The strongest no-relocation paths are software engineering, game services, infrastructure, engine programming, technical direction, animation, live operations, and contract or internship work. Eligibility is never automatic: “remote” may mean anywhere in the United States, only New York State, the Eastern time zone, or a list of states where the employer is registered. Check the geography, schedule, travel and employment terms on the specific posting before applying.
What remote game-development work looks like for New Yorkers
New York residents do not need to move to California, Texas or another traditional game hub to pursue every game-development role. Studios with New York operations and distributed teams advertise positions that can be performed from home, while some national employers accept remote workers anywhere in the United States.

The practical distinction is between a remote-friendly employer and a remote-eligible opening. A studio may support remote work generally but require an office for a particular team. Conversely, a posting may say “remote” while limiting applicants to New York, a group of registered states, the Eastern United States or a schedule that overlaps with Pacific time.

Remote hiring also remains changeable. Openings disappear when filled, and policies can differ between departments. Treat the examples below as documented paths to investigate, then reopen the employer’s own listing immediately before you submit an application.

| Marketing and finance around games | Community or social content, campaign support, analysis and financial operations. | ETC Interactive lists remote-or-in-person Social Media Marketing and Financial Analyst internships. |
Engineering appears repeatedly because code, services and tools can be delivered through version control, build systems and video calls. Art, operations and business roles can also be remote when the team has a reliable review and collaboration process. Your portfolio should match the discipline named in the posting rather than presenting yourself as a generalist by default.
Employers with documented remote or New York pathways

The page includes a remote contract Game Animator, remote-or-in-person Social Media Marketing and Financial Analyst internships, and a remote-or-in-person 3D Modeling Internship. The published compensation ranges are tied to those individual postings: $110,000–$150,000 plus equity for the Senior Gameplay Programmer, $85,000–$115,000 plus equity for the Junior Gameplay Programmer, $17–$25 per hour for the Social Media Marketing and 3D Modeling internships, and $20–$40 per hour for the Financial Analyst internship. Its listed roles include Solutions Engineer, Senior Software Engineer, Lead Software Engineer (Player Network), Software Engineer (Game Services), Technical Account Manager (Live Operations), Director of Infrastructure & Applications, Frontend Engineer and Associate Software Engineer (Game Services). The range of titles is useful for candidates whose experience is in backend, systems, infrastructure or operations rather than traditional gameplay code.

Its Senior Engine Programmer posting accepts fully remote candidates in the Eastern United States and lists $100,000–$150,000 per year. The described work covers modern C++ engine systems, performance, tooling and collaboration with external developers. A New Yorker outside the Capital Region should therefore distinguish between the studio’s local hybrid preference and the separate remote eligibility stated in the posting.
Netflix Games Studio
A listed Technical Director, Unannounced Cloud Game position is remote in the United States. The description calls for Unreal Engine 5 or Unity, game-systems and architecture experience, and knowledge of cloud technology. Remote applicants may need to travel for work events and collaborate on a Pacific-time-oriented schedule.
This is a useful model for evaluating senior remote roles: the location can be home-based while the job still includes travel and a daily schedule that may run later for someone in New York.

Take-Two and its labels
Take-Two’s careers site identifies its New York City headquarters and the Rockstar Games, 2K, Zynga and Ghost Story Games labels. The site is a useful discovery path for New York-area candidates, but a headquarters location should not be treated as remote eligibility. Open the specific vacancy and look for its permitted work locations, office cadence and time-zone expectations.
How to compare a remote opening before applying
| Question | What to verify | Why it matters in New York |
|---|---|---|
| Where may you live? | New York State, anywhere in the United States, the Eastern United States, or named registered states. | A job can be remote yet exclude your residence for payroll, registration or compliance reasons. |
| What work pattern is required? | Fully remote, remote-first with travel, or hybrid with fixed office days. | A Tuesday–Thursday office schedule is not workable from a distant part of the state without relocation or frequent travel. |
| Does your discipline match? | Gameplay, engine, services, infrastructure, animation, live operations, UI, technical direction or another named specialty. | Remote teams hire for specific production needs; a broad portfolio can obscure the relevant evidence. |
| Which hours overlap? | Eastern, Pacific-oriented or another required collaboration window. | New York applicants may need to start earlier or work later for Pacific-time teams. |
| What is the engagement type? | Employee, contract, internship, salary, hourly rate, equity, benefits and travel obligations. | An hourly internship and a salaried engineering role are not interchangeable financial options. |
| Is the listing current? | Whether the official posting is still live and accepting applications. | Roles can close without a broad policy change; Netflix specifically notes that jobs may be removed when filled. |
A no-relocation application workflow
- Choose a role family. Start with the work you can demonstrate—such as C++, gameplay, backend services, infrastructure, animation or technical direction—rather than searching only for the word “game developer.”
- Build a short employer list. Check ETC Interactive, WB Games New York, Rushdown Studios, Netflix Games Studio, Insomniac Games and Take-Two’s current openings. Use the employer’s own careers page as the source of truth.
- Filter by location. Record the exact wording: “remote in the United States,” “New York State,” “Eastern United States,” named registered states or a hybrid address. Do not infer eligibility from a company’s New York office.
- Read the schedule and travel clauses. Note required overlap, office visits, conferences, team events and any Pacific-time orientation before deciding that the role is truly home-based.
- Tailor the evidence in your application. Put the most relevant shipped project, code sample, tool, animation reel or live-service incident near the top. State your New York location and availability for the required hours.
- Confirm terms with recruiting. Ask whether the employer is currently registered to employ someone in your New York locality, whether remote status is permanent or role-specific, and how often travel is expected.
- Recheck immediately before submitting. A saved job link can outlive the opening. Confirm the title, location, compensation and application button on the live page.
What to show in a remote-ready portfolio
Engineering and gameplay
Show a playable build or concise technical case study, the systems you owned, performance decisions and how you collaborated. For a C++ or engine role, explain profiling, memory or frame-time improvements, tooling and the interface used by other developers. For game-services work, document APIs, deployment, observability, failure handling and player-facing effects without exposing confidential code.
Technical direction and cloud
Explain architecture choices, trade-offs between Unreal Engine 5 or Unity systems, and how you align designers, engineers and operations. A remote technical leader should make decisions legible in written design documents as well as meetings.
Animation and modeling
Provide a reel or turntable with labels identifying your contribution, software, constraints and iteration process. Remote art work depends on clean file organization, review notes and predictable handoffs, not only a final image.
Best Value
Operations, marketing and finance
Use measurable examples: an incident you coordinated, a process you improved, a campaign asset you delivered or an analysis that changed a decision. Protect confidential information and describe the result at an appropriate level.
Pay, status and practical costs
The documented ranges vary because they cover different seniorities and employment types. ETC Interactive’s programmer figures are annual salaries plus equity, while its internships are hourly. Rushdown’s Senior Engine Programmer range is annual pay. A remote contract or internship may not include the benefits, paid leave or equipment budget associated with a regular employee.
Ask for the complete compensation structure rather than comparing headline numbers. Clarify whether equipment is supplied, whether travel is reimbursed, how overtime or contract hours are handled, and whether equity is part of the offer or merely mentioned in the posting. Never transfer one employer’s range to another studio or role.

Common failure points and how to handle them
- “Remote” excludes New York. Re-read the permitted-state list. If New York is absent, ask recruiting before investing time in an assessment.
- Hybrid language is easy to miss. A local preference or fixed office days can change the job from no-relocation work to a commuting or travel commitment.
- Time-zone mismatch causes friction. Offer a dependable overlap window and be explicit about how you handle Pacific-oriented meetings from New York.
- The posting closes. Save the employer’s careers page, not just a third-party copy, and check the live status on the day you apply.
- Your portfolio is too broad. Reorder it around the exact discipline and seniority in the vacancy; remote hiring does not eliminate the need for role-specific proof.
- Travel is treated as relocation. Occasional events may be compatible with living in New York, but ask for frequency, duration and reimbursement before accepting.
Why New York remains a viable base
New York City’s Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment counted approximately 3,100 direct digital-games jobs in a 2020 study. That study identified software engineers as the most in-demand roles at large studios and described both large-studio and independent-development pathways. The figure is a historical snapshot, not a current statewide total, but it demonstrates that New York has an established games workforce rather than being only a feeder market.
New York State’s Digital Game Development report for the second half of calendar year 2024 records projected spending, hires and projects supported by the state’s tax credit. Those measures indicate continuing production activity and public support. Remote work adds access to employers outside a candidate’s immediate city while allowing the candidate to remain in New York.
Bottom line for a New York applicant
You can pursue credible remote game-development work without relocating, particularly in engineering, engine and infrastructure, game services, technical direction, animation, live operations and contract or internship roles. Start with openings that explicitly name New York, the Eastern United States or anywhere in the United States; then verify the exact state, schedule, travel and employment terms for that vacancy. A careful location check and a portfolio tailored to the role are more reliable than assuming a studio-wide remote policy applies to every job.
