On October 6, 2026, two outlets reported that GameStop’s refurbished PS5 Pro costs far more than a new one. Tom’s Hardware reported $1,399.99. Shacknews reported $1,329.99 the same day. A new PS5 Pro has a U.S. list price of $899.99, so the used console is priced roughly 48% to 56% above new. The two reports disagree, and neither is a verified live price.
What was reported, and by whom
| Figure | Source | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| $800 → $1,399.99 | Tom’s Hardware (Jowi Morales), Oct. 6, 2026 | GameStop’s refurbished PS5 Pro price, reported as reflected on its website |
| $1,329.99 | Shacknews (TJ Denzer), Oct. 6, 2026 | Refurbished/pre-owned listing seen on GameStop’s sales pages |
| $899.99 | Associated Press, 2026 | U.S. PS5 Pro price after Sony’s $150 increase |
The sources do not explain the gap between $1,399.99 and $1,329.99. It could come from different listings or conditions, timing, or a price that was changing. Treat each number as that outlet’s dated observation. Check GameStop’s listing yourself before relying on either.

How the “50%” works out
- $1,399.99 vs. $899.99: about 55.6% more.
- $1,329.99 vs. $899.99: about 47.8% more.
These percentages are our arithmetic from the cited prices, not a published market statistic. “50% more” is a fair round figure, not an exact one. In dollars, the premium over new is roughly $430 to $500.
Why would used cost more than new?
Tom’s Hardware says the increase appeared on GameStop’s site. It also cites a leaked employee memo, posted to Reddit, saying the higher used price was intentional. A subreddit moderator reportedly vouched for the poster. That is secondary reporting on an unverified memo. The sources contain no direct GameStop explanation, and they don’t establish why the company chose this price.

The new-console context
The Associated Press reported that Sony raised the U.S. PS5 Pro price by $150, to $899.99, in 2026. The AP attributes this statement to Sony’s blog post about the change: “We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.”
Tom’s Hardware also reported that new units were out of stock at GameStop, Sony and Target when it checked. It said the prices it saw at Best Buy and Walmart were above MSRP. This is a snapshot from one day, not a current stock guarantee. Scarcity of new units may make a used price look less odd to some buyers, but the sources don’t say that is GameStop’s reasoning.

GameStop’s product page describes the PS5 Pro as an all-digital console with 2TB of built-in storage. It works with a detachable disc drive that is sold separately. Per the page’s FAQ, Pro enhancements depend on game-specific patches, and the console plays standard PS5 games. If you want physical discs, the drive is a separate cost on top of any console price.

- Compare against $899.99, not the old price. At the reported figures, the used unit costs more than Sony’s own list price.
- Confirm what’s included. Check the condition grade, controller, cables and whether the disc drive is part of the bundle.
- Check returns and warranty. The cited reports don’t establish these terms, so read GameStop’s listing for them.
- Re-check the price on the day you buy. Two same-day reports already disagreed.
- Look at other sellers. The reports don’t say GameStop is the only option, and they give no purchase recommendation.
