Choose the Rega Planar 6 RS Edition if you want a conventional covered turntable, its brushed-aluminium finish, or the RS-specific Nd9 and Ania packages. Choose the Rega Planar 8 if you prefer Rega’s skeletal plinth, lower listed mass, triple-layer platter, or its broader published choice of factory-fitted cartridges. Both use the RB880 tonearm and Rega’s Tancast 8 foam-core engineering, so the specification differences describe different design priorities rather than proving that one must sound better for every listener. Compare the exact cartridge, phono-stage bundle, price and stock with a local Rega dealer before ordering.

Rega Planar 6 RS vs Planar 8: the short answer

The Planar 6 RS Edition is the more traditional-looking model. It retains a full, rectangular plinth, includes a smoked dustcover and uses a dual-layer glass platter, two Reference EBLT belts and a CNC twin-drive pulley. The Planar 8 is visibly different: its skeletal plinth is designed to reduce mass, its one-piece dustcover is removable, and its platter has three glass layers with a single Reference EBLT belt.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Both turntables use Rega’s RB880 precision tonearm and an external Neo-family power supply. The RS is listed at 5.4 kg, while the Planar 8 is listed at 4.2 kg. Those numbers are useful for planning a stand and handling the turntable, but they are not independent evidence that either model has superior sound.

Chassis and dustcover: classic furniture or skeletal engineering?

Planar 6 RS Edition: a covered, conventional footprint

Rega says the RS Edition combines a Tancast 8 foam-core plinth with high-pressure laminate and a brushed-aluminium skin. Its outline follows the familiar full-width Rega shape rather than exposing the area around the platter. A smoked dustcover is supplied, so the record, platter and arm can remain protected between listening sessions without buying a separate cover.

The RS form is easier to match with equipment racks designed for conventional turntables. It also presents fewer open edges for dust to settle on the platter or arm. That does not make it automatically better isolated or quieter; it simply makes the enclosure and day-to-day ownership more traditional.

Planar 8: an open frame and removable cover

The Planar 8 uses a skeletal Tancast 8 foam-core plinth between HPL layers. Rega describes the skeletal construction as a way to reduce mass. That is the manufacturer’s engineering rationale, not a controlled independent demonstration of an audible advantage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its single-piece dustcover can be removed when playing. Rega’s dimensions are stated with the cover fitted, so allow for the cover when checking shelf clearance and for its removal when deciding how much vertical space is comfortable. The open shape is a strong visual choice: it exposes more of the platter and arm, while providing less of the furniture-like enclosure that defines the RS.

What both turntables share

RB880 tonearm

Both product pages specify Rega’s RB880 precision tonearm. This common arm is important when comparing the models: the decision is not between two entirely different arm platforms. Cartridge selection, setup and the plinth, platter, belt and power-supply implementations are the more visible areas of differentiation.

External Neo-family speed control

Each turntable uses an external Neo-family power supply rather than putting the speed-control electronics in the plinth. The RS is paired with a custom-matched Neo MK2 PSU. The Planar 8 page identifies a Neo PSU and describes electronic speed change and fine speed adjustment. The separate power-supply boxes are listed as 180 × 150 × 50 mm for the RS and 180 × 50 × 155 mm for the Planar 8; because Rega presents the dimensions in different orders, do not treat the order of those numbers as a guaranteed width, depth and height convention without checking the manual.

In practical terms, either model needs a nearby mains outlet and enough shelf space for its external supply. Keep the PSU away from places where a cable can be snagged, and do not hide it behind tightly packed components if that makes the power switch or connections inaccessible. Ask the dealer whether the supplied regional power cable is included, particularly when buying an imported unit.

Tancast 8 foam-core construction

The two models use Tancast 8 foam-core material, but in different chassis shapes and surface treatments. Shared material and arm technology mean that the RS-versus-8 choice is primarily about implementation and ownership preferences, not a completely different design family.

Platter, pulley and belt differences

Planar 6 RS Edition

The RS has a 16 mm dual-layer float-glass platter. Its drive system uses a CNC twin-drive pulley and two Reference EBLT belts. The twin-belt arrangement and pulley are RS-specific published features, paired with the Neo MK2 supply.

Planar 8

The Planar 8 uses a triple-layer glass platter described by Rega as having a super-flywheel effect, plus one Reference EBLT belt. Its product page also lists electronic speed change and fine speed adjustment through the Neo supply.

Rega’s separate Reference EBLT drive-belt page says the belt is suitable for all Rega turntables and is highly recommended for Planar 6 and Planar 3 models using the Neo TT PSU. That wording does not make replacing the supplied belt on either the RS or Planar 8 a mandatory upgrade. Both compared models already list a Reference EBLT belt in their standard drive specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Belts are consumables. Keep the original belt packaging and follow the manual when fitting a replacement; stretching, twisting or contaminating a belt with oil can cause slip. Because the RS uses two belts, replacements should be treated as a matched pair if the dealer or manual specifies that approach. Do not assume a belt marketed for another Rega model changes the RS or Planar 8 specification.

Factory-fitted cartridge packages

Model Moving-magnet options Moving-coil options Other published bundle
Planar 6 RS Edition Nd9 Ania Optional P6 RS / Ania / Fono MC package noted by Rega in a July 2026 page update
Planar 8 Nd7 or Nd9 Ania Pro or Apheta 3 No single universal bundle should be assumed; confirm the seller’s package

The RS page lists factory-fitted Nd9 MM and Ania MC versions. It also describes an optional bundle combining the turntable, Ania cartridge and Fono MC phono stage. Rega’s July 2026 update identifies that package, but does not establish its price or stock in every country.

The Planar 8 page lists Nd7 and Nd9 MM versions, along with Ania Pro and Apheta 3 MC versions. Rega’s Nd7 product page separately states that the cartridge is available factory-fitted on both Planar 6 and Planar 8. A dealer may not offer every listed combination in every market, so confirm the exact cartridge and whether fitting is included on the quotation.

MM and MC implications

Moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges require a phono stage with the appropriate input and gain. An MM package is the simpler choice if your amplifier or phono preamp has only an MM input. An MC package can be appropriate when your system has a suitable MC input or an external MC phono stage, but it should not be selected solely because its model name appears higher in a product list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rega’s listed options are factory configurations, not a guarantee that every cartridge can be exchanged without checking arm setup, alignment and phono-stage compatibility. Ask the dealer to state the cartridge, phono stage and any installation or adjustment included in the package.

If you already own a phono stage, check its input type before comparing headline prices. A cheaper MM turntable package can become more expensive if you later add an MC stage, while an MC package may duplicate equipment you already have. Also ask whether the cartridge is aligned and tracking force checked before dispatch; factory fitting is valuable because it reduces the risk of damage during first setup, but the exact service varies by seller.

Size, weight and furniture planning

Planning point Planar 6 RS Edition Planar 8
Turntable dimensions 447 × 117 × 360 mm, lid closed 420 × 125 × 315 mm, dustcover fitted
Turntable weight 5.4 kg 4.2 kg
Separate PSU dimensions 180 × 150 × 50 mm 180 × 50 × 155 mm

The RS is wider and heavier on the published figures, while the Planar 8 is narrower, deeper according to the stated dimensions and 1.2 kg lighter. Do not compare the dimensions as though both were measured in exactly the same cover condition: the RS is specified with the lid closed, and the Planar 8 with its dustcover fitted.

Measure the usable shelf, not just the advertised width. Leave room for the dustcover to open or be removed, the tonearm to be operated safely and the Neo PSU to sit where its cable can reach without strain. A rigid, level support is more important than choosing a shelf based only on the turntable’s listed mass.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the shelf depth behind the turntable as well as the front-to-back figure. Signal and power plugs can project beyond the chassis, and the Planar 8’s cover needs a safe place if you remove it during playback. Keep the deck away from loudspeaker cabinets and subwoofers where possible, and ensure the support is level before setting tracking force or anti-skate.

Setup and ownership checklist

Whichever model you choose, unpack it on a stable surface and retain the transit materials for future moves. Verify that the platter, belt or belts, counterweight, dustcover and power supply are present before connecting anything. A missing counterweight or incorrectly fitted belt is a setup problem, not evidence of a defective turntable.

  1. Level the support and place the turntable where the arm can move freely.
  2. Fit the platter and belt or belts exactly as shown in the supplied manual; avoid touching belt surfaces with oily fingers.
  3. Install the counterweight and balance the RB880 arm before setting the cartridge’s specified tracking force.
  4. Connect the Neo PSU, select the correct speed and check that the platter reaches speed without belt noise or visible wandering.
  5. Confirm the phono-stage input: MM for Nd7 or Nd9, and an appropriate MC setting for Ania, Ania Pro or Apheta 3.
  6. Play a clean, familiar record at a moderate level before final cable management, listening for hum caused by routing or a loose connection.

Do not lift the turntable by the tonearm, platter or dustcover. When moving it, secure the arm as instructed by Rega and use two hands under the plinth. The lighter Planar 8 is easier to carry, but its lower mass does not remove the need for careful handling.

Which model fits your priorities?

Choose the Planar 6 RS Edition when:

  • You want a classic, enclosed Rega appearance rather than an open skeletal frame.
  • A supplied smoked dustcover is important for dust protection and everyday storage.
  • You want the RS’s dual-layer platter, twin Reference EBLT belts and CNC twin-drive pulley.
  • The Nd9 MM or Ania MC factory configuration matches your phono-stage plan.
  • You prefer the brushed-aluminium HPL finish documented for the RS launch configuration.

Choose the Planar 8 when:

  • You specifically prefer the skeletal plinth and removable one-piece cover.
  • The lower 4.2 kg listed mass makes handling or a particular rack easier.
  • You want the triple-layer glass platter and the Planar 8’s published Neo speed-control features.
  • You need a wider choice of listed factory cartridges: Nd7, Nd9, Ania Pro or Apheta 3.
  • The Planar 8’s proportions fit your furniture better after accounting for the fitted cover.

How to compare dealer packages before buying

  1. Write down the exact model name. Confirm whether the quote is for a Planar 6 RS Edition or a standard Planar 6, and whether it is a Planar 8 with or without a factory-fitted cartridge.
  2. Record the cartridge and phono input. Mark the supplied cartridge as MM or MC and check that your amplifier or phono stage accepts that type. If the quote includes a Fono MC, verify that it is the specific RS/Ania bundle rather than an assumed accessory.
  3. Check what is in the box. Confirm the dustcover, Neo-family PSU, cartridge fitting, counterweight and any dealer setup service. Do not assume a product-page option is stocked locally.
  4. Measure the installation space. Use the published dimensions as a starting point, then add clearance for cover operation, cables and the separate PSU. Remember that Rega states the two turntable dimensions under different cover conditions.
  5. Ask for the current delivered price and warranty. Prices, taxes, bundles and warranty terms vary by country. Rega directs customers to a retailer or distributor for warranty details, so obtain those terms in writing.
  6. Keep the manual for setup. The RS manual is available from Rega at Planar 6 RS User Manual (PDF). Use the manual supplied with your exact turntable for cartridge, arm and speed-control procedures rather than relying on a generic video.

What the price comparison should include

There is no single current worldwide price for either model. Compare the complete delivered package in your currency, including the cartridge, phono stage if offered, taxes, shipping and dealer setup. A bare turntable and a factory-fitted package are not like-for-like quotes. Ask whether a discount applies only to a specific finish or cartridge, and whether the quoted unit is new, ex-demonstration or refurbished.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also price the ownership items you actually need: an appropriate phono stage, replacement stylus or cartridge policy, isolation support if your rack is unsuitable, and safe delivery insurance. Rega’s warranty arrangements can vary by country, so obtain the local retailer or distributor’s terms rather than assuming that an overseas listing provides the same coverage.

What is known about sound, and what is not?

The documented differences are mechanical and ergonomic: plinth geometry, cover arrangement, platter construction, pulley and belt count, power-supply version, weight and cartridge packages. No named independent comparative measurement or controlled listening test established a universal sonic winner between these two models.

Rega’s descriptions of the skeletal plinth, super-flywheel platter or other performance benefits are manufacturer explanations. They are useful for understanding design intent, but they should not be presented as independent test results. Your cartridge, phono stage, record condition, setup and support can all affect what you hear, so a dealer demonstration with the intended cartridge is more informative than assuming the specification alone predicts a result.

For a fair audition, use the same amplifier, speakers, phono-stage settings and record on both decks, and identify whether the cartridges are different. A Planar 8 fitted with an Apheta 3 is not a direct listening comparison with an RS fitted with an Nd9. If you cannot arrange a same-cartridge demonstration, treat listening impressions as package comparisons rather than proof that the chassis alone determines the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Availability, finishes and dates to verify

Rega’s Planar 8 page notes that the white finish became available from April 2023. The same page records a new factory-fitted Nd9 option in a November 2025 update. Those page dates document when Rega announced the options; they do not prove that a white or Nd9-equipped unit is currently in stock.

Rega’s timeline describes the Planar 6 RS launch configuration as a brushed-aluminium HPL finish with the CNC twin-drive pulley, RB880 arm, Nd9 and Neo MK2 PSU. The RS product page’s July 2026 update mentions the P6 RS / Ania / Fono MC package. Treat both as configuration information and confirm current regional availability with a dealer.

Bottom line: RS Edition or Planar 8?

Buy the Planar 6 RS Edition when the classic covered chassis, brushed-metal appearance, twin-belt drive or Nd9/Ania package is the reason you are upgrading. Buy the Planar 8 when the skeletal design, lower listed mass, triple-layer platter or broader cartridge menu matters more. Because the RB880 arm and core engineering approach are shared, neither specification sheet can justify a blanket claim that one sounds better for every system. The right choice is the one whose physical design, cartridge and verified local package fit your room and phono stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between the Rega Planar 6 RS and Planar 8?

The RS keeps a classic full plinth and supplied smoked dustcover, with a dual-layer glass platter, twin Reference EBLT belts and CNC twin-drive pulley. The Planar 8 has a skeletal plinth, removable one-piece cover, triple-layer glass platter and one Reference EBLT belt. Both use the RB880 tonearm and an external Neo-family PSU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Planar 8 better sounding than the Planar 6 RS Edition?

The published specifications do not establish a universal sonic winner. Rega explains the skeletal plinth and platter designs as engineering choices, but no named independent controlled comparison was established. Cartridge, phono stage, setup, support and records can influence the result, so audition comparable packages where possible.

Which cartridges can be factory-fitted?

The RS page lists Nd9 moving-magnet and Ania moving-coil versions, plus an RS/Ania/Fono MC bundle. The Planar 8 page lists Nd7 and Nd9 MM, and Ania Pro and Apheta 3 MC options. Local dealers may stock fewer combinations, so confirm the exact cartridge and fitting service.

Do both turntables include a dustcover?

Yes, but the designs differ. The RS includes a smoked dustcover with its classic plinth. The Planar 8 uses a removable single-piece cover, and its published dimensions are given with that cover fitted.

Can I use an MM or MC phono stage with either turntable?

The turntable itself can be ordered with different MM or MC cartridges, but the phono stage must match the cartridge type. Nd7 and Nd9 are MM; Ania, Ania Pro and Apheta 3 are MC. Check the input and gain requirements before choosing a package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I verify with a dealer before ordering?

Confirm the exact model, cartridge, phono-stage inclusion, dustcover, Neo PSU, installation service, delivered price, stock status and country-specific warranty. Measure shelf space using the stated cover condition, and allow room for cables, cover operation and the separate PSU.

The Bottom Line

Choose the Planar 6 RS Edition for its classic covered form, twin-belt drive and Nd9/Ania packages. Choose the Planar 8 for its skeletal design, lower listed mass, triple-layer platter and wider cartridge menu. Compare the exact local package and warranty; neither specification sheet proves a universal sound-quality winner.
