Redis proxy vs. native Valkey support: which migration approach fits your stack?

Choose native Valkey when you are replacing Redis OSS and your source version, persistence format, commands, modules, scripts and client behavior are compatible. Choose a Redis proxy when the immediate problem is traffic management—routing requests, mirroring traffic, or isolating workloads—rather than moving and reconciling data. A proxy can send requests to another backend, but that does not prove the second store contains the same keys or accepted every write.

AWS users have a third decision: an ElastiCache engine upgrade or an online migration from an EC2-hosted source. Those procedures have separate prerequisites and limitations. Whichever route you select, test real commands, topology behavior, writes during cutover, authentication, reconnects and failover before production.

The three approaches at a glance

Decision axis Native Valkey migration Redis proxy layer AWS-managed path
Primary purpose Replace the Redis-compatible engine while retaining the application and data model Route, mirror or separate traffic among configured upstreams Upgrade an existing ElastiCache cluster or move an EC2-hosted source into ElastiCache
Version and data-format fit Verify source version plus RDB/AOF compatibility. Valkey documents compatibility with Redis OSS 7.2 and earlier; Redis Community Edition 7.4 and later produce incompatible data files. Protocol support does not remove backend data-format or application-compatibility requirements. Verify the documented source and target versions and the deployment prerequisites for the selected ElastiCache procedure.
How data moves Snapshot copy, replication setup or selected-key migration Request routing and mirroring; neither is, by itself, a data-copy or reconciliation process AWS online migration or backup/restore, depending on the source and target path
Client impact Check commands, modules, scripts, configuration, persistence assumptions and client libraries Check RESP mode, recognized commands, synthesized HELLO fields, cluster behavior and routing failures Check target topology, configuration, AWS networking and procedure-specific restrictions
Main trade-off Engine replacement can require downtime or workload-specific replication planning Adds a network component with its own behavior, capacity and failure modes Reduces some operational work, but only when the deployment matches AWS requirements

The official documentation does not establish a universal performance or cost winner. Measure your own command mix, payload sizes, latency objectives, failure behavior and operating costs.

What “native Valkey” means in this decision

Native migration changes the server that stores and executes the data. The application continues to use a Redis-compatible API, but the destination is Valkey rather than a proxy in front of the existing engine. The approach is appropriate when you want the destination to be the system of record and can validate compatibility before moving production traffic.

Valkey’s migration guide is the authoritative starting point: Valkey migration guide. It documents compatibility with Redis OSS 7.2 and earlier. It also states that “Redis Community Edition (CE) version 7.4 and later produce data files that are not compatible with Valkey.” The guide therefore makes the exact source version and persistence format a gate, not a detail to check after copying a file. If your source is a version not covered by those statements, treat compatibility as unestablished until you verify it in the current Valkey documentation and in a test environment.

Inventory the application contract

Engine compatibility is more than whether a basic GET and SET work. Record the complete behavior that production depends on:

  • Commands, transactions, pipelines, blocking operations, streams, Pub/Sub and expiration semantics.
  • Modules, Lua or other scripts, functions, key-space notifications and any server-side extensions.
  • Client-library version, connection pooling, TLS, authentication, timeouts, retry policy and reconnect behavior.
  • Standalone, sentinel or clustered topology assumptions, including redirect handling and hash-slot logic.
  • Persistence mode and file type (RDB, AOF or both), backup schedules and restore procedures.
  • Operational commands used by monitoring, deployment automation and incident runbooks.

Keep this inventory as a test list. A migration that passes a smoke test but omits a rarely used script or administrative command is not complete.

Native Valkey migration methods

The Valkey guide describes three practical methods for standalone instances. Choose among them according to your tolerance for downtime, write loss and operational complexity.

Snapshot copy

Snapshot migration is described as easy and fast, but it requires the destination to load the copied snapshot. That creates a service interruption while the source is shut down or writes are otherwise stopped and while Valkey loads the data. Writes made after the snapshot—or while active clients still reach the source—can be lost unless you deliberately quiesce the workload.

  1. Confirm that the source version and its RDB format are compatible with the Valkey destination. Do not use this method for a Redis CE 7.4-or-later data file without an explicitly documented compatible path.
  2. Schedule a maintenance window sized for snapshot creation, transfer, destination loading and application reconnection.
  3. Stop new writes and disconnect active connections before taking the final snapshot. This prevents clients from changing the source after the point-in-time copy.
  4. Create and transfer the snapshot using your existing, integrity-checked storage process. Preserve permissions and protect the file because it contains the dataset.
  5. Start Valkey with the copied data, monitor loading and verify key counts, representative values, expirations, streams and other application-specific invariants.
  6. Point clients at Valkey, reconnect them and watch errors, latency and write behavior before ending the maintenance window.

The method is attractive for a small dataset or a planned outage. It is a poor fit when writes must continue or when loading time is longer than the acceptable interruption.

Replication setup

Replication reduces the need for a single large stop-and-copy event, but it requires careful sequencing and a cutover plan. Establish the Valkey instance as a replica according to the migration guide, allow it to catch up, and monitor replication lag while the source continues serving traffic. Before promotion, stop or fence writes, confirm the destination has received the final data, promote the Valkey side and redirect clients.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The guide does not make replication automatically lossless for every topology. Your plan must define how to detect lag, what happens to writes during the final handoff, how clients discover the new endpoint and how to roll back if verification fails. Test the exact replication and promotion commands in a disposable environment first.

Selected-key migration

Moving selected keys is useful when you are splitting workloads, migrating a namespace or reducing the size of an initial cutover. Define the key set deterministically, copy values with their types and remaining expiration times, and verify each category of object. During the transition, decide whether the source remains writable, whether the application reads from one side or both, and how updates to already-migrated keys are handled. A key list without an update policy can leave the two stores divergent even when the initial copy is correct.

What a Redis proxy actually provides

A proxy sits between clients and one or more configured Redis-compatible upstreams. Envoy’s Redis architecture and filter documentation describe routing commands to clusters and mirroring requests: Envoy Redis architecture and Envoy Redis proxy.

Routing is traffic control, not data migration

Routing can direct a namespace, tenant, shard or class of request to a selected backend. This is valuable when you need to isolate workloads, introduce a new cluster gradually or keep a stable client endpoint while changing destinations. It does not copy existing keys. If the new backend must contain historical data, perform a documented snapshot, replication or key-level transfer separately and reconcile the result.

Mirroring is observational

Envoy documents shadowing as “fire and forget”: it sends the request to the shadow cluster but does not wait for that cluster’s response before returning the primary response. A successful primary response therefore says nothing about whether the mirrored request succeeded, was rejected, timed out or produced an equivalent result. Use mirroring to expose a candidate backend to real command traffic and collect independent verification signals, not as an acknowledgment protocol or consistency guarantee.

RESP behavior must be tested through the listener

Envoy selects RESP behavior at the proxy listener. It does not transparently reshape every RESP2 and RESP3 response structure. The proxy also synthesizes parts of the HELLO response. Clients or middleware that inspect server identity, version, connection ID or negotiated protocol can therefore behave differently through Envoy than when connected directly to a server.

Before adoption, test the actual client library and command set through the configured listener. Include arrays, maps, push messages, errors, scripts, transactions and commands whose response shape differs between RESP versions. Confirm cluster redirects, timeouts, connection limits and behavior when an upstream is unavailable. The proxy adds a hop, so capacity planning must include its connection pools, CPU, memory, network bandwidth and high-availability design.

When AWS managed migration is the better fit

AWS provides separate procedures for managed ElastiCache deployments. An in-place engine upgrade is different from online migration into a new ElastiCache target; neither should be treated as a generic proxy or a universal Valkey conversion.

In-place ElastiCache engine upgrade

AWS says supported upgrades from Redis OSS 5.0.6 and later can proceed without downtime, subject to the service’s current support matrix and the exact cluster configuration. The AWS FAQ reports that upgrades from versions earlier than 5.0.6 can encounter 30–60 seconds of failover while DNS propagates. That is a documented procedural range, not a performance benchmark and not a promise for every cluster. Verify the current FAQ and the cluster’s eligibility before communicating a downtime commitment: AWS ElastiCache FAQ.

Online migration from EC2 to ElastiCache

For a self-managed Redis OSS or Valkey source on EC2, AWS documents an online migration procedure. Read the preparation requirements before creating the target: AWS migration preparation and AWS online migration.

The documented target requirements include Multi-AZ, sufficient memory, matching shard counts and compatible configuration. The procedure is not supported for ElastiCache serverless caches or r6gd node-type clusters. Confirm networking, security groups, authentication, parameter groups, engine versions and topology before scheduling a cutover. If the target cannot satisfy the prerequisites, use another migration design rather than trying to force the online workflow.

A practical decision path

  1. Identify the desired end state. If Valkey should become the sole engine and the application can be made compatible, evaluate native migration. If you need traffic steering, parallel observation or backend isolation, evaluate a proxy. If the destination is ElastiCache, determine whether an in-place upgrade or EC2 online migration applies.
  2. Pin the source version and persistence format. Record the exact Redis OSS or Redis CE release, RDB/AOF mode and topology. Apply Valkey’s stated 7.2-and-earlier compatibility guidance and the 7.4-and-later data-file warning to that evidence.
  3. Choose a data movement method. Select snapshot copy when a planned outage and possible write freeze are acceptable; replication when you need a shorter final handoff and can manage lag; selected keys when migrating a defined namespace. Do not count proxy mirroring as the copy step.
  4. Map client and protocol assumptions. Test commands, modules, scripts, authentication, RESP mode, cluster redirects, retries, reconnects and monitoring commands against the destination or proxy endpoint.
  5. Define verification and rollback. Specify which keys, types, expirations, streams, counters and application transactions must match, who declares success and how clients return to the source if the destination fails.
  6. Run a non-production rehearsal. AWS recommends testing migration procedures outside production. Use production-like data shape and command traffic, then record observed lag, load time, error classes and recovery steps.

Production test plan

A migration is ready only when the workload—not just the server process—has passed the checks below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Command and data verification

  • Replay every command family in the inventory, including scripts, transactions, pipelines, streams, Pub/Sub and blocking operations.
  • Compare representative keys by type, value, TTL and encoding. Include empty, expired, very large and recently updated keys.
  • Validate counters, sorted-set scores, stream IDs, consumer-group state and any module-owned structures your application uses.
  • Check persistence and restart behavior on the destination, not merely its in-memory responses.

Connection and topology checks

  • Exercise authentication, TLS, pool initialization, idle timeout handling, reconnect backoff and client-side error classification.
  • Force cluster redirects and node or proxy failures. Confirm that clients recover without duplicate writes or silently dropped commands.
  • If Envoy is present, test the listener’s RESP setting, synthesized HELLO fields, recognized command set, route selection and mirror failure visibility.
  • Measure latency and throughput with your actual payload sizes and concurrency. No official source establishes a general performance advantage for either architecture.

Cutover and rollback rehearsal

  1. Announce a precise write-freeze or handoff point and identify the operator responsible for enforcing it.
  2. Capture final source health, replication lag or snapshot identity, plus a verification sample.
  3. Switch the client endpoint, restart or refresh pools as required, and monitor errors, latency, reconnects and write acknowledgments.
  4. Run application-level reads and writes, then compare the verification sample and critical invariants.
  5. Keep the source protected from new writes until the acceptance window closes. If acceptance fails, stop destination writes, redirect clients using the rehearsed procedure and reconcile any writes made during the trial.

For AWS-specific procedures, follow the current migration guidance and service limits in addition to this application test plan. AWS’s migration discussion and troubleshooting guidance is available at AWS re:Post guidance on upgrading Redis to Valkey.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Corrective action
Valkey refuses to load the copied persistence file Source release or file format is outside the documented compatibility range Stop using the file-based path; verify the release, choose replication or key migration, and test the replacement method.
Destination starts with fewer or older values Writes continued after the snapshot or replication had not caught up Quiesce clients, measure lag, establish a final synchronization point and repeat verification.
Application fails only through the proxy RESP negotiation, response-shape assumptions or synthesized HELLO fields differ Pin and test the listener protocol, update the client or bypass the proxy for incompatible traffic.
Mirror appears healthy but data differs Shadow requests are fire-and-forget and their responses are not authoritative Collect independent acknowledgments, compare keys and types, and use a real reconciliation process.
ElastiCache online migration cannot be started Target topology or node type does not meet AWS prerequisites Review Multi-AZ, memory, shard-count and configuration requirements; serverless and r6gd targets require another supported design.
Users see a brief outage during an AWS upgrade Source version is earlier than 5.0.6 or the cluster encounters a failover condition Check the exact source version and current AWS behavior, schedule a tested maintenance window and do not promise zero downtime without eligibility confirmation.

How to make the final choice

Select native Valkey when engine replacement is the goal, the source and persistence format pass compatibility checks, and you can execute a controlled snapshot, replication or key migration. This gives Valkey direct ownership of the data without an extra request-routing tier.

Select a proxy when routing, mirroring, gradual exposure or workload separation is the primary requirement. Design it as production infrastructure: provide capacity and high availability, document its protocol behavior, and build data verification outside the mirror path.

Select an AWS-managed procedure when your source and target match the relevant ElastiCache path. In-place upgrades and EC2 online migration have different prerequisites, and unsupported deployment types cannot be made eligible by adding a proxy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest migration plan is therefore stack-specific: pin versions, inventory behavior, move data with a method that matches your write and downtime constraints, test through the endpoint clients will use, and define rollback before the first production write.
