Redmi A2 is a genuine 2023 entry-level Xiaomi phone, but “M8493” is not confirmed as its official Xiaomi model number. Xiaomi’s published regional specifications use identifiers such as 23026RN54G. M8493 is more likely to be a retailer, inventory, marketplace or listing code—or an error. Before buying, open Settings → About phone → All specs and match the model number and IMEI with the box and the intended carrier.
What “M8493” means
Xiaomi’s product and support pages do not identify M8493 as the Redmi A2’s official model number. Regional Redmi A2 variants can have different model strings; one Xiaomi specification page lists 23026RN54G (Xiaomi regional specifications). Therefore, treat M8493 as an unverified seller or catalog identifier until the phone itself proves otherwise.
Do not confuse this phone with the Xiaomi Mi A2, a separate 2018 Android One model. Also check that a listing is not actually for a Redmi A2+, Poco C51 or another regional equivalent.
Verify a phone before paying
- Open Settings → About phone (or About device).
- Choose All specs if that option appears, and record the model name, model number, RAM and storage.
- Compare the software-reported IMEI and model information with the box and regulatory label.
- Ask the seller for the exact model number and IMEI before purchase; do not rely on “Redmi A2 M8493” alone.
- Check the exact LTE bands and carrier VoLTE/IMEI acceptance for your location.
Xiaomi documents a hardware-test route through Settings → About phone → All specs → Kernel version, tapped four times, plus dialer test codes. Menus vary by region and software build, so these checks are not universal (Xiaomi support FAQ).

What performance is like
Good enough for
- Calls, SMS, WhatsApp and similar messaging
- Email, light web browsing and simple social apps
- Basic navigation, music and locally stored video
- Occasional casual games
- A low-cost first, spare, child or elderly-user phone when expectations are modest
Where it struggles
- 2GB models frequently reload apps during multitasking.
- Slow eMMC storage makes startup, installation and updates feel sluggish.
- Demanding 3D games, video editing and large app libraries are poor fits.
- Android Go reduces background overhead but cannot overcome limited RAM and storage.
Notebookcheck described the phone as heavily compromised, citing a dim display, restricted Wi-Fi and LTE performance and occasional reception instability, while finding Android Go appropriate for the hardware (independent review).
Display and cameras
The 6.52-inch 720p panel is large and readable indoors, but its 60Hz refresh rate and roughly 400-nit typical brightness are modest. Outdoor visibility can be difficult in strong sunlight.
The 8MP rear camera can produce usable daylight snapshots of still subjects. Expect limited dynamic range, weak detail when cropping and poor low-light results. The QVGA second sensor is an auxiliary depth/imaging lens, not a second useful focal length. The 5MP front camera is serviceable for basic calls and selfies. Xiaomi lists the camera specifications on its regional page (Xiaomi).

The 5,000mAh battery is the phone’s clearest strength. Xiaomi’s own laboratory estimates claim up to 28 hours of calling, 626 hours of standby, 19 hours of video playback and 33 hours of reading; those figures are test-condition estimates, not guarantees (Xiaomi product page). Signal strength, brightness, applications, temperature and battery age can change endurance substantially.
Charging is limited to 10W through an outdated Micro USB port. A second-hand 2023-era unit may have considerably less than its original capacity. Test for rapid drain, heat, intermittent charging and a loose or damaged port before accepting it.
Carrier and regional compatibility
One Xiaomi regional specification lists these bands:
- 2G: 850/900/1800/1900MHz
- 3G: bands 1, 5 and 8
- 4G FDD: bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20 and 28
- 4G TDD: bands 38, 40 and 41
That list does not guarantee service on every network. A US buyer must separately confirm the exact regional model, local LTE bands, VoLTE provisioning, IMEI acceptance and the carrier’s current policy, especially after 3G shutdowns. Do not promise AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon or an MVNO will accept an imported unit. Xiaomi’s Mexico page labels one regional product “AT&T version”; that description is not proof of US AT&T compatibility (Mexico specifications).

Before activation, obtain the IMEI and model from the seller and run both through the intended carrier’s compatibility checker. The Redmi A2 has no 5G, and missing low-frequency bands can mean weak indoor coverage even when some LTE service works.

Android Go is designed for entry-level phones. Official Xiaomi pages document Android 12 Go Edition, while later units and updates have appeared with Android 13 Go Edition. Check Settings → About phone → Android version on the actual device rather than assuming one version applies to every A2.
Xiaomi’s FAQ says the phone lacks split-screen, full-screen gesture navigation, Dual Apps, floating windows and double-tap-to-wake. Call recording can depend on region (Xiaomi support FAQ). Do not assume active security support in 2026: a historical review discussed a two-year security-update promise, but that does not establish current updates for your unit.
Reset and bootloader cautions
Xiaomi states that the Redmi A2 has a locked bootloader. To enter recovery, power off the phone and hold Volume Up + Power until the Mi logo appears. Choosing a factory reset erases user data, so back up first and remove Google accounts before selling or returning the device (Xiaomi support).
Should you buy a Redmi A2 in 2026?
A very cheap, tested used unit
It can make sense as a temporary, spare, child or basic communication phone if the battery is healthy, the exact model is known and the carrier confirms compatibility. Used listings still exist, but marketplace inventory does not establish a dependable market-wide price (example marketplace listing).
New old stock
Be cautious. Pay only a clearly low price that reflects an older design, possible battery aging, Micro USB charging, 32GB storage and uncertain remaining support. If the price approaches a current entry-level phone, choose the newer device.
Primary phone, gaming or long-term use
Usually avoid it. The combination of low RAM, slow storage, basic cameras, no 5G, slow charging and uncertain 2026 security coverage leaves little margin for several more years of intensive use.
Newer alternatives
| Alternative | Why investigate it | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi A3 or newer Redmi A-series | Family successor with newer hardware choices, USB-C and configurations reaching 128GB | Local price, exact variant, LTE bands and update policy (reference) |
| Samsung Galaxy A-series | Current US-market ecosystem and newer support position | Specific model, storage, price and carrier version (Samsung US) |
| Galaxy A06-class phone | Newer software, processor and commonly larger storage than the A2 | Regional specifications and current price (comparison) |
| Motorola Moto G model | Unlocked and carrier-friendly options can be easier to verify in the United States | Choose by current model, bands, storage, price and update policy |
Compare the exact phone available in your country, not just the family name. A newer low-cost model with USB-C, more storage and a clear support policy can be better value even when its sticker price is higher.

Quick Recap
Used-buyer checklist
- Photograph or record the model number, IMEI and regulatory label.
- Confirm LTE bands, VoLTE and IMEI acceptance with the carrier.
- Check whether the phone is 2GB/32GB or 3GB/32GB, and inspect free internal storage.
- Verify the installed Android Go version and run system updates.
- Test the battery, screen brightness, cameras, speaker, headphone jack, SIM slots, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and Micro USB port.
- Look for swelling, overheating, liquid damage, a loose port or an IMEI mismatch.
- Ensure the previous owner removed Google and Xiaomi accounts and that the device reaches the setup screen after reset.
- Buy only with a return policy when the seller cannot demonstrate carrier compatibility or battery condition.
