The user later reported that Airbnb deemed the request ineligible. The image’s origin, the host’s intent and the platform’s decision have not been independently verified in the available reporting.
What the Reddit user said happened
In a post on r/isthisAI on September 29, 2026, a user said an Airbnb host requested A$1,700 for damage and submitted a photograph that appeared to show an overflowing toilet. The user questioned whether the image was genuine, writing that “It feels inconsistent with AI qualities like the water dripping from the toilet but no splashes. the entire house should flood at this point.”

The poster also said they had not used toilet paper during the stay, but did not claim certainty about what happened: “I did not even use toilet paper during my stay so I coudln’t have left those damages but I am wondering if someone else might have and those are real.” That is the poster’s account, not an independently established cause of the alleged damage.

A PC Gamer report published October 2, 2026 described the image as AI-generated and said Gemini detected a SynthID watermark. The reporting available here does not include a forensic assessment or other independent verification of the image’s provenance, so it does not establish that the host knowingly submitted a fabricated image.

- Includes a PerforMAX fill valve and 2 in. flapper kit designed to restore the performance of toilets with a 2 in. flush valve by replacing worn or outdated components.
In an update quoted by PC Gamer, the Reddit user said Airbnb resolved the case and deemed the reimbursement request ineligible. The user added that there was a floor below the rental and argued that several inches of water would have flooded it. No Airbnb case record or platform statement is available here to independently confirm the outcome or explain the decision.
What renters can take from the dispute
PC Gamer’s general advice was to photograph and video a rental before leaving. A dated record of a space’s condition can help a renter explain a disagreement, but it is not a guarantee that a platform will resolve a claim in the renter’s favor. This case alone also does not establish how Airbnb evaluates reimbursement requests or what evidence it requires.
