Verdict: The REDFLY C8N is not a laptop or an independent computer. It is a phone-dependent companion that adds an 8-inch display, 80-key keyboard, touchpad and ports to certain period Windows Mobile and BlackBerry smartphones. It can make a compatible phone more comfortable for typing and viewing, but it cannot run applications, browse the web or store files without the phone providing the operating system, software and data.
What the REDFLY C8N actually does
Celio designed the C8N as a small-laptop-shaped terminal for a supported smartphone. REDFLY software runs on the phone; the C8N supplies the larger screen and physical controls. The phone connects by its USB cable or Bluetooth, then applications and data remain on the phone.
That architecture explains both the appeal and the limitation. You can get a more usable typing surface than a phone offered in the late 2000s, but the C8N has no processor, onboard memory, storage or operating system of its own. A disconnected C8N is not a functional general-purpose computer.

The following figures come from Celio’s REDFLY Mobile Companion C8N/C8V user guide. They are published specifications, not measurements from a current test.

The guide also describes an optional media cable for the media port and says the C8N can charge some phones over USB when the phone supports that behavior. Neither statement guarantees that a suitable cable or charging behavior will be available with a used unit.

Connection requires REDFLY software on the phone and either a wired USB connection or Bluetooth. This documentation does not establish compatibility with current Android or iPhone models. Before buying, identify the exact phone model, operating-system version and software package, then confirm that the REDFLY application can still be installed and used on that phone.
How a typical connection works
- Install the REDFLY software on a phone from the supported legacy platform list.
- Use the phone’s USB cable for a wired connection, or pair the phone and C8N over Bluetooth.
- Start the REDFLY software and connect the phone according to its prompts.
- Use the C8N’s display, keyboard and touchpad to control applications that continue running on the phone.
For video on an external display, the guide describes the media port and an optional REDFLY media cable. The listed VGA output is 800 × 600 pixels.

What it was like compared with alternatives
Against using the phone alone
The C8N offers a much larger 800 × 480 workspace and a full physical keyboard, which can help with extended text entry and viewing. The trade-off is carrying a second device, connecting it, and keeping both the companion and phone functional.
Against a period netbook
A netbook is an independent computer with its own processor, storage, operating system and connectivity. The C8N is lighter than many small laptops at its stated 2.0 lb, but it cannot replace a netbook’s standalone capabilities. The relevant comparison is whether you already own a compatible phone and value a keyboard/display accessory more than independent computing.

Against a modern phone accessory
Do not assume that a contemporary desktop-mode accessory will work with the C8N. Its documented software and phone interfaces belong to the Windows Mobile and BlackBerry era.

“Eight hours under normal use” is a manufacturer rating from the guide, not a guarantee for a used C8N. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity with age, and the guide does not provide a current health figure. Current stock, official support, replacement parts, software availability and compatible cables were not established. A 2011 forum participant reportedly said the Mobile Companion line had been discontinued; that is anecdotal historical context, not an official current announcement.

Used-buying checklist
Ask the seller to demonstrate the unit with the exact phone you intend to use. Check each of the following before paying:
- Model identification: confirm that it is a C8N, not another REDFLY variant.
- Screen and hinge: look for cracks, dead areas, discoloration and loose hinges.
- Keyboard and touchpad: test every key, both touchpad buttons and cursor movement.
- Battery: verify that it charges and holds power; an eight-hour rating does not describe an aged battery.
- Power supply: confirm that the included adapter is compatible with the guide’s 9 VDC, 2.5 A requirement.
- Ports: test USB, VGA, the media port and the AC connector if you need them.
- Phone connection: complete a wired or Bluetooth connection using your own supported phone, rather than relying on a seller’s general claim.
- Software and cables: establish that REDFLY software and the required phone USB cable are obtainable; treat the optional media cable as a separate availability question.
Historical price and what it means now
Laptop Mag reported an announced price of $299 in 2008-era coverage. That figure is a launch-era historical price, not a present-day used-market value. Because current listings, condition and battery supply vary, judge any purchase by the complete cost of a working C8N, adapter, cables and compatible phone/software rather than by the old $299 number.
Who should consider one?
It may make sense if you:
- Already own a phone from the documented Windows Mobile or BlackBerry compatibility range.
- Have a specific need for a physical keyboard and larger screen for that legacy phone.
- Can verify the software, cable and connection before purchase.
- Accept restoration work and uncertain battery life.
Skip it if you:
- Need a standalone computer or modern smartphone compatibility.
- Expect current manufacturer support or readily available replacement parts.
- Cannot test the C8N with the intended phone.
- Want reliable battery performance without replacing an old battery.
Bottom line
The REDFLY C8N is best understood as a historical phone dock with a screen and keyboard, not as a laptop. Its specifications are distinctive, but its usefulness today depends almost entirely on finding a working compatible legacy phone, REDFLY software, the right cable and a healthy enough battery. Buy only after verifying that complete chain.
