who needed a repair proceeded with one. Of those who repaired, 63% used a repair shop, 16% a mobile operator, 14% the manufacturer, and 7% repaired the phone themselves. High repair cost was the biggest reported barrier. These figures describe survey respondents; they do not tell you what a particular repair will cost or whether it will pay off. GSMA, “Rethinking Mobile Phones” (2025)

Refurbished phones are an established alternative in some markets, but local figures should not be generalized globally. ADEME cited Arcep’s estimate that 6.9 million refurbished mobile phones were sold in France in 2023, representing 37% of the French mobile-phone market. ADEME, citing Arcep (2025)

Warranty and repair rights depend on where you live

European Union

The European Commission says the EU right-to-repair rules began applying on 31 July 2026. For products that are technically repairable under EU law, consumers can request repair, which must be free or offered at a reasonable price within a reasonable time. If a consumer chooses repair instead of replacement within the liability period, the legal guarantee is extended by at least 12 months. The Commission’s repair platform is expected to become operational in 2027; it is not yet available as of October 2026. The Commission estimated the rules would generate €4.8 billion in growth and investment in the EU; that is a policy estimate, not a promised consumer saving or a phone-repair price. EU consumer guidance describes a two-year legal guarantee for defects that existed at delivery and become apparent within two years, and says software updates should keep products with digital elements usable and cyber-secure. Your Europe: guarantees and returns

Separate EU ecodesign requirements for covered mobile phones and tablets include repairability and spare-part provisions. From 20 June 2025, specified replacement processes must meet tool-access criteria; certain battery designs can meet the rules through an alternative durability and water- and dust-resistance route. The scope depends on the product and model, so these requirements do not mean every phone battery must be user-removable. Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1670

United States

In the United States, written and implied warranty coverage can depend on the product terms and state law. Read the refurbished seller’s written terms and check state-specific consumer guidance rather than assuming one nationwide warranty applies to every refurbished phone.
