Valkey documents compatibility with Redis OSS 7.2 and earlier, while later Valkey releases add features of their own. Redis promotes capabilities and commercial offerings beyond that common core. KeyDB documents a multithreaded Redis alternative, but the available documentation is too old to establish its current maintenance or support position.
The safest choice is conditional: inventory the exact commands, modules, clients, scripts, persistence settings, replication model, and cluster behavior your application uses; then run migration and workload tests on the precise versions and deployment type you would operate.

The practical decision in one view
Choose Valkey when you want an open-source, BSD-licensed Redis-compatible engine and your validation shows that its documented Redis OSS 7.2-and-earlier baseline covers your application. Choose Redis when a required capability, commercial feature, support arrangement, or managed-service integration is specific to the Redis distribution you intend to run. Treat KeyDB as an option for a tested multithreaded workload, not as a current-life-cycle recommendation: the available KeyDB material describes its design and feature parity but is several years old.
Performance does not settle the choice by itself. Redis publishes comparative claims, including figures in its own materials, and those statements are vendor-authored rather than independent three-engine tests. A benchmark using your commands, values, persistence mode, topology, clients, and target versions is the only reliable way to choose on throughput or latency.

What Redis-compatible actually means
Compatibility is not one promise. It has layers, and an application can pass a basic connection test while still failing during migration or production traffic.
Command and protocol compatibility
At the narrowest level, a client can connect, authenticate, issue familiar commands, and receive the response types it expects. Valkey’s migration documentation identifies Redis OSS 7.2 and earlier as its compatibility baseline. That is useful for scoping an investigation, not a guarantee that every command introduced elsewhere, every edge-case error, or every administrative command behaves identically.
Data structures and semantics
Applications depend on more than command names. They rely on expiry timing, ordering, score precision, transaction behavior, script execution, stream-consumer semantics, blocking operations, error messages, and limits. A replacement that accepts a command but differs in a boundary condition can still break a queue, lock, cache invalidation path, or rate limiter.

Modules are a frequent migration boundary. A module may have a different build, version, license, persistence format, or managed-service availability on the target engine. Inventory module commands separately from core commands, and test module data during backup, restore, replication, failover, and upgrade exercises.
Clients, scripts, and tooling
Client libraries often detect server versions, issue feature probes, or depend on exact error text. Lua scripts and application-side command wrappers can hide dependencies that a simple command list misses. Include connection pools, ORM adapters, migration utilities, exporters, backup tools, and administrative scripts in the compatibility review.

Persistence, replication, and topology
Compatibility also covers how data is written to disk, restored, replicated, promoted, and sharded. A migration can be command-compatible yet operationally unsuitable if your recovery-point objective, replica lag tolerance, Sentinel workflow, or Cluster resharding process changes. Validate the actual persistence format and topology behavior of the versions you will deploy.
How the three projects differ
Valkey: open-source compatibility with an explicit migration baseline
Valkey describes itself as an open-source, BSD-licensed in-memory data-structure store. Its documented uses include a primary database, cache, message broker, and streaming engine. The introduction lists strings and other core data types, replication, Lua scripting, transactions, persistence, Sentinel, and Cluster.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The migration documentation says Valkey keeps compatibility with Redis OSS 7.2 and earlier while adding Valkey-specific features and improvements in later releases. Read that wording as a starting boundary: an application built around the documented common core may be straightforward to port, but features added after the baseline require explicit checks. The farther your deployment depends on modules, vendor tooling, or newer product capabilities, the less useful a generic drop-in assumption becomes.
Redis: a distribution with vendor-described extensions and offerings
Redis remains the reference point for the compatibility discussion, and Valkey originated as a fork of Redis 7.2.4, according to Redis’s March 11, 2026 overview. Since that fork, the projects have diverged. Redis’s official comparison page presents capabilities beyond the common Redis-compatible core and describes enterprise offerings.
Those comparisons are valuable for identifying questions to ask, but they are Redis’s own product claims. They are not an independent feature audit or a neutral benchmark. Tie every decision to the exact Redis edition, release, module set, license terms, and support contract under consideration.

KeyDB: multithreading is the documented differentiator, with evidence limitations
KeyDB documentation presents a multithreaded Redis alternative and describes feature parity. Multithreading may be relevant when a workload is limited by single-thread command execution, but the benefit depends on command mix, contention, networking, persistence, and deployment shape. The available documentation is several years old; it does not establish current release activity, maintenance responsiveness, support coverage, or suitability for a new production system. Obtain and verify current project evidence before committing.

Compatibility checklist before you migrate
Build a versioned inventory rather than testing only a health check. Record the production server version, client-library version, module versions, and managed-service engine version if applicable.
- Commands: export or observe every command used in normal traffic, background jobs, maintenance scripts, and failure handling. Include commands issued only during deploys, backups, restores, and failovers.
- Data types: list strings, hashes, lists, sets, sorted sets, streams, geospatial values, probabilistic structures, and module-owned types actually stored.
- Scripts and transactions: collect Lua scripts, MULTI/EXEC or transaction wrappers, optimistic-locking patterns, pipelines, blocking reads, and distributed-lock code.
- Modules: identify module names, versions, indexes, custom commands, persistence requirements, and whether the target deployment can load them.
- Clients: record language runtimes, drivers, connection-pool settings, TLS and authentication options, retry behavior, cluster discovery, and server-version feature detection.
- Durability: document snapshotting, append-only logging, fsync policy, restore procedures, backup retention, and the recovery-point and recovery-time objectives you must meet.
- Topology: capture primary-replica counts, Sentinel or Cluster use, shard and slot layout, replica promotion rules, resharding steps, DNS or endpoint behavior, and cross-zone or cross-region replication.
- Observability: list latency, memory, hit-rate, replication-lag, persistence, and failover metrics plus the alerts and dashboards operators rely on.
A staged migration procedure
- Freeze the baseline. Write down the source engine and exact version, configuration, data size, key-expiry distribution, traffic rate, command proportions, module set, and topology. Save representative production-like data after removing secrets and regulated content.
- Classify dependencies. Separate core commands from modules, scripts, client conveniences, administrative tooling, and managed-service features. Mark each dependency as required, optional, or removable before migration.
- Compare against the target version. Use the target engine’s compatibility documentation and release notes to check each command, response, limit, module, persistence mode, and topology operation. For Valkey, begin with the documented Redis OSS 7.2-and-earlier baseline, then inspect Valkey-specific additions and any features newer than that baseline.
- Run protocol and semantic tests. Execute automated tests for data writes, reads, expiry, transactions, scripts, blocking commands, streams, error handling, reconnects, and cluster redirections. Assert response values and types, not merely successful connections.
- Test durability and recovery. Create backups, restore them into an isolated target, restart nodes, simulate replica loss, promote a replica, and verify data loss against your stated recovery objectives. Include module-owned data and large keys.
- Replay representative traffic. Use the same key distribution, payload sizes, hot-key ratio, concurrency, pipelining, and read/write mix as production. Measure p50, p95, and p99 latency, throughput, CPU, memory, network, persistence overhead, and replication lag.
- Exercise the operating model. Practice upgrades, rollback, failover, resharding, certificate rotation, access-policy changes, alert response, and capacity expansion with the target’s actual tooling or managed service.
- Canary and observe. Migrate a low-risk tenant, shard, or read path first. Compare error rates, latency, cache hit rate, eviction behavior, replication health, and application outcomes before increasing traffic.
- Keep a rollback path. Define how writes are drained or dual-written, how DNS or endpoints are reverted, how data created on the target is reconciled, and which operator has authority to stop the rollout.
Feature and operations questions to answer
Do you need only the common in-memory core?
If your application uses basic strings, hashes, lists, sets, sorted sets, expiry, transactions, scripting, replication, and persistence, compatibility testing may be relatively contained. It is still necessary to test semantics and operations, but you are less exposed to product-specific extensions.
Do you need search, JSON, time series, or other extensions?
Do not infer support from a familiar command prefix. Verify the module or feature’s implementation, version, persistence, replication, cluster behavior, client support, and managed availability on each candidate. Redis’s comparison material describes additional capabilities, but the collected evidence does not provide a neutral, exhaustive three-way matrix.
How will failover work?
Valkey documentation lists Sentinel and Cluster capabilities. Confirm whether your client supports the target’s discovery and redirection behavior, how promotions are triggered, what quorum and timeout settings apply, and how operators observe and test a failed node. The same product label does not guarantee identical defaults or runbooks across distributions and service providers.

Will managed hosting change the result?
The AWS ElastiCache User Guide covers Valkey and Redis OSS options, making managed deployment a legitimate part of the comparison. A managed service can reduce patching and failover work, but it also adds provider-specific engine versions, parameter limits, backup behavior, networking, authentication, maintenance windows, monitoring, and regional availability. Test the service’s behavior rather than assuming that a self-managed installation and a hosted offering are interchangeable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to benchmark without misleading yourself
A single requests-per-second number cannot rank these engines for every application. The useful benchmark is a controlled comparison of the versions and configurations you would actually deploy.
- Workload shape: reproduce read/write proportions, command mix, payload size, key cardinality, hot-key concentration, expiry rate, pipelines, transactions, scripts, and blocking operations.
- Deployment shape: use the same number and type of nodes, CPU and memory limits, network path, storage class, replication factor, shard count, and client connection count.
- Durability settings: benchmark with the persistence and fsync settings required in production. An in-memory-only test cannot answer a durable deployment question.
- Measurements: record throughput, p50/p95/p99 latency, timeout and error rates, CPU saturation, memory fragmentation, network bandwidth, persistence latency, replica lag, failover time, and recovery behavior.
- Warm-up and repetition: warm caches, run multiple trials, vary concurrency, and report variability. Include cold-start, restart, and resharding tests when those events matter operationally.
- Version labeling: publish the exact engine, client, module, operating-system, configuration, and benchmark-tool versions with every result.
Redis’s published performance figures and the March 11, 2026 Redis overview should be read in that context: they are Redis-reported comparisons, not a neutral, current three-engine benchmark. They can suggest hypotheses, but they cannot replace your test.
Licensing, support, and maintenance checks
License scope
Valkey is described as BSD-licensed. For Redis and KeyDB, check the exact distribution, release, modules, and permitted deployment model with your legal and procurement teams. Do not assume that a project name describes every bundled component or hosted service. License obligations can differ between the server, modules, client libraries, and provider-specific additions.

Assess release cadence, security advisories, issue response, documented upgrade paths, client-library support, and the availability of engineers who can operate the system. The available KeyDB documentation is stale enough that it cannot establish present-day maintenance or support status; current evidence is a prerequisite, not an optional detail.
Best Value
Commercial support
Redis’s materials describe enterprise offerings. If you need contractual response times, security notifications, architecture assistance, or a supported module portfolio, compare those terms directly with the open-source and managed alternatives available to you. Keep marketing claims separate from contractually defined service levels.
Choosing by workload and risk
Select Valkey when compatibility and open licensing lead
Valkey is the most direct candidate when your application fits the documented Redis OSS 7.2-and-earlier compatibility baseline, you value its BSD license, and your team can validate the target’s modules and operational tooling. Require a staged migration test before treating it as a replacement.
Select Redis when a product-specific capability or support model is decisive
Redis is the appropriate choice when a required feature, module, enterprise control, support arrangement, or managed integration is tied to the Redis distribution and has been verified for your exact edition and version. Treat Redis’s comparative feature and performance statements as vendor-authored evidence and confirm them in your environment.

Investigate KeyDB only with fresh technical evidence
KeyDB’s documented multithreaded design may justify a focused proof of concept for a workload that could benefit from concurrent execution. Do not make a production commitment until you have verified current releases, security maintenance, support options, client compatibility, persistence and replication behavior, and benchmark results under your workload.
Quick Recap
Common migration mistakes and their fixes
- Mistake: treating a successful PING as compatibility. Fix: replay commands, scripts, modules, error paths, and failover operations.
- Mistake: testing only the default configuration. Fix: reproduce production persistence, authentication, TLS, memory limits, eviction, replication, and cluster settings.
- Mistake: ignoring client behavior. Fix: test the exact driver and pool versions, including reconnects, retries, cluster discovery, and timeout handling.
- Mistake: assuming module portability. Fix: verify module availability, version, data migration, persistence, replication, and managed-service support separately.
- Mistake: using vendor benchmark numbers as universal rankings. Fix: build a workload-specific benchmark and report configuration and percentiles.
- Mistake: overlooking rollback data flow. Fix: rehearse write draining, endpoint reversal, reconciliation, and recovery before the canary.
- Mistake: treating old KeyDB documentation as current proof. Fix: obtain current release and maintenance evidence before evaluating it for new deployments.
A compact go/no-go checklist
- Every production command and response behavior has a target-engine test.
- All modules, scripts, clients, and administrative tools have an owner and compatibility result.
- Backup, restore, restart, promotion, failover, and resharding tests meet stated objectives.
- Benchmark results cover the intended versions, topology, persistence, payloads, and concurrency.
- License, support, security-maintenance, and managed-service terms are approved for the exact distribution.
- A canary, monitoring plan, rollback procedure, and data-reconciliation process are rehearsed.
