For the fastest improvement, let Red Dead Redemption 2’s in-game quality slider create a starting profile, then turn off MSAA and tune volumetric, reflection, and water settings with the built-in benchmark. Keep textures high when your graphics card has enough VRAM, test Vulkan and DirectX 12 on your own system, and change one group of options at a time so you can identify the source of a frame-rate drop or stutter.

Start with a benchmarkable baseline

Red Dead Redemption 2 has unusually large performance swings between open countryside, towns, storms, smoke, and scenes with water. A setting that looks inexpensive in a quiet field can become the limiting factor in Saint Denis or during a rainstorm. Build a repeatable baseline before chasing individual sliders.

  1. Set your display resolution and choose a frame-rate target that matches your monitor. A 60-fps target at 1080p is a different optimization problem from a 30-fps target at 4K.
  2. Open Settings > Graphics and use the quality slider once. Rockstar’s support guidance, updated April 30, 2024, says this slider analyzes the computer’s capabilities and adjusts background parameters for the selected resolution and the preference for performance or quality.
  3. Record the resulting values, run the complete benchmark, and note average frame rate and any obvious low-frame or hitching behavior.
  4. Make one related group of changes, run the benchmark again, and then verify the result in the location where you normally notice slowdowns.

The automatic profile is a starting point, not a guarantee. Tom’s Hardware found that the slider can choose different values for different graphics cards and can be counterproductive when a card is not represented correctly. Manual tuning is worthwhile when the automatic result leaves large frame-time spikes or an image-quality compromise you do not want.

The settings that usually deliver the largest gains

Disable MSAA before reducing textures

Multisample anti-aliasing is one of Rockstar’s first-listed controls for performance tuning. Set MSAA to Off before sacrificing texture quality. MSAA can consume substantial GPU time, while textures primarily consume video memory. If your card has adequate VRAM, lowering textures often produces a softer image without solving the main frame-rate limit.

Reduce volumetric quality and near-volumetric resolution

Volumetric effects draw fog, smoke, dust, snow, and shafts of light. They are especially expensive in weather, forests, interiors with haze, and scenes containing several light sources. Lower Volumetric Quality first, then reduce Near Volumetric Resolution if close fog and lighting still cause drops. The trade-off is visible atmosphere rather than character or environment detail.

Lower reflections and water quality for wet scenes

Reflection Quality affects glossy surfaces, windows, and wet roads. Water Quality becomes important around rivers, lakes, rain, and boats. Reduce these options when your slowdowns cluster around reflective surfaces or bodies of water. They are safer cuts than textures when VRAM is not the problem.

Use resolution scale when you need a direct FPS trade

RDR2’s resolution-scale control renders the 3D scene below or above the display resolution while keeping the interface at the window resolution. Lowering it can produce a large frame-rate gain when the GPU is saturated, at the cost of sharpness and fine detail. Raise it only after you have met your frame-time target with the expensive effects under control.

How to tune the remaining graphics options

Once MSAA, volumetrics, reflections, water, and resolution scale are set, work through the secondary controls in related groups. The table describes the usual reason to change each one; the visible result depends on your GPU, CPU, resolution, and driver.

Control When to lower or change it Image-quality cost
Temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) Use it instead of expensive MSAA when you need smoother edges at a lower GPU cost. More shimmer or softness, especially on distant foliage and motion.
Textures Lower only when VRAM usage is close to the card’s capacity or you see texture streaming problems. Blurrier materials and less detailed clothing, ground, and walls.
Lighting and global illumination Reduce when indoor scenes, sunsets, or complex light interactions are the bottleneck. Less convincing indirect light and weaker scene contrast.
Shadows and far shadows Lower when the GPU is busy in towns, forests, or scenes with many light sources. Shorter shadow distance and less defined shadow edges.
Ambient occlusion Reduce for a modest GPU saving after larger effects are tuned. Contact areas between objects look flatter.
Anisotropic filtering Change only if you still need a small adjustment; it usually has a modest cost on modern GPUs. Ground and road textures look less sharp at oblique angles.
Far-volumetric resolution Lower when distant haze and sky effects cause drops. Distant fog and light shafts lose definition.
Volumetric lighting Reduce after volumetric quality if shafts and atmospheric lighting remain expensive. Less pronounced god rays and atmospheric depth.
FXAA Use as a lightweight edge-smoothing option if you are avoiding MSAA. Can soften the image and does not remove all temporal shimmer.
Tessellation Lower when close geometry or terrain detail is a GPU limit. Reduced geometric roundness and surface detail.
Particles Lower for explosions, dust, smoke, and other effects-heavy scenes. Fewer or simpler particles during action.
Mirrors Reduce when interiors or reflective shop and train scenes are unusually slow. Lower detail in mirror views.
Triple buffering Adjust only in conjunction with your synchronization settings; it can change latency and memory use. Behavior depends on whether synchronization is enabled.

Do not lower every option at once. Group changes by the symptom you are solving: volumetrics for fog and smoke, water and reflections for wet or reflective areas, shadows and lighting for towns and interiors, and resolution scale for a consistently GPU-limited system.

Practical profiles by resolution and target frame rate

There is no authoritative 2026 model-by-model FPS table for RDR2 in the available evidence, so profiles should be treated as starting strategies rather than promises. Use the target in the first column, then validate the result on your hardware.

Target Recommended starting strategy What to protect First compromises
1080p at 60 fps Run the quality slider, disable MSAA, keep textures high if VRAM allows, and tune volumetrics, reflections, and water. Texture detail and native resolution. Volumetric quality, near-volumetric resolution, reflections, water, and selected shadows.
1440p at 60 fps Use the same priority order, then test a modest resolution-scale reduction if the GPU remains saturated. Stable frame times in towns and weather. Resolution scale, volumetrics, reflections, far shadows, and lighting.
4K at 30 fps Start with the quality slider’s performance side, avoid MSAA, and accept lower volumetric and reflection settings before reducing textures. Output resolution and readable materials. Resolution scale, volumetric effects, water, reflections, and shadow distance.
High-refresh display Choose a realistic cap based on benchmark results instead of chasing a number the game cannot hold in heavy scenes. Consistent frame times rather than a high peak FPS. Expensive effects and, if necessary, resolution scale.

PC Gamer reported roughly 30–60 fps at 1080p in 2019 testing with a GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 570 (or faster) and 4GB of VRAM. That is a dated baseline, not a current guarantee: patches, drivers, CPU balance, VRAM, settings, and the chosen frame-rate target can materially change the result.

Vulkan or DirectX 12?

RDR2 exposes both Vulkan and DirectX 12 under Advanced Graphics. Tom’s Hardware reported Vulkan as the most stable result across its tested systems, but API behavior depends on the graphics card, driver, operating system, and game build. A different API can be preferable if one produces crashes, shader compilation stalls, inconsistent frame times, or visual problems.

Change the API safely

  1. Close the game and its launcher completely.
  2. Open Documents/Rockstar Games/Red Dead Redemption 2/Settings/system.xml.
  3. Change the graphics API entry from Vulkan to DX12, or from DX12 to Vulkan, using a plain-text editor.
  4. In the same Settings folder, remove files whose names begin with sga_. They are rebuilt for the selected API.
  5. Launch the game, allow the first run to finish shader and cache work, and repeat the benchmark.

Compare the APIs using the same resolution, settings, and frame-rate cap. Judge average FPS together with frame-time consistency and whether the game remains stable after extended play; a higher benchmark average is not useful if it comes with repeated stalls or crashes.

Run the built-in benchmark correctly

The benchmark is the most repeatable way to compare settings, although it cannot represent every open-world location. Use it after each meaningful change rather than relying on a single quiet save-game area.

  1. Open Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Tests.
  2. Let all benchmark tests run without moving the mouse, switching windows, or changing settings.
  3. Select Exit Benchmarking when the sequence is complete.
  4. Inspect the saved results in C:Users[USERNAME]DocumentsRockstar GamesRed Dead Redemption 2Benchmarks.
  5. Record average FPS and any available low-frame behavior, then compare the same test after changing one group of options.

After the benchmark, load a demanding real-play situation such as a busy settlement, rain near water, or a smoke-heavy combat scene. The benchmark provides a reference; gameplay reveals streaming, traversal, and shader behavior that a fixed test may miss.

Fix stutter, stalls, and ERR_GFX_INIT

Update the graphics driver first

Install the current driver for your NVIDIA or AMD card before changing game files. Rockstar’s troubleshooting guidance links to both vendors’ driver pages. A clean, current driver removes a common variable when an otherwise unchanged configuration suddenly begins stuttering.

  • Featuring the complete single-player experiences of both games, Red Dead Redemption also includes bonus content from the Game of the Year Edition and more.

Reset the graphics configuration for ERR_GFX_INIT

  1. Exit RDR2 and the launcher.
  2. Open Documents/Rockstar Games/Red Dead Redemption 2/Settings.
  3. Delete the files in that folder, keeping system.xml.
  4. Relaunch the game and let it recreate the graphics-related files.

If the error began after switching APIs, edit system.xml as described above and delete every sga_ cache file before launching again. This forces the selected API’s cache to rebuild instead of reusing incompatible data.

Remove unintended launch arguments

Check the Rockstar or Epic launcher’s game properties for launch arguments you did not intentionally add. Rockstar identified a driver-related issue that affected some four-core and six-core systems; stray arguments can make diagnosis harder and may preserve an unsuitable rendering mode. Remove them, restart the launcher, and test a clean launch.

Separate shader stutter from a sustained GPU limit

A short hitch immediately after entering a new area can be cache or shader work. Multi-second stalls that repeat in the same scenes point to a configuration, driver, CPU, or streaming problem. If lowering volumetrics and resolution scale changes the benchmark but not the stalls, test the other API, reset the Settings folder, and verify drivers before lowering image quality further.

VRAM, CPU balance, and realistic expectations

Textures are primarily a VRAM decision, while shadows, lighting, volumetrics, reflections, and resolution scale are generally stronger first moves for a GPU-limited system. A card with enough VRAM can keep high textures while lowering atmospheric effects; a card near its memory limit may need lower textures to prevent streaming hitching. Monitor memory usage while visiting a demanding area rather than judging from the menu alone.

RDR2 can also become CPU-limited in busy towns or when simulation and streaming workloads rise. If lowering resolution scale produces little FPS improvement, the processor or game thread may be limiting performance. In that case, prioritize frame-time consistency, use a sensible cap, and avoid expecting lower texture quality to solve a CPU bottleneck.

A repeatable tuning checklist

  • Choose a resolution and realistic frame-rate target.
  • Run the quality slider once and save the resulting values.
  • Disable MSAA.
  • Lower volumetric quality and near-volumetric resolution for fog, smoke, snow, and light-heavy scenes.
  • Lower reflection and water quality for wet or reflective locations.
  • Keep textures high until VRAM use or streaming problems justify reducing them.
  • Use resolution scale only when you need a direct sharpness-for-FPS trade.
  • Run the complete benchmark after each settings group.
  • Test Vulkan and DX12 separately if one API stutters or crashes.
  • For ERR_GFX_INIT, reset the Settings folder, preserve system.xml, and remove sga_ caches after an API change.
  • Check drivers and launcher arguments before making further visual compromises.
