The company says it will use the investment to expand software and AI features designed to turn frontline workers’ spoken updates into information businesses can search and act on. Relay reported that the round brings its total capital raised to more than $90 million.
What Relay does
Relay pairs push-to-talk radio hardware with cloud communications and software for frontline teams. Workers use a radio-style device to communicate during a shift; Relay describes its platform as adding AI, real-time translation, location awareness and automated workflows. Its current homepage also describes tools for reviewing shift activity and querying a searchable record. These are vendor descriptions, not independent evaluations of performance.
The company’s broader pitch is that important operational information is often spoken while work is underway but never captured in a formal log or business system. Relay calls this loss of information “signal evaporation” and is positioning its software as a way to make those conversations more useful beyond the immediate exchange.
What the $36 million is intended to fund
Relay says the new financing will support several areas of development and growth. The announcement describes priorities, not confirmation that every planned product or feature is already generally available.

- Market expansion and hiring: Growth in industrial and hospitality markets, alongside additional hiring.
Relay’s funding announcement names International Paper as the lead investor and identifies Cerity Partners, Harmonic Growth Partners and Thayer Investment Partners as new investors. International Paper is also a Relay customer. Keith Townsend, the company’s Group Vice President, Packaging Solutions North America, said in Relay’s announcement: “We run complex and demanding industrial operations, where strong communications isn’t a nice-to-have – it’s foundational,”
What Relay means by “frontline intelligence”
In this context, frontline intelligence means operational information gathered from workers’ day-to-day communications and made available for review or action. The idea is to bridge the gap between a quick spoken update—such as a problem, observation or handoff—and a record that supervisors or other teams can later find. Relay’s stated plans for querying shift data build on that idea, but the announcement does not establish that all planned query or agentic functions are currently available.

To illustrate the problem it is targeting, Relay’s September 2026 announcement reports results from a company-commissioned survey of 500 manufacturing professionals:
- 57 percent said their most important operational communication happens out loud, in person.
- 17 percent said almost everything workers notice and flag ends up in a system, log or formal report.
- 62 percent said communication breakdowns cause delays, rework or missed handoffs at least a few times a month.
These are Relay-reported survey results, not general-population findings. The announcement does not provide the full questionnaire or methodology, so the figures cannot establish how the results would generalize beyond the surveyed group.

Relay’s reported scale and customer metrics
Relay’s September 2026 announcement says the company serves hundreds of thousands of frontline workers, works with approximately 10 percent of the Fortune 500, has deployments across nearly 10,000 sites and processes over one billion data points weekly. It also reports 99 percent gross revenue retention and 130 percent net revenue retention among enterprise customers. These figures are company-reported and have not been independently validated in the cited announcement.
For historical context, Relay’s June 10, 2024 Series B announcement described Relay+ as a cloud-connected radio with safety alerts that could notify staff, share location and open a coordination channel. It described TeamTranslate as using AI to translate voice and text messages. Those earlier descriptions provide context, not a complete specification of current products, features or terms.

How to assess the approach
Relay is combining a familiar radio interaction with cloud software that aims to preserve and organize more of what happens during a shift. For a business considering that approach, the key questions are practical: how the devices connect across its sites, whether the hardware fits workers’ environments, what safety and language features are available in the required deployment, how information is stored and governed, and whether integrations support existing operational systems.
The company’s funding announcement presents its own case for capturing spoken information; it does not provide comparative performance data against named radio or communications alternatives. A conventional business two-way radio is a category-level alternative for organizations evaluating radio communication, but it should not be treated as an equivalent cloud platform or as compatible with Relay equipment. Relay’s sources do not establish Amazon availability or third-party accessory compatibility.
