RemoveMacAI is an unofficial, open-source command-line tool for Apple-silicon Macs running macOS 27. According to its README, it turns off Apple Intelligence features, removes the downloaded models through Apple’s asset service, and blocks them from downloading again. The project says all of this can be reverted. How much space you get back is not guaranteed, though, and what you lose while it is applied is real. It is not an Apple tool, and Apple does not endorse it.
This article keeps three kinds of evidence separate: the project’s own claims, Apple’s published requirements, and press coverage. It is based on those published materials and not on hands-on testing of the tool.

What RemoveMacAI is
RemoveMacAI is a GitHub project by Om Lahore. Its description reads: “Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and remove its downloaded models.” The README says macOS 27 no longer has a single Apple Intelligence switch, so the tool works in three steps:
- It turns off the individual features.
- It removes the models using Apple’s asset service.
- It blocks new model downloads through an approved configuration profile, redirecting them to a closed local port.
These are the project’s claims about its own implementation, not independently verified findings. The README also says: “System Integrity Protection stays enabled and no files under /System are modified directly.”

Requirements and support
- Apple silicon is required.
- macOS 27 is supported. macOS 26 and earlier are not.
- The README says it was tested on 27.0, and that macOS 27.0.1 needs RemoveMacAI 0.2.3 or later.
Support for specific macOS releases can change quickly, so check the repository’s current README and release notes before running anything.
How much space can you get back?
Apple’s support page for the 27.0 releases says Apple Intelligence may require up to 14 GB on Macs with M3 or later and at least 12 GB of unified memory, and up to 8 GB on other Apple Intelligence-enabled Macs (Apple, 2026). Those are requirement ceilings. They are not measurements of what RemoveMacAI recovers, and your Mac may reclaim less.
No independent benchmark of recovered storage was found. Treat any universal “12 GB+” figure as the project’s promise, not a verified result.

The README also warns that Storage settings may keep counting Apple Intelligence space after the models are removed, because macOS deletes the underlying files on its own schedule. The number in System Settings may not drop right away.
What stops working
According to the README, the tool turns off:
- Siri, including “Hey Siri” and its menu bar icon
- Writing Tools
- Genmoji and Image Playground
- The ChatGPT extension
- Summaries in Mail, Messages, Safari, Notes and notifications
- Mail smart replies and inline text predictions
- Spatial Photos and Photos Clean Up
- Xcode predictive code completion
It removes the foundation models, plus the models for image generation and Genmoji, Spatial Photos, Photos Clean Up and Xcode code completion.
Software that relies on those models is affected too. The README lists apps using Apple’s Foundation Models framework, the Use Model action in Shortcuts, Visual Intelligence, and natural-language editing in Calendar. If a third-party app you depend on uses Apple’s on-device models, check it first.

Dictation is the stated exception: “Dictation is a separate setting, and its speech models are not removed.”
Apple’s Mac guide says many Apple Intelligence models run on device while more complex requests can use Private Cloud Compute, and that availability varies by language and region. Removing local models should not be read as removing every Apple cloud-based capability.
Can you get the models back?
The README says “All changes can be reverted.” Removing the configuration profile restores prior settings, and macOS can download the models again when a feature needs them. So the storage gain lasts only while the changes are applied, and undoing it means re-downloading the models.

The README also describes options to inspect status and model sizes, run a dry run, and keep selected features enabled. Use status and dry run first to see what would be affected on your own Mac.

This is third-party software that installs a configuration profile and works through system services. The repository says its browser-downloaded binary is ad-hoc signed but not notarized, and it documents checksum verification and a Homebrew route. Understand what any command does before you run it, and verify the checksum if you download the binary directly.

He also cautions that it relies on configuration profiles, restriction keys and system services Apple could change, and that future effects on macOS and third-party apps are unknown. That is uncertainty, not a prediction of breakage, but it is a reason to recheck the project after macOS updates.

Apple’s general storage guidance
On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open System Settings > General > Storage. Apple describes System Data as a general category for Apple and third-party files without a more specific category. Its suggestions include moving files to an external drive, deleting media or Downloads items, removing unused apps, and emptying the Trash. These help with general disk pressure but do not delete Apple Intelligence model assets. An external SSD suits personal files such as photos and video; it has no effect on the models.
Who should consider it
- Reasonable candidate: you never use Siri, Writing Tools, summaries or Image Playground, you are short on space, and you are comfortable with a third-party profile on your Mac.
- Poor candidate: you rely on Siri or Shortcuts model actions, use Xcode predictive completion, or run apps built on the Foundation Models framework.
- Try first: if the real problem is a full disk, clear or move large files first, since that may free more than the models would.
The Bottom Line
RemoveMacAI is a reasonable option if you truly don’t use Apple Intelligence and want that storage back. Run the status and dry-run options first, verify what you download, and expect possibly less than Apple’s ceilings. If you depend on Siri, Shortcuts model actions or Xcode completion, or the space isn’t pressing, leave the models in place.
