Rename Your Windows 11 PC: Three Built-In Methods

Windows 11 gives you three practical ways to change the computer name: the Settings app, the legacy System Properties dialog, and PowerShell. Use Settings for a normal home or personal computer, System Properties when you need its familiar older interface, and PowerShell when you want a repeatable command or are administering several machines. Domain-joined computers require additional permissions and procedures.

The rename itself is straightforward, but Windows applies naming rules and commonly needs a restart before the new name is active. The steps below use Microsoft’s documented paths and distinguish consumer PCs from managed domain systems.

Which Windows 11 renaming method should you use?

Method Best for Difficulty Important qualification
Settings Most home and personal PCs Easy Microsoft’s current Windows 11 consumer procedure
System Properties People who prefer the classic Windows dialog Easy to moderate Legacy interface; its exact presentation and availability can vary
PowerShell Command-line users, scripts and administrators Moderate Requires a valid name and appropriate rights; domain computers may need explicit credentials
netdom administration Domain workstations and member servers Advanced Requires AD DS tools or RSAT and an elevated prompt; do not use the rename command on a domain controller

For a personal laptop or desktop, start with Settings. PowerShell is useful when a technician needs a consistent command, while the domain tools belong in an organization’s established IT process.

Check the new name before changing anything

Windows computer names follow technical rules documented in Microsoft’s Rename-Computer reference. A standard name can contain letters, numbers and hyphens. It cannot contain spaces or periods, cannot consist entirely of digits, and cannot be longer than 63 characters. For example, DESK-27 is valid, while Office PC, 1921681 and a name exceeding 63 characters are not.

Choose a name that helps you identify the device without exposing information you would rather not advertise. Microsoft lists distinguishing multiple devices, reducing clues in generic default names and following an organization-wide naming convention as reasons to rename a Windows device. That is limited obscurity and organization, not a security control: changing the name does not replace strong authentication, updates or access restrictions.

Save open work before selecting a restart option. Windows may show the new name in some places only after the computer restarts, and a restart is commonly required for the change to take effect.

Method 1: Rename the PC in Settings

This is the clearest method for most Windows 11 users and the one Microsoft Support documents for current consumer editions. The full path is Settings > System > About > Rename this PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings. You can select it from the Start menu or press Windows+I.
  2. Select System in the left sidebar, then select About.
  3. In the device information area, select Rename this PC.
  4. Type the new name. Apply the character, all-digit and 63-character rules described above, then select Next.
  5. Windows asks when to restart. Select Restart now if your work is saved, or Restart later if you need to keep working. Microsoft’s support instructions use those exact choices in Rename Your Windows Device.

If you choose to restart later, plan a restart before relying on the new name. Close applications first because the restart ends the current session.

What to expect from Settings

The dialog validates the name before accepting it. A rejected entry normally means the text violates the allowed format or your account lacks permission to make the change. Correct the name first; if the issue is permission-related on a work-managed computer, use your organization’s IT process rather than trying to bypass its policy.

Method 2: Use the legacy System Properties dialog

System Properties is an older Windows interface that still exists on many installations. It can be convenient if you already know the classic Computer Name controls, but Microsoft’s current consumer support page does not provide a complete Windows 11 walkthrough for this route. The exact labels or availability may therefore differ between editions, updates and managed devices.

  1. Open the Run dialog with Windows+R.
  2. Enter sysdm.cpl and press Enter to open System Properties.
  3. Select the Computer Name tab.
  4. Use the dialog’s control for changing the computer name. Enter a name that meets the Windows rules, confirm the change, and accept any prompts Windows displays.
  5. Restart when prompted, or restart later after saving your work.

On some systems, the control may be labelled Change and may appear beside the current computer name and workgroup or domain information. Do not assume that every Windows 11 device presents those controls identically. A company’s policy can hide the option or require administrator approval, particularly when the computer is connected to a domain.

Use Settings instead if you simply need the supported, easy-to-follow consumer path. System Properties is best treated as a compatibility and familiarity option, not as a separate capability.

Method 3: Rename the PC with PowerShell

PowerShell provides a built-in Rename-Computer cmdlet. It is useful when you prefer a command line, need to document the exact operation or want to repeat the action on multiple local machines.

Basic local rename

  1. Open PowerShell from Start. If Windows reports that the operation is not permitted, reopen it with the rights required by your account or contact the person who manages the PC.
  2. Run the following command, replacing NewName with your chosen computer name:

Rename-Computer -NewName "NewName"

  1. Read the result and restart Windows so the rename can be applied. If you want the cmdlet to request the restart itself, use:

Rename-Computer -NewName "NewName" -Restart

The cmdlet follows the same naming restrictions: letters, numbers and hyphens are allowed; spaces, periods, all-digit names and names over 63 characters are not. The -Restart switch controls the restart request; it does not remove the need to save open work first.

Credentials and domain membership

Microsoft’s cmdlet documentation notes that an explicit domain credential is required when renaming a domain-joined computer. In practice, that means a work-managed PC may reject a command that succeeds on a personal machine even when the syntax is correct. Follow your organization’s procedure for obtaining authorized credentials and scheduling the restart; do not place passwords in scripts or share them in chat.

For the cmdlet’s complete parameter behavior and credential requirements, see Microsoft’s PowerShell reference for Rename-Computer.

When the computer is joined to a Windows domain

Renaming a domain workstation or member server is an administrative change, not an ordinary home-PC task. Microsoft documents netdom renamecomputer for that scenario when the Active Directory Domain Services role or the Remote Server Administration Tools that provide the required commands are available. The command must be run from an elevated Command Prompt and supports domain credentials.

Coordinate the change with whoever manages the directory, naming policy and restart window. A domain rename can affect inventory, scripts, management rules or other references that depend on the old name, so the correct process is the one established by your organization rather than a one-off experiment.

Do not use netdom renamecomputer on an AD DS domain controller. Microsoft warns that doing so can impair the domain controller’s function. Domain controllers use the dedicated netdom computername procedure instead. See Microsoft Learn’s netdom renamecomputer documentation for the supported scope, elevation requirement and warning.

Restarting and confirming the result

Settings offers Restart now and Restart later; PowerShell offers the optional -Restart switch; System Properties normally prompts for a restart. Whichever interface you use, save files before rebooting and complete the restart before troubleshooting a name that still appears unchanged.

  1. After Windows starts again, open Settings > System > About.
  2. Check the device name shown in the About page.
  3. If you used PowerShell, review whether the command returned an error before restarting. A syntax or validation error means Windows did not accept the requested name.

Some connected services or management consoles may take their own time to display a renamed device. On a managed computer, allow the organization’s inventory and policy systems to update, and ask IT if the old name remains after a successful restart.

Troubleshooting common failures

“The name is invalid”

Remove spaces and periods, use at least one letter or hyphen rather than an all-digit value, and keep the total length at 63 characters or fewer. Avoid copying punctuation from a label or sentence into the name.

The rename button or command is blocked

A standard account may not have the required rights, and domain policy can restrict computer-name changes. Sign in with an authorized account or use the organization’s support process. Repeatedly trying different interfaces will not override a policy restriction.

The old name is still shown

Confirm that the computer actually restarted after the change. Then check the name in Settings > System > About. If that page shows the new name but another administrative tool does not, the other system may not yet have refreshed its inventory; managed-device owners should ask their administrator how often it updates.

A domain computer cannot be renamed with the local method

Do not treat a domain-joined machine like a standalone home PC. The PowerShell cmdlet may require explicit domain credentials, while netdom renamecomputer requires the appropriate directory tools and an elevated prompt. Stop and involve the domain administrator if you are unsure whether the computer is a workstation, member server or domain controller.

The practical choice

Use Settings > System > About > Rename this PC for nearly every personal Windows 11 computer. Choose System Properties only when its legacy controls are available and familiar. Choose PowerShell when repeatability or administration matters, and reserve netdom procedures for authorized domain workstations and member servers—not domain controllers.
