Removing rats and restoring native plants could help atolls withstand rising seas

Yes, under the right ecological and climate conditions. A 2026 Lancaster University study finds that removing invasive rats, restoring native vegetation and rebuilding seabird-linked reef processes can increase an atoll’s ability to produce sediment, resist erosion and keep land above rising seas. The result is a modeled nature-based option, not a guarantee or a universal substitute for coastal defenses.

What the 2026 study measured

Researchers combined ecological observations from 28 atoll islands in the Seychelles, the Chagos Archipelago and Tetiaroa in French Polynesia. They connected four parts of the island–reef system: seabird nutrient inputs, coral-reef growth and calcification, reef sediment production, and the structure of plant roots that hold island soils together.

The central finding is that rats can disrupt several of these processes at once. By eating seabird eggs and chicks, and consuming native seeds, shoots and flowers, invasive rats suppress both the animals that fertilize reefs and the vegetation that stabilizes land.

Measured differences around seabird-populated islands

Measure Finding reported by Lancaster University in 2026 Why it matters
Lagoonal-reef growth 1.8 times higher around rat-free, seabird-populated islands than around rat-infested islands More reef framework can reduce wave energy and supply carbonate material
Ocean-facing-reef growth 2.5 times higher around rat-free, seabird-populated islands Stronger seaward reefs can contribute to shoreline protection and sediment generation
Sediment-production potential 2.3 to 2.8 times higher around seabird-populated islands Additional sand and gravel can help beaches and island surfaces rebuild
Modeled sediment difference About 170 cubic metres (6,000 cubic feet) more sediment per year around the reefs of an island of roughly 14 hectares (35 acres) An illustration of annual production, not a measurement for every atoll
Fine-root length 4.6 times higher where native vegetation was abundant than where little native vegetation grew Denser roots bind sediment and reduce its loss during storms

How rat removal links seabirds, reefs and land

  1. Eradication removes a direct pressure. Rats no longer eat eggs, chicks, seeds and new shoots, allowing seabird colonies and native plants to recover.
  2. Seabirds move nutrients from sea to land. Birds feed offshore and return nutrients in their droppings. Runoff and groundwater then carry part of that nutrient supply back toward coastal waters and reefs.
  3. Nutrients support reef growth. In the study’s interpretation, nutrient-enhanced reefs showed faster coral growth and calcification. Reef communities also support sediment-producing animals such as parrotfish.
  4. Reefs make more building material. Coral skeletons and the carbonate fragments produced by reef organisms become sand and gravel that can be deposited on beaches and island surfaces.
  5. Native plants hold the island together. Many native species have longer, denser fine roots than coconut palms. Those roots reinforce soil and help limit erosion when waves, rainfall and storm surge move sediment.
  6. The functions reinforce one another. A growing reef can absorb more wave energy, a larger sediment supply can maintain land, and stable soils allow vegetation to persist. The benefit comes from the connected system rather than from a single intervention.

Could these atolls keep pace with sea-level rise?

The Lancaster team modeled future conditions rather than observing the end of the century. Its release says rat-free, seabird-populated lagoonal reefs could closely keep pace with projected sea-level rise through 2100 under a scenario in which warming is limited to 2°C. Reefs without seabirds had limited modeled ability to keep up.

That result depends on local reef condition, island shape, sediment pathways, storm exposure and the emissions pathway used in the model. It should therefore be read as evidence that restoration can improve the odds of adaptation, not as a promise that every low island will remain habitable.

“Atoll islands are not static; they are naturally active systems that can change and adapt to their environmental conditions if they are allowed to do so.”

What happens to native plants after rats are eradicated?

Recovery starts with the removal of seed predators and herbivores, but the plant community that returns depends on which species remain, whether invasive plants have taken hold, and whether people replant locally appropriate natives. Replacing abandoned coconut plantations with natural vegetation can increase root structure and habitat diversity, while retaining a mixed plant community provides food and nesting places for wildlife.

“Replacing old, abandoned coconut palm tree plantations with natural vegetation, and restoring seabird populations by eradicating invasive rats, could be key to the survival of these tiny low-lying islands.”

Evidence from restoration projects

Midway Atoll

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says Midway Atoll was declared rat-free in 1996. After eradication, native naupaka recovered and seabird populations rebounded. The agency explains that rats had eaten plants and seeds and helped invasive plants spread, showing why vegetation recovery may require more than simply killing rodents.

Palmyra Atoll

At Palmyra, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service describes rat removal as the first step in a wider restoration program. It reports visible increases in seedlings and animals after removal and expects long-term increases in plant and animal density and diversity to improve atoll resilience.

“We believe removing all the rats will increase the density and diversity of plant and animals at Palmyra in the long term, and thereby the resilience of the atoll.”

In the Cook Islands, the Te Ipukarea Society reports that long-term rat control helped the kākerōri recover from 29 birds to more than 500. That recovery is a regional conservation example, not a measurement from the Lancaster study.

Restoration compared with hard coastal engineering

Consideration Island restoration Seawalls and other hard defenses
Ecological effects Can restore seabirds, native plants, reefs, sediment production and soil structure together; poorly planned eradication can still harm non-target species. Can protect a defined shoreline but may alter wave reflection, sediment movement and coastal habitat.
Maintenance and cost Requires eradication planning, follow-up monitoring, biosecurity and continued ecological management. The study provides no universal cost figure. Requires design, construction and maintenance; costs vary with location, materials and exposure.
Feasibility Most practical on uninhabited or sparsely populated islands when access, quarantine and community support can be organized. Can be difficult and expensive to build on remote atolls and may protect only the engineered section.
Speed of benefits Seedling and wildlife responses can appear after rat removal, while reef growth and sediment accumulation depend on sustained biological processes. May provide localized physical protection soon after construction, subject to permitting and construction conditions.
System coverage Addresses reef growth, sediment supply, vegetation and soil stability as linked processes. Usually addresses shoreline exposure directly rather than rebuilding the whole island–reef system.

Professor Yadvinder Malhi of the University of Oxford summarized the ecological logic this way:

“Restoring and boosting the wildness of these islands through seabirds and native vegetation helps these islands to adapt to global change.”

— Professor Yadvinder Malhi, University of Oxford

Limits and requirements for real projects

  • Local ecology matters. Native-plant choices, seabird species, reef condition and groundwater behavior differ among atolls; a species or method suitable in one place may be wrong in another.
  • Eradication is not a one-day operation. Teams need planning, bait or trapping protocols appropriate to the island, verification that rats are gone, long-term monitoring and strict biosecurity to prevent reinvasion.
  • People must be involved. On inhabited or regularly visited islands, residents, land managers and local authorities need to shape access rules, waste management, quarantine and restoration goals.
  • Benefits are cumulative. A rat-free island does not instantly have a mature reef or stable sediment budget. Coral growth, soil development and vegetation succession require time and protection from renewed disturbance.
  • Restoration is not a universal replacement for defenses. Populated shorelines facing immediate hazards may still need carefully designed engineering alongside ecological measures.

“Our results show new evidence that island restoration is not only beneficial to biodiversity conservation but can enhance the resilience of low-lying atoll islands in the face of sea-level rise, particularly where costly engineering solutions are unfeasible or inappropriate.”

— Dr. Jennifer Appoo, University of the Seychelles

The practical implication is a sequence: assess the island and reef, prevent rat reinvasion, restore locally appropriate vegetation, protect recovering seabird colonies, and measure changes in reef growth, sediment supply and shoreline elevation. Used this way, restoration is a risk-reduction strategy that works with the atoll’s own feedbacks rather than relying on a single barrier.
