It lists events including fire, theft, storm and flood, but important limits and waiting periods apply. Belongings away from home generally need optional Portable Contents cover, and temporary accommodation is subject to policy terms.
What The Capricornian Home Contents Standard covers
The Capricornian distributes the policy under the CGU brand; Insurance Australia Limited is the issuer. The cover is for the renter’s contents. It does not insure the landlord’s building, and landlord-owned fixtures or items should not be counted as your possessions when setting the sum insured. The insurer’s Key Facts Sheet lists events including fire and explosion, flood or rainwater run-off, storm, lightning, earthquake, theft or attempted theft, malicious damage, impact, escape of liquid, and accidental breakage of specified glass. Listed events are subject to the policy’s exclusions, conditions and limits; the sheet is a guide, not the insurance contract. Read the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), certificate and any applicable supplementary documents before deciding whether a particular loss is covered. Examples of important exclusions and conditions
- The Key Facts Sheet says theft by the insured or people who normally live in the home is not covered.
- If liquid escapes from an item, the cost of repairing the item it escaped from is not covered, according to the sheet.
- Actions of the sea are not covered unless caused by storm surge.
These are examples, not a complete list of exclusions. The PDS and your certificate govern the cover for your policy.

Are belongings covered outside the home?
Contents are generally covered inside the home. Cover for eligible belongings away from home requires optional Portable Contents cover, and conditions and limits apply. If you regularly take a laptop, camera, jewellery or other valuable item out, check whether the item and the situations in which you use it meet the optional cover’s terms. Do not assume that standard contents cover follows every possession wherever you go.
Standard and Plus: the main differences
The Capricornian describes two contents options. Its product page says Contents Plus includes accidental damage and motor burnout, while those benefits are optional under the product range. It also gives different maximum temporary accommodation periods for the two options. These are stated maximums, not guarantees that every claim will qualify.

The insurer’s product page describes Contents Standard and Contents Plus; confirm the wording applying to your specific quote in the PDS, certificate and relevant supplementary documents.

The insurer says a tenant with contents insurance may receive reasonable extra rent costs for temporary accommodation if a covered event leaves the home unliveable. Its product page states maximum periods of up to 12 months for Standard and up to two years for Plus. Payment depends on the event being covered and the applicable policy terms, limits and exclusions; it is not an unconditional promise to pay rent whenever you have to leave home.

Limits, waiting periods and excesses to check
The 2025 Key Facts Sheet gives several figures that can materially affect a claim:

These figures come from the Key Facts Sheet prepared 24 February 2025, which warns it is not a contract. Check the current policy wording and certificate for the terms that apply. Also compare the excess shown on your quote: the amount you must contribute to a claim affects what a payout is worth to you.

How to choose a contents sum insured
Set the sum insured using the cost of replacing your possessions, rather than what you originally paid or what you could sell them for second-hand. The insurer’s Key Facts Sheet recommends listing possessions and estimating their replacement cost. The maximum payout is limited to the sum insured, subject to policy terms, and category sub-limits can still restrict payment for particular belongings.

- Estimate what it would cost to replace each item with an equivalent new item, and total those amounts.
- Check whether valuable items, jewellery, watches or work tools exceed the relevant category limits; investigate applicable optional cover or specified-item requirements in the current documents.
- Compare the total with the sum insured and quote, and review the amount if you acquire or dispose of substantial belongings.
How to judge whether the policy suits your rental
There is no verified current premium here, so the available evidence does not establish whether the policy is cheap or good value. For a useful comparison, obtain quotes for the same address, contents sum insured and circumstances, then line up the details that change protection and out-of-pocket costs:
- Standard versus Plus, including which benefits are built in and which require an option.
- Portable Contents and valuable-contents terms for possessions you take away or that exceed category limits.
- Contents sum insured, category sub-limits and the excess.
- Waiting periods and the temporary accommodation conditions.
The right choice depends on the possessions you need to replace, the limits and options relevant to you, and the actual quote—not the option name alone.
