What has not been announced

When is RDR3 coming out?

Will Arthur Morgan be in RDR3?
There is no confirmation that Arthur Morgan will appear. Rockstar has not announced a cast or protagonist for a third Redemption game, so the same applies to John Marston, Dutch van der Linde, Sadie Adler, or any other RDR2 character.
Arthur’s fate in RDR2 also makes direct continuation a story question rather than a simple casting assumption. A future game could theoretically use a new character, an earlier period, a later period, or a different structure, but none of those possibilities is established fact. Do not describe Arthur’s return, a prequel starring another gang member, or a remake-style continuation as confirmed.
What Red Dead Redemption 2 actually offers
Story setting and premise
The US PlayStation product page places RDR2 in America in 1899, when the Wild West era is ending. It follows a sprawling outlaw story involving the Van der Linde gang. That setting explains the game’s tension: the gang’s way of life is being squeezed by organized law, expanding settlements, rail infrastructure, and changing technology.
The 1899 date is a documented RDR2 setting, not evidence about a future sequel. A later game could remain in the same period, move backward into an earlier frontier, or move forward into the twentieth century; no choice has been announced.
Story Mode
Story Mode is included in the Standard Edition identified on the US PlayStation listing. It is the single-player campaign returning players usually mean when they discuss Arthur Morgan, the Van der Linde gang, and the game’s main narrative.

Edition names and contents can differ by platform and region. Check the store page for your country before buying a digital copy or used physical disc, especially if you are moving from PS4 to PS5.
Red Dead Online
Rockstar’s official materials identify Red Dead Online as the game’s separate online experience. Rockstar describes a frontier world where you can establish a camp, play alone, or form a posse with other players.
The PC store lists several structured pursuits:
- Bounty Hunter: track and capture wanted targets.
- Trader: build a camp-based trading operation.
- Collector: search the frontier for valuable sets and objects.
- Moonshiner: operate an illicit distilling business.
- Naturalist: study wildlife and pursue the naturalist progression path.
These are RDR2 online roles. No equivalent RDR3 online system has been announced, and you should not assume that these roles, progression systems, or a shared-world service will transfer unchanged to a sequel.

Rockstar’s PC storefront lists minimum requirements that include 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB of memory, and 150 GB of disk space. Those are storefront minimums, not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution, loading time, or visual preset on every computer.
Before installing, leave additional free space for the launcher, temporary installation files, updates, and operating-system overhead. A system that technically meets a minimum can still need lower settings or produce an uneven experience depending on its processor, graphics hardware, drivers, storage speed, and background applications.
How the two games can be compared honestly

This is the strongest comparison supported by published information. A table claiming that RDR3 has a larger map, better graphics, new weapons, a particular protagonist, or a specific online economy would be speculation presented as fact.
What Dan Houser’s comments do—and do not—tell us
GamesRadar reported comments from Dan Houser on the Lex Fridman Podcast. Houser is a former Rockstar co-founder and a writer associated with both Redemption games. He reportedly said another Red Dead game “probably will happen,” but also described the two Redemption games as a cohesive arc and said: “I think it probably would be, in some ways, sadder if someone continued on Red Dead, because it was a cohesive two-game arc.”
That is an opinion from a former executive and writer, not a Rockstar production update. Houser’s comments do not identify a team, development stage, script, release window, platform, or returning actor. They also do not establish that he is involved in any future project.

The useful takeaway is limited: Houser believes another Red Dead game is plausible while recognizing that the existing two-game story has its own closure. Nothing in the reported remarks converts possibility into confirmation.
Why RDR2 remains the practical choice for returning players
It is a complete, documented game
RDR2 has a defined campaign, published edition information, and an established online mode. You can decide whether you want the narrative, the online frontier, or both without waiting for an unknown sequel.
It still has measurable commercial reach
Take-Two’s May 2026 investor presentation, citing Circana’s US retail tracking for video-game software from January 2018 through December 2025, ranked RDR2 as the number-three best-selling title in the United States over that eight-year period by both unit sales and dollar sales. The presentation did not publish a unit total for that ranking, so no specific sales number should be inferred from it.

The US PlayStation listing gives the PS4 release date as October 26, 2018 and says the PS4 version is playable on PS5, while warning that some PS4 features may be absent on the newer console. That note applies to the listed PlayStation edition; it should not be generalized to every platform or region.
A sensible replay plan in 2026
- Choose the mode first. Select Story Mode if you want Arthur Morgan’s campaign and the Van der Linde gang narrative. Choose Red Dead Online if your priority is camp development, solo play, posse sessions, or role progression.
- Verify the exact edition. On PlayStation, read the regional product listing and confirm whether the edition includes Story Mode and Red Dead Online. The US Standard Edition listing identifies both, but storefront contents can vary by region and platform.
- Check console compatibility. If you are using a PS5, confirm that the listing is the PS4 version playable on PS5 and read the warning about potentially missing PS4 features.
- Check PC capacity before downloading. Compare your computer with Rockstar’s listed minimums: 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB memory, and 150 GB of disk space. Keep extra storage free for installation and updates.
- Install updates before judging performance. Let the game and its launcher finish updating, then adjust graphics settings to your hardware. Meeting minimum requirements alone does not guarantee a particular performance level.

Common rumor traps
“A release year has leaked”
Unless Rockstar or Take-Two publishes the date, it is not confirmed. A leaked year can be outdated, fabricated, or based on an internal target that never becomes a public launch.
“Arthur is returning”
No cast has been announced. Character-return claims are especially unreliable when they rely on voice-actor comments, supposed casting documents, or fan interpretations of RDR2’s ending.
“A trailer proves the game is real”
Fan edits and concept videos can look official. Look for an official Rockstar or Take-Two publication, a verified product page, and consistent platform information before treating a video as an announcement.
“RDR3 will have the same online roles”
RDR2’s roles are documented for its online mode. A future game could redesign progression, use a different service model, or omit online play entirely. No RDR3 mode list exists to settle that question.

Companion materials for an RDR2 replay
Rockstar’s launch announcement identified Piggyback’s Red Dead Redemption 2 Complete Official Guide in Standard and Collector’s Editions. It is a legitimate physical companion for players returning to the released game. Edition names, stock, prices, and regional availability can change, so verify the current listing before ordering.
There is no supported RDR3 guide, game edition, merchandise listing, or platform bundle to recommend as a confirmed product. Avoid buying items advertised as official RDR3 products unless Rockstar or Take-Two has first announced the game and authenticated the release.
What would count as a real RDR3 update?
- A named announcement from Rockstar Games or Take-Two.
- An official product page identifying the game.
- A confirmed platform list or release window.
- A trailer published through an official channel.
