On supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 editions, enable the optional Custom Logon feature and set HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindows EmbeddedEmbeddedLogonBrandingNeutral to the REG_DWORD value 8. This hides the Ease of Access button on the Welcome (logon) screen and the Ctrl+Alt+Del screen. The same setting can remove the Accessibility option from an Assigned Access lock screen.
What this setting changes
Windows exposes accessibility controls before sign-in through the Ease of Access button. Microsoft’s Custom Logon feature can suppress that particular interface element. The registry value is a bitmask: decimal 8 (hexadecimal 0x8) corresponds specifically to disabling the Ease of Access button.

The change affects the normal Windows Welcome/logon screen and the security screen shown after pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del. Microsoft also documents the same registry entry for removing the Accessibility option from Assigned Access lock screens. It does not disable accessibility tools inside a signed-in session, and it does not alter Winlogon’s credential-processing behavior.
Check edition and prerequisites first
Custom Logon is an optional Windows component, not a general registry switch available on every edition. Microsoft lists support for Windows 10 and Windows 11 Enterprise, IoT Enterprise, and Education editions. It is not listed for Home or Pro.

- You need an administrator account to enable the feature and write under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. - Custom Logon must be enabled before the registry setting can take effect.
- Record the existing registry value, if present, so you can restore the prior configuration.
- Plan a restart or sign-out after the change. The exact activation point can depend on the deployment, so verify the result on the target device.
Enable the Custom Logon feature
Choose either the graphical Windows Features dialog or DISM. Both enable the same optional component.
Using Turn Windows features on or off
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Open Turn Windows features on or off. You can search for that phrase from the Start menu.
- Expand Device Lockdown.
- Select Custom Logon.
- Select OK and allow Windows to apply the feature. Restart if Windows requests it.
If Device Lockdown or Custom Logon is not present, check the Windows edition. The component is documented for Enterprise, IoT Enterprise, and Education, not Home or Pro.
Using DISM from an elevated command prompt
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
dism /online /enable-feature /featureName:Client-EmbeddedLogonWait for DISM to finish and act on any restart request before continuing. If DISM reports that the feature is unknown or unavailable, confirm that the device is running a supported edition and that the command prompt is elevated.

Set BrandingNeutral to 8
After Custom Logon is enabled, configure the value in Registry Editor.
- Press the Windows key, type Registry Editor, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindows EmbeddedEmbeddedLogon. In the Registry Editor address bar, you can pasteHKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindows EmbeddedEmbeddedLogonand press Enter. - Locate the
BrandingNeutralvalue and confirm that its type isREG_DWORD. - Open the value, select Decimal, and enter
8. The equivalent hexadecimal entry is0x8; do not enter both as separate values. - Close Registry Editor.
If BrandingNeutral is not listed, create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with that exact name, then set its data to decimal 8. A spelling difference or a value placed under another registry path will not control the logon screen.

reg add "HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindows EmbeddedEmbeddedLogon" /v BrandingNeutral /t REG_DWORD /d 8 /fUse the command only on supported editions with Custom Logon enabled. The /f switch overwrites an existing value without prompting, so preserve the previous data before running it if rollback matters.

Restart and verify every affected screen
Restart the device, or sign out when that is appropriate for the deployment, then check the result rather than assuming the registry write was enough.
- At the Windows Welcome screen, confirm that the Ease of Access icon is absent.
- Sign in, press
Ctrl+Alt+Del, and confirm that the corresponding Ease of Access option is also hidden there. - If the device uses Assigned Access, lock it and inspect the Assigned Access lock screen as well; Microsoft documents the same value for that surface.
- Sign in again and test the normal user session. The pre-sign-in button should be gone without changing the credentials users enter.
The restart/sign-out step is an operational safeguard: it gives the logon components a clean opportunity to reload the configuration. If the button remains, work through the troubleshooting section instead of repeatedly changing unrelated registry values.

Understand the other BrandingNeutral values
Value 8 hides only the Ease of Access control. It is not a command to remove every button from the logon interface. Microsoft assigns separate bit values to other elements.

Because these are bit values, a deployment that needs multiple elements hidden combines the required bits. For example, 8 is the value for Ease of Access alone; do not substitute another number unless you intentionally want another combination. Document the chosen value so a later administrator can distinguish an intentional combination from an error.

Assigned Access is designed to constrain a device to a controlled experience, but Microsoft notes that Assigned Access itself does not change accessibility settings. If the requirement is specifically to remove the accessibility option from the lock screen of a kiosk, Custom Logon supplies the documented control.
Enable Custom Logon on the supported Windows edition, set the same BrandingNeutral REG_DWORD to 8, then lock the device and verify the Assigned Access lock screen. Test the complete kiosk lifecycle, including boot, lock, unlock, sign-out, and recovery by an administrator. Hiding a pre-sign-in control should be a deliberate accessibility and support decision, not an accidental side effect of kiosk lockdown.
Troubleshoot a button that is still visible
The feature cannot be found
Check Settings > System > About or the organization’s inventory record to confirm the edition. Home and Pro are not listed for Custom Logon. On a supported edition, verify that Custom Logon is selected under Device Lockdown, or rerun the elevated DISM command and read its completion message.
The registry value has no effect
- Confirm the path is exactly
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindows EmbeddedEmbeddedLogon, not a similarly named key elsewhere. - Confirm the value name is exactly
BrandingNeutraland the type isREG_DWORD. - Check the data using the intended base: decimal 8 and hexadecimal
0x8are equivalent. - Make sure Custom Logon was enabled before testing.
- Restart or sign out, then inspect both the Welcome screen and Ctrl+Alt+Del screen.
A different button disappeared
Review the number stored in BrandingNeutral. Values 2, 4, and 16 correspond to Power, Language, and Switch user respectively. A value copied from another deployment may intentionally combine several bits.
You need to restore the control
Restore the prior BrandingNeutral data if you recorded it. If the goal is to stop suppressing these controls and no other branding bits are required, clear the configured bit or remove the value, then restart and verify. On a managed kiosk, also check whether the deployment has reapplied the setting.
Operational and accessibility considerations
The setting changes visible logon-screen UI; it does not change how Windows validates credentials. However, removing the pre-sign-in accessibility entry point can prevent a person from launching those tools before authentication. Before applying it broadly, identify how users who need accessibility assistance will obtain it, and keep an administrator recovery path available.
For a single managed device, record the edition, feature state, registry path, value, and verification date. For a fleet, apply the same sequence through the organization’s established elevated deployment process, test on each supported Windows release in use, and include rollback instructions. Do not treat a successful registry write as proof of a successful user experience until the actual logon and lock screens have been checked.
