A promoted post that looks like breaking financial news is not proof that a publisher endorses an investment. In a June 4, 2026 report, Bitdefender Labs described Reddit ads impersonating the BBC, Financial Times and The Guardian to promote purported AI-powered investment platforms. Verify the company and its regulatory authorization independently; do not send money because an ad promises fast returns or urges immediate action.
What Bitdefender reported about the Reddit ads
Bitdefender Labs researchers Andrea Olariu and Emanuel Puscasu reported promoted Reddit posts styled as financial or breaking-news stories. The campaign impersonated the BBC, Financial Times and The Guardian, and promoted purported platforms named Wencoin STX, Warrior Coin AI and Nevo Coin. These names are reported scam examples, not legitimate investment recommendations. Bitdefender’s June 4, 2026 report describes cloned publisher designs, fabricated interviews and testimonials, fake profit screenshots, manipulated banking documents, fictional journalists, conspiracy claims and false urgency. It also describes at least one video that appeared to be a deepfake news segment.

The report is the direct evidence for this particular campaign. It does not establish that every ad, video or landing-page element was generated by AI, or measure what share of Reddit investment scam ads use generative AI. Broader regulator statistics below concern scams across social media or investment fraud generally; they do not verify this campaign or quantify Reddit-specific losses.
Warning signs to check before engaging
Publisher impersonation and suspicious domains
A logo, familiar page design or apparent news article can be copied. Check the domain character by character against the publisher’s real website, and search for the company independently rather than relying on a link in the ad. A news-style presentation is not evidence of a publisher’s endorsement.
Promises, testimonials and pressure
- Be skeptical of guaranteed or unusually high returns, dramatic claims about an AI algorithm, fabricated celebrity endorsements, testimonials and screenshots of profits.
- Watch for countdowns, “limited” registration claims, breaking-event hooks or pressure to act before you can verify the offer. The FBI lists urgency, dramatic price increases and promises to cover losses among warning signs of investment-club fraud. Its September 2025 public service announcement also reported at least a 300% increase in victim complaints referencing ramp-and-dump stock fraud in 2025 compared with 2024. That figure describes complaints observed by the FBI, not all fraud or Reddit ads.
- Claims that regulators or banks are suppressing a secret opportunity are not proof that the investment is genuine.
These tactics are warning signs, not a claim that every similar-looking advertisement is fraudulent. The combination of unverified identity, implausible claims and pressure to send funds is reason to stop and check.
How to check whether an investment platform is legitimate
- Leave the ad’s path. Search independently for the firm and its official website. Do not treat the ad, landing page or contact details it supplies as independent verification.
- Confirm authorization with the relevant regulator. Check whether the firm is authorized to offer the service in your country, using the regulator’s own records. The European Securities and Markets Authority’s May 2025 letter to Reddit and other platforms raised concerns about promotion of unauthorised financial services; it is not a finding that a specific Reddit ad broke the law. Read ESMA’s letter.
- Check identity and claims separately. Compare the domain with the real publisher or company site, then seek independent evidence for claims about performance, endorsements and technology. A copied news layout or a persuasive testimonial does not establish either authorization or returns.
- Do not send money while a material question is unresolved. If you cannot verify the firm’s identity and authorization through independent sources, do not rely on the ad’s assurances or urgency.
How to report a suspicious Reddit ad
- Open the ad’s overflow menu.
- Choose Report, select the reason that best fits, and submit the report. The menu labels and available reasons may vary by interface.
Reddit says reporting an ad also hides it and future ads from that advertiser account. See Reddit Help’s ad-reporting instructions.
If you sent money or shared account details
- Contact your bank or payment provider promptly and explain what happened. Ask what steps are available to protect the account or payment method.
- Report the incident to the appropriate authorities. In the United States, the FBI directs suspected investment-fraud victims to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), and the Federal Trade Commission accepts reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. These are US reporting channels; elsewhere, contact local authorities and the relevant financial regulator. The FBI’s guidance covers investment-club fraud reporting.
- Be wary of anyone who contacts you promising to recover lost funds for an upfront fee. The FTC says some investment-scam victims reported secondary losses to people claiming they could recover money. The FTC’s April 2026 data spotlight discusses these follow-on recovery pitches.
What the wider scam figures do—and do not—show
The FTC’s Consumer Sentinel Network figures give context for social-media scams, not Reddit in particular. In its 2026 data spotlight on reports about 2025, the FTC said nearly 30% of people who reported losing money to a scam said it started on social media, and reported social-media scam losses reached $2.1 billion. The FTC also reported $1.1 billion in losses to scams initiated on social media in 2025—more than half of the money reported lost to scams that year. These are reported losses, not a measure of unreported harm, and neither figure can be attributed to Reddit or to the campaign Bitdefender described.
