Reddit plans to stop updating its RSS feeds on November 13, 2026, and end remaining public Data API access by March 2027, according to a September 30, 2026 report by TechCrunch. If you follow Reddit communities in a feed reader, changing apps is not expected to preserve those updates: the planned change concerns Reddit’s feed sources, not RSS readers generally.
These are reported future dates, not completed shutdowns. Reddit’s original September 30 announcement could not be independently reviewed for this article, so the scope and any exceptions should be confirmed against Reddit’s notice if it becomes available.

What Reddit’s reported shutdown means
RSS is a web-feed format that lets users and applications receive updates from a site. The reported plan is about Reddit’s RSS feeds; it does not mean RSS itself is ending. TechCrunch attributes the decision to Reddit’s concern that RSS has become a “common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse.”

Reddit users who subscribe to subreddit or other Reddit feeds through a general-purpose reader should expect those Reddit sources to stop providing updates after November 13, 2026, if the reported schedule holds. Moving to another RSS reader would not address a shutdown of the source feeds.

Reddit also reportedly said: “We know RSS has been a beloved part of the open web for a long time, and we’re grateful to everyone who used it to stay connected to Reddit.” Both statements are Reddit’s, as quoted in TechCrunch’s September 30 report.
RSS feeds and public API: what changes, and when
| Access route | What it provides | Reported end date | Who is affected | Reported transition option |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit RSS feeds | Reddit updates delivered to feed readers | November 13, 2026 | People following Reddit through RSS, including moderators using RSS for alerts | Discord Relay is suggested for moderator alerts; no replacement is reported for feeds outside a moderator’s own community |
| Remaining public Data API access | Programmatic access to Reddit data for apps and services | By March 2027 | Developers and services using the public API | No general replacement is identified in the report |
The dates and scope in the table are from TechCrunch’s September 30, 2026 report; the reported announcement describes planned future changes. The report does not establish whether approved applications will have exceptions or whether the scope may change.
What Reddit users and moderators can do
If you use an RSS reader for Reddit
- Identify the Reddit subscriptions you rely on and note which information or alerts matter most to you.
- Plan for those Reddit feeds to stop updating after the reported November 13 date. Subscriptions to other sites’ feeds are not affected by this Reddit-specific plan.
- Do not assume a different reader app can continue fetching Reddit updates if Reddit stops providing the feeds.
If you moderate a Reddit community
TechCrunch reports that Reddit recommends Discord Relay, a Devvit app, for moderator alert workflows. That is a moderation-focused option, not a drop-in replacement for ordinary RSS subscriptions to communities you do not moderate. Check the app’s current setup and capabilities before relying on it for a specific alert workflow.
What the reported API end means for developers
Reddit’s official Developer Platform & Accessing Reddit Data help page describes the Data API as programmatic access for approved developers. It says API services are rate-limited and that commercial use of developer tools requires Reddit’s permission. It also says commercial display of Reddit content with ads is prohibited.
Reddit’s Data API Terms grant a limited, nonexclusive, nontransferable and revocable license subject to compliance. The terms allow Reddit to set API limits and reserve the right to charge fees for future use; commercial access and some other uses require a separate agreement. Those terms describe conditions of access, but do not themselves confirm the reported March 2027 shutdown date.
Developers should review Reddit’s current developer documentation and app-registration instructions for any migration or registration requirements. Reddit’s registration page has shown inconsistent incentive-deadline information in available versions, so no deadline or bounty amount can be treated here as confirmed.

How this differs from Reddit’s 2023 API changes
Reddit’s April 18, 2023 announcement said the Data API would remain available for “reasonable and appropriate use cases” through the Developer Platform and introduced a premium access point for third parties needing higher limits and broader usage rights. That was the position at the time; it does not override the later shutdown plan reported in 2026.

What is confirmed, and what is still unclear
TechCrunch published the RSS and API dates on September 30, 2026, attributing them to Reddit. Reddit’s primary announcement was not available for independent review here. That leaves the exact scope, possible exceptions for approved applications, and any subsequent revisions unresolved. Readers and developers should check Reddit’s own notice and current developer guidance for final implementation details.
