A repairability score is a summary of specified design, parts and information criteria—not a promise that a product will be cheap or easy to fix in every situation. France uses a 0–10 index for covered product categories; the EU uses a separate A–E class for smartphones and slate tablets. The two systems cannot be treated as interchangeable.
What does a repairability score mean?
It indicates how a product performs against the criteria in the scoring scheme that applies to it. The score is useful for comparing products within the same scheme and product category, but it is not a universal measure of repairability.

For the French index, a higher score on the 0–10 scale means the product is considered more repairable under that index. The French Ministry of Economy describes five criterion families: documentation; disassembly and access, including tools and fasteners; spare-parts availability; spare-parts price; and criteria specific to the product category. The EU smartphone and slate-tablet label uses a different scale: class A is the most repairable and class E the least. The European Commission says the relevant ecodesign and energy-labelling requirements apply to models placed on the EU market from 20 June 2025. What goes into each system?
France: a 0–10 index with category-specific criteria
The five French criterion families are applied through more detailed category rules. For laptops, the scoring order includes how quickly technical and consumer documentation is made available, the number of steps to access selected components, required tools and fasteners, parts availability and delivery, parts prices relative to a new product, and category-specific matters such as software updates and remote assistance. Current French government guidance lists laptops, electric lawn mowers, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners and high-pressure cleaners among the categories covered by the repairability index. Check the applicable category rules rather than assuming one product’s score is directly comparable with another’s.

EU: an A–E class for smartphones and slate tablets
Under the Commission supplier guideline, disassembly depth accounts for 25% of the EU class calculation; each of the other five parameters accounts for 15%. The class is one part of a broader energy label. A class should therefore not be read as a complete summary of every regulatory requirement or every durability attribute.

Is a higher repairability score better?
Within the same scheme and category, yes: a higher French score means better performance against that index’s criteria, while an A is higher than a B–E EU class. But do not compare a French number with an EU letter, or compare products scored under different category rules as if their results shared one scale.
For EU smartphones and tablets, the six parameters are weighted as specified in the Commission guideline. The French approach instead combines its five criterion families through category-specific scoring rules. That means a headline result is most meaningful when read alongside the underlying criteria and the scheme that produced it.

What does a repairability score not tell you?
A score does not, by itself, establish that a particular repair will be inexpensive, successful or convenient for a particular owner, or how long the whole product will last. Official scoring rules define inputs and requirements; they do not establish a quantified relationship between a score and real-world repair success, total repair cost or product lifespan.

- Parts: Is the specific component available, how long is delivery likely to take, and is it sold to consumers or only to repair professionals?
- Cost: What does that part cost, and what might labour or other required parts add?
- Repair process: Are instructions available, what tools are required, and can you or a local repairer do the work?
- Software support: For a phone, tablet or computer, how long are updates expected to continue?
- Other ownership factors: What do reliability or durability information, warranty coverage and local repair options say?
These are related purchase and ownership questions, but they are not all necessarily included in one repairability score. A high score does not guarantee long life or a cheap repair; a low score does not mean repair is impossible.
How do I check a product’s repairability score?
For products using the French index
- Confirm that the product category is covered and identify the applicable French index or, where relevant, another label. French government guidance says televisions and washing machines moved from the repairability index to a durability index from 2025; that index includes additional factors, notably reliability. - Find the score and its detailed breakdown on the product page or ask the seller. For online purchases, the score is shown near the price and the detail is accessible from the same page. Sellers must make the detail available; manufacturers or importers must provide it free of charge within 15 days of a request.
- Read the category-specific criteria and the individual results, not just the total or color. For a laptop, for example, check component-access steps, tools, fasteners, parts supply and pricing, and the relevant category-specific factors.
For an EU-labelled smartphone or slate tablet
- Scan the QR code on the energy label or search the model in the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL). The Commission’s EPREL overview explains how the database provides model information. European Commission: EPREL
- Inspect the A–E repairability class and, where model details are available, the six parameter results. EPREL records can also link to repair instructions, parts costs or dismantling information for some product groups.
- Check the particular component, its parts supply and price, repair instructions, tools and software-update duration. Consider the label’s separate reliability and durability information as well as your warranty and local repair options.
How to compare two products usefully
First match the country or regulatory scheme and product category. Then compare the details that matter to the likely repair—not just the displayed total.
