In Aion 2, the item commonly called a “refining stone” is generally listed as an Enhancement Stone. It raises an equipment item’s enhancement level and is normally spent together with Kina (also spelled Kinah in some guides). It is not a universal upgrade currency: Breakthrough Stones extend an enhancement cap, slot-specific Enhancement Scrolls unlock or support certain upgrades, Manastones and Spirit Stones change socketed properties, and Arcana crystals belong to a separate progression system.
The exact names, caps, rates, slot requirements and failure rules can vary by region and patch. The AION 2 Wiki warns that many detailed figures come from Korean and Taiwanese service and may not match a global build (AION 2 Wiki). Confirm the current item tooltip and enhancement screen in your client before committing scarce materials.

What a Refining (Enhancement) Stone Actually Does
Enhancement Stones are the ordinary, item-level material for increasing the visible enhancement level of weapons, armor and accessories. An attempt typically consumes stones and Kina/Kinah. This is the “make the number on this piece higher” path, rather than a way to add a socket, lock an Arcana trait or pass a normal cap.
Guides use “Enhancement Stone,” not “Refining Stone,” as the basic item name. If a translation, player chat or older guide says refining stone, inspect the icon and the in-client description to ensure it is the same item. Names can differ between localizations, but the function is more important than the nickname: the ordinary stone is accepted by the enhancement-level panel and is not automatically accepted by every other upgrade window.

Equipment-system guidance describes stones and currency as the funding for enhancement, while dungeon and expedition activities can supply stones or gear. Treat those acquisition statements as guide descriptions rather than a guarantee for every region or patch (AION 2 Help). The reliable test is the current item tooltip and the reward list shown by your client.
What the stone changes
An Enhancement Stone changes the item’s enhancement level as a whole. It does not, by itself, rewrite a weapon’s socketed statistics, improve an Arcana property, or authorize progression beyond a cap. Those distinctions matter when the interface presents several buttons that all look like “upgrade.” Select the exact equipment system first, then collect the material that system requests.
What it normally costs
Guides describe Kina or Kinah as the currency paid with Enhancement Stones. The spelling varies in published guides, so follow the localization in your wallet and enhancement panel. Budget the currency as a separate resource: even when a stone can later be recovered through extraction or dismantling, the currency spent on attempts is not necessarily returned.

The wiki’s broad organizing rule is useful: some resources upgrade the item as a whole, while others alter its properties. Its detailed system information is based on Korean and Taiwanese service, so apply that rule cautiously to a global or later build (AION 2 Wiki). The table is therefore a functional map, not a promise that every region uses exactly the same labels, slot list or costs.
Four comparison axes to use in the client
- Target: ordinary level, cap, socketed stat, Theostone system or Arcana property.
- Slot: weapon, armor, accessory or a named slot such as an amulet or belt.
- Companions: Kina/Kinah, a scroll or another item may be required in addition to the main material.
- Risk and recovery: check failure text, possible downgrade, what is consumed and what extraction returns.
Enhancement Stones and Breakthrough Stones
Regular enhancement
Use Enhancement Stones when the enhancement panel asks for the ordinary level-up material. The stone and currency are consumed for the attempt; the item itself is the target. This is the material you spend repeatedly while developing a piece that you expect to keep. A higher enhancement level may be useful for the item’s current role, but the guides do not establish one universal “correct” stopping point for every class or gear tier.
Breaking the cap
A Breakthrough Stone serves a different purpose: it permits progression beyond a normal enhancement ceiling. It should not be substituted for ordinary stones, and ordinary stones should not be stockpiled as though they alone will unlock the next cap. The applicable cap and the exact breakthrough cost are version-sensitive; read the item and equipment panel in the current client.
Think of breakthrough as a gate, not a faster level-up. If the panel is still accepting ordinary Enhancement Stones for the next level, a Breakthrough Stone may be unnecessary. If the panel shows a cap message or explicitly requests breakthrough material, farming more ordinary stones will not remove that gate. Keep the two inventories separate so a cap-extension item is not accidentally spent on a disposable piece.

A practical sequencing rule
- Raise the item with ordinary Enhancement Stones only while the panel lists normal enhancement requirements.
- Pause at the displayed cap and inspect the breakthrough requirement, including any currency charge.
- Compare the item’s expected lifespan with the value of the breakthrough material.
- Resume ordinary enhancement only after the cap is actually opened and the panel confirms the new requirements.
Where Enhancement Scrolls Fit
Some slots require an Enhancement Scroll in addition to stones and Kina. Guides specifically mention amulets and belts as examples, but do not establish one permanent slot list for every regional build. If the enhancement screen shows a scroll requirement, obtain that companion item before assuming more stones will solve the problem.

A scroll is therefore a slot-specific companion, not a universal substitute. It may be possible to own plenty of stones and still be unable to enhance an amulet or belt because the scroll is missing. Conversely, obtaining a scroll does not remove the ordinary stone or currency charge if those remain listed in the panel.
- Open the equipment enhancement interface and select the exact item.
- Read the required-material row, including any slot-specific scroll.
- Check the currency charge and the current success or failure rule shown by the client.
- Confirm that the scroll belongs to the selected slot or item category.
- Only then confirm the attempt; a stone-only attempt cannot bypass a missing scroll.
Do not infer the slot list from another region, an old video or a different item quality. The guides’ examples establish why scrolls exist, but the live interface determines whether your selected piece needs one.
Socket Stones, Theostones and Arcana Resources
Manastones and Spirit Stones
Manastones are socketed items for weapon and armor statistics in the fan-wiki classification. Spirit Stones are presented there as the accessory counterpart. They add or change properties in a socket path; they do not raise the enhancement level displayed for the gear. Check the current regional terminology, because translations and system names can change.
Socket decisions should be made separately from level decisions. A high-level item can still need a Manastone or Spirit Stone, while a socketed item can remain at a modest enhancement level. When comparing two upgrades, identify whether you are buying more item-level power or changing the distribution of stats. The material, interface and recovery behavior may all differ.
Theostone
Theostone appears as its own equipment system or tab in the guides. The reviewed material does not establish a universal list of applicable gear or a single global cost, so use the current Theostone interface rather than treating it as another name for Enhancement Stone. If an item is listed under a Theostone tab, follow that system’s requirements instead of moving stones into the ordinary enhancement panel.
Mysterious and Pure Crystals
Mysterious Crystal is described as an Arcana-refining resource. Pure Crystal locks one Arcana property. Both belong to Arcana progression and property management, not ordinary weapon, armor or accessory enhancement. Spending either on Arcana will not raise the enhancement number shown on a sword, chest piece or ring.
Arcana resources also illustrate why “upgrade material” is too broad a category. Mysterious Crystal changes Arcana progression, while Pure Crystal protects a chosen property. Their value depends on the Arcana decision in front of you, not on the item’s ordinary enhancement cap.

GEGEBASE’s guide says its “current Global” reference guarantees enhancement through +10. It reports that attempts above +10 can fail, consume the required materials and leave the equipment intact without lowering its enhancement level (GEGEBASE). This is a guide claim, not independently confirmed official documentation in the material reviewed, so do not assume the +10 threshold or non-destructive behavior applies to every region, patch or item.

The important distinction is between the equipment surviving and the attempt being free. Under that guide’s description, required materials are consumed on failure. A surviving item does not imply that Enhancement Stones, a scroll or Kina/Kinah are refunded. Socketed investments and other property changes should also be treated as separate unless the panel explicitly says they are protected.
Before a risky attempt, record what the panel says about success, consumption and downgrade protection. A failure rule can change with a patch, an item category or a regional implementation. Never infer that socketed investments or currency will be refunded merely because the gear itself survives.
Questions to answer before clicking confirm
- Is the attempt at or above the milestone shown by the current client?
- Which items are consumed whether the attempt succeeds or fails?
- Can the level drop, or does the panel promise that the item remains intact?
- Is a slot scroll consumed along with the stone?
- Does the displayed rule apply to this exact item category?
If any answer is unclear, stop and inspect the tooltip, help text or current patch notes. A guide’s description can orient you, but the live client is the safer authority for a costly click.
Should You Spend Stones on This Item?
The best target is the piece whose benefits will last long enough to justify both stones and unrecovered currency. The equipment guide explicitly recommends balancing investment against an item’s replacement timeline. A weapon-first approach is common for damage-focused characters because weapon improvement can affect offensive output, but it is not universal: class role, item quality, group needs, transfer or inheritance rules and the next planned replacement all matter.
- Keep the item: Enhancement is easier to justify when the piece is high quality, difficult to replace or expected to transfer to a later build.
- Replace it soon: Stop at a modest level when a dungeon, expedition or planned progression step is likely to supply a better item shortly.
- Check inheritance first: If the client offers transfer or inheritance, read exactly which enhancement, socket and currency investments carry over.
- Reserve breakthrough materials: Do not spend a cap-extension item on gear you already expect to discard.
- Budget Kina separately: A stone may be recoverable while the currency charge is not.
- Match the role: Damage-focused characters often look at weapons first, but defensive, support or progression bottlenecks can make armor or an accessory the more sensible target.
A simple replacement test
Ask three questions before enhancing: How long will this item be equipped? Can its investment move to another item? What is the cost of waiting for the next dungeon or expedition reward? If the answer to the first two is uncertain and an upgrade source is near, conserve stones and currency. If the item is difficult to replace and transfer rules preserve the investment, a larger commitment may be easier to justify.
Recovery, Extraction and Dismantling
The reviewed guides identify extraction or dismantling as a way to recover Enhancement Stones. They also caution that Kina and socketed investments are not necessarily returned. Because this behavior is volatile and may be version-specific, inspect the exact confirmation window in your client before dismantling anything valuable.
- Open the extraction or dismantling screen, not the normal enhancement screen.
- Preview the returned items and the items explicitly listed as lost.
- Confirm whether the preview distinguishes Enhancement Stones from currency, scrolls and socketed items.
- Check that the gear is not needed for transfer, collection, a set effect or another character.
- Capture the displayed result before confirming if the return rules are unclear.
Recovery is not a reason to enhance recklessly. Even if stones are returned, the currency charge may remain unreimbursed, and a socketed Manastone or Spirit Stone may not come back. Treat extraction as a possible partial recovery, not a guarantee of a full refund.

Other systems may place Breakthrough Stones, scrolls, socket stones or Arcana crystals in different activities or shops. Use the material’s own acquisition tooltip and the activity rewards panel as the authoritative route for your current build.

Do not farm a material solely because its name sounds similar. First identify whether the bottleneck is an ordinary level, a cap breakthrough, a slot scroll, a socket property or an Arcana property. That distinction prevents spending stamina or currency on an item the enhancement panel will not accept.
Match the farm to the bottleneck
- Ordinary level blocked: look for the Enhancement Stone source listed by the client and reserve enough Kina/Kinah for attempts.
- Cap blocked: search specifically for Breakthrough Stones rather than increasing the ordinary-stone stockpile.
- Slot blocked: identify the required Enhancement Scroll and its listed activity or shop.
- Socket blocked: use the Manastone or Spirit Stone path for the applicable gear type.
- Arcana blocked: follow the Mysterious Crystal or Pure Crystal requirement shown by the Arcana interface.
Dungeon and expedition rewards can also provide replacement gear. When a likely replacement is close, compare its expected quality with the cost of enhancing the current item before spending scarce materials.

Use Enhancement Stones for ordinary enhancement levels, Breakthrough Stones for cap progression, scrolls for specified slots, socket stones for property changes and crystals for Arcana. Always verify the live client’s requirements, failure text, currency charge and recovery preview before spending.
