Renee Good’s family filed two civil lawsuits on October 1, 2026, over her fatal shooting by an ICE agent in south Minneapolis on January 7. One suit names the United States and alleges wrongful death under Minnesota law; the other names the agent and federal officials and alleges a conspiracy to interfere with civil rights. The claims are allegations, not court findings.
What happened to Renee Good?
Good was killed during a federal immigration enforcement operation in south Minneapolis. The family’s lawsuits concern the January 7, 2026 shooting by ICE agent Jonathan Ross. Reporting identifies Good’s partner, Becca Good, and her brother, Brent Ganger, as family representatives associated with the filings. Becca Good said, “She was the love of my life,” according to the Associated Press.
Accounts of the shooting are disputed. The Associated Press described bystander video as showing Good’s vehicle turning away from an officer as he fired. Federal officials characterized the shooting as self-defense; video and witness accounts described in local reporting disputed aspects of the official account. Those descriptions do not resolve what happened, and the sources available for the filing-day coverage establish no court finding on the shooting.

Both cases seek legal accountability through different routes: the first asserts state-law claims against the United States, while the second alleges civil-rights wrongdoing by named individuals. The reporting reviewed does not establish a specific damages amount or a court-ordered remedy. The plaintiffs’ assertions remain allegations unless and until established through legal proceedings.

What does the Ku Klux Klan Act have to do with the case?
The second complaint invokes the 1871 federal civil-rights law commonly known as the Ku Klux Klan Act. In this case, the family alleges that Ross and federal officials conspired to interfere with civil rights. The name of the law does not establish that a violation occurred; the allegation must be tested in court. Filing-day coverage characterized this kind of claim as legally difficult. University of St. Thomas law professor Rachel Moran told the Associated Press, “They’re going to face significant uphill battles,” adding that the cases are complicated and that she could not predict their outcome.
Has a court ruled, and what have officials said?
The filing-day reports describe the suits as newly filed and provide no later ruling. The U.S. Department of Justice told MPR News it declined to comment on pending litigation or investigations. MPR and CBS reported that the Department of Homeland Security had not immediately responded to their requests for comment. Those were the responses reported at the time of publication; they do not establish what any defendant has said since.

The lawsuits are separate from a Minnesota case filed on March 24, 2026. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, State of Minnesota, and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension sued for access to evidence concerning the shootings of Good, Julio Sosa-Celis, and Alex Pretti. That case concerns access to evidence and is not one of the family’s two suits.
