Recycled Polyester vs. Nylon Sportswear: Durability, Performance, and End of Life

Short answer: Neither fiber wins every sportswear decision. In a 2026 laundering study, the tested PET polyester fabrics kept their dimensions and tensile strength better than the tested nylon 6 fabrics, particularly at a harsh 60 °C wash. That result describes specific fabric samples, not every finished running top, leggings, or training shirt.

For an actual purchase, compare the garment’s construction, stretch blend, weight, care label, recycled feedstock, durability evidence, and realistic repair or recovery route. “Recycled” identifies material origin; it does not guarantee longer wear, superior workout performance, or successful recycling after use.

What the best current evidence actually compares

The most useful direct comparison available is an open-access study by Woo, Jin, Hong, Baek, Lee, and colleagues, published on 3 September 2026 in the Journal of Material Cycles and Waste Management. Researchers tested virgin and recycled PET polyester and nylon 6 fabrics, including mechanically and chemically recycled samples. The fabrics were made for clothing and included woven plain-weave and knitted single-jersey constructions.

The experiment repeatedly laundered fabric specimens at 40 °C and 60 °C, then measured physical properties and soil removal. The 60 °C condition was described as harsh. It was not a controlled trial of complete sportswear worn during running, cycling, weight training, or team sport. There was no head-to-head measurement of sweat management, drying time, odor retention, breathability, abrasion during exercise, seam failure, or wearer comfort.

That boundary matters. Fiber chemistry influences a garment, but knit or weave, fabric weight, elastane percentage, seam design, dyes, finishes, panels, and laundering habits can change the result you experience.

Durability: what happened in the laundering tests

Dimensional stability favored the tested polyester

PET samples changed size very little. Shrinkage at 40 °C was about 1–2%, and after the 60 °C treatment it remained around 1–3%. Nylon shrinkage was approximately 1–3% at 40 °C but about 8% at 60 °C.

An 8% change is substantial for a close-fitting garment: a waistband, inseam, or compression panel can become noticeably different. It should not be read as a prediction that every nylon item will shrink by 8%. The figure applies to the tested nylon 6 fabrics under that study’s wash protocol.

Tensile strength fell more sharply in nylon

At 40 °C, the nylon samples lost as much as 24% of tensile strength after 50 wash cycles. Under the 60 °C condition, tensile-strength loss reached 66%. PET retained strength better in the same experiment.

Test condition Tested PET polyester Tested nylon 6 How to interpret it
40 °C laundering About 1–2% shrinkage About 1–3% shrinkage; up to 24% strength loss after 50 cycles Lower-temperature washing was less damaging than the severe condition, especially for nylon.
60 °C laundering About 1–3% shrinkage and better strength retention About 8% shrinkage; up to 66% strength loss The study identifies 60 °C as harsh; these are fabric-sample results, not a universal garment-life forecast.

For a buyer, the practical lesson is to treat high heat as a risk for nylon unless the care label specifically permits it. Follow the garment’s instructions rather than converting this one experiment into a universal washing rule.

Recycled and virgin fibers did not behave identically

“Recycled” was not a single performance category. Mechanically recycled nylon deteriorated more than virgin nylon at 40 °C in the study, while chemically recycled nylon behaved comparably to virgin nylon in the tested samples. For polyester, the difference between virgin and recycled samples became more evident at 60 °C.

At that severe temperature, both virgin and recycled nylon were heavily affected, so the distinction between their feedstocks mattered less than the fact that the wash condition itself was damaging. The result does not establish that recycled nylon is inherently weak or that recycled polyester is inherently fragile; it shows that recycling route, polymer history, and test conditions can interact.

What the study says about cleaning performance

Different soils favored different fibers

PET removed water-soluble soil more effectively in the controlled tests. Nylon performed better with oily soil, while particulate soil was generally removed effectively from both. The authors attribute these patterns mainly to fiber and soil type, not to virgin versus recycled origin.

These findings can help explain why two shirts with similar labels may behave differently after a muddy workout or an oily sunscreen stain. They do not measure sweat-wicking, drying speed, odor buildup, air permeability, or thermal comfort. A fabric that removes a laboratory soil well is not automatically the best fabric for a hot run.

Does recycled polyester last as long as nylon?

There is no evidence here for a universal yes or no. In the available laundering comparison, the PET samples retained dimensions and tensile strength better than the nylon 6 samples, particularly at 60 °C. That supports choosing a well-made polyester garment when repeated washing at the labeled temperature is your dominant concern.

It does not prove that every recycled-polyester sportswear item will outlast every nylon item. A lightweight polyester jersey with weak seams can fail before a heavier nylon shell. Elastane can lose stretch even when the main fiber remains intact. Abrasion from a backpack, barbell, trail surface, or repeated washing may matter more than the polymer name.

The sources reviewed do not include a named sport-specific population study comparing the wear life of finished recycled-polyester and nylon garments. No reliable number of runs, training sessions, or years can be assigned to one fiber against the other.

Construction often matters more than the fiber label

When comparing two actual garments, inspect the features that determine how force and moisture move through the product:

  • Fabric architecture: Knits stretch and recover differently from woven fabrics. Jersey, interlock, ripstop, and mesh can have very different snag and abrasion behavior.
  • Fabric weight: A denser fabric usually offers more material to wear through, but may feel warmer and dry more slowly.
  • Elastane content: Stretch fibers can determine fit retention and may be the first component to degrade.
  • Seams and reinforcement: Bar-tacks, flat seams, seam tape, and reinforced stress points can prevent failure regardless of the base fiber.
  • Finishes and dyes: Water-repellent, wicking, anti-odor, and brushed finishes can change care requirements and durability.
  • Intended activity: A cycling jersey, yoga tight, trail short, and rain shell face different abrasion, stretch, and weather demands.

If a maker publishes abrasion results, dimensional-change data, or a repair policy for the exact product, those details are more useful than a generic claim that one fiber is “stronger.”

Environmental impact depends on the recycled pathway

What Textile Exchange’s 2026 polyester assessment covers

Textile Exchange published its Polyester Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Study page on 11 June 2026. The assessment covers resource extraction through fiber formation and examines virgin polyester plus thermomechanical and chemical recycling systems. Its data spans Europe, the United States, Southeast Asia, and China.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a production-stage assessment of polyester pathways, not a cradle-to-grave comparison of finished polyester and nylon sportswear. It identifies different hotspots:

  • Virgin polyester: Petrochemical inputs such as monoethylene glycol, purified terephthalic acid, and dimethyl terephthalate, together with electricity and heat.
  • Thermomechanical recycling: Electricity and collection of feedstock, including transport.
  • Chemical recycling: Energy and process chemicals, including methanol.

Impacts therefore depend on what is collected, how it is sorted and processed, the energy mix, chemical inputs, transport distance, and the boundaries used in the assessment. Textile Exchange’s Chief Impact Officer Beth Jensen said the study “marks a significant update to existing polyester LCA data” and is intended to improve decisions about preferred production systems. The assessment should not be simplified into “recycled polyester is always lower impact.”

A product-specific jersey comparison

A separate LCA commissioned by PUMA and conducted by Sphera in 2023 compared three sports jerseys in that company’s Turkey supply chain. It was described as cradle-to-grave and compared a virgin-polyester jersey, a jersey made with PET-bottle recycled polyester, and a RE:FIBRE jersey made mainly from polyester factory offcuts, faulty goods, and used clothing.

Jersey pathway Reported result versus the virgin-polyester jersey Scope and qualification
PET-bottle recycled polyester 13.19% lower carbon footprint per kilogram; water consumption 1.10% higher Specific jerseys and Turkey supply chain; reported 2023 LCA result.
Textile-derived RE:FIBRE polyester 7.31% lower global-warming-potential impact; water consumption 2.82% higher Specific jerseys and supply chain; made mainly from textile waste and production offcuts.
Textile-to-textile route PUMA reports a larger environmental footprint than mechanical recycling in this assessment Result applies to the pathways modeled in that study, not every recycling facility.

The bottle-derived result does not mean a bottle has been turned into a closed clothing loop. It is recycled material, but its feedstock is post-consumer PET packaging rather than discarded clothing. Textile-derived feedstock can avoid some virgin inputs, yet collection, sorting, contamination, energy, and process yield still determine the outcome.

End of life: recycled content is not a recycling guarantee

The system is still far from circular

The European Commission reports that about 5 million tonnes of clothing are discarded each year in the European Union, roughly 12 kg per person. It also reports that only 1% of clothing material is recycled into new clothing. The 1% figure concerns clothing material overall; it is not a separate polyester-versus-nylon rate.

The Commission’s 2030 vision calls for textiles that are durable, repairable, recyclable, and to a great extent made from recycled fibers. Its strategy also addresses microplastic release, design requirements, producer responsibility, reuse, and repair. Those policy goals do not mean that a garment bought today will automatically enter a closed-loop facility.

Why a technically recyclable garment may not be recovered

Actual recovery can depend on fiber blends, elastane, trims, zippers, prints, dyes, coatings, contamination, sorting technology, collection coverage, and the capabilities of a local processor. A pure fiber item may still be discarded if no suitable collection route exists. Conversely, a brand take-back program may accept a blended garment but send it to downcycling or another use rather than new apparel fiber.

The reviewed sources do not establish a directly comparable real-world collection-to-new-garment recycling rate for polyester sportswear and nylon sportswear. Do not infer an end-of-life outcome from the word “recycled” on the hangtag.

What a recycled-content standard can and cannot prove

EU Ecolabel textile criteria include a nylon production standard under which a qualifying fiber can contain at least 20% recycled pre-consumer or post-consumer nylon. The recycled content must be traceable from feedstock reprocessing through chain-of-custody certification or supplier and processor documentation.

This is a threshold and verification route. It is not a claim that all nylon sportswear contains recycled nylon, nor does it certify that an item will be recyclable after use.

How to choose between two sportswear garments

Use the following sequence when the products are in front of you. It prevents a recycled-content label from overshadowing fit, construction, care, and recovery realities.

  1. Read the complete fiber composition. Note whether the polyamide is identified as nylon 6 or another type, and record the percentage of elastane and other fibers.
  2. Inspect construction. Compare knit or weave, fabric weight, stretch, seam placement, reinforcement, pockets, closures, and areas that contact equipment or the ground.
  3. Identify the recycled feedstock. Look for post-consumer PET bottles, pre-consumer factory waste, post-consumer textiles, or another stated source. If the route is not disclosed, treat the claim as limited.
  4. Check care instructions against your routine. A garment that requires cold washing and air drying may last longer in your household than one you routinely expose to hot cycles, even if the latter fiber appears more robust in a laboratory test.
  5. Look for product-specific durability evidence. Prefer published abrasion, pilling, dimensional-stability, or repair information for the exact model over broad fiber marketing.
  6. Plan the use phase. Wash only when needed, use the stated temperature, avoid unnecessary heat, and repair small damage before it spreads.
  7. Verify the exit route. Check whether the maker offers repair, resale, take-back, or a clearly described recycling partner, and ask your local textile collector what it actually accepts.

Care practices that reduce avoidable damage

The laundering study makes high-temperature washing a particular concern for nylon, but the garment label remains the controlling instruction. To reduce wear across both fiber types:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use the lowest labeled temperature that removes the soil.
  • Close zippers and hook-and-loop fasteners before washing to reduce snagging.
  • Turn printed or brushed garments inside out when the care label allows it.
  • Keep rough equipment, towels, and abrasive denim out of the same load when possible.
  • Do not assume a dryer is safe because the fiber itself tolerates heat; elastane, coatings, and bonded seams may not.
  • Rinse sunscreen, salt, and chlorine promptly when the product’s instructions call for it.
  • Repair loose seams, small holes, and worn elastic before they become unrecoverable.

Care extends usable life, which is often more consequential than choosing between two similar virgin or recycled labels.

Common questions about recycled polyester and nylon sportswear

Which fabric is more durable for workout clothes?

The tested PET fabrics were more dimensionally stable and retained more tensile strength than the tested nylon 6 fabrics during repeated laundering, especially at 60 °C. Finished-garment durability in sport remains dependent on construction, blend, abrasion, and care, so the fiber result is a useful signal rather than a universal ranking.

Does nylon shrink in the wash?

In the 2026 experiment, nylon shrank about 1–3% at 40 °C and about 8% at 60 °C. Those values came from specific nylon 6 fabric samples and a controlled protocol. Follow the care label for the garment you own.

Is recycled polyester automatically better for the climate?

No. The environmental result depends on feedstock, collection and sorting, energy, process chemicals, transport, and the LCA boundary. One 2023 jersey assessment reported a 13.19% lower per-kilogram carbon footprint for PET-bottle recycled polyester than its virgin-polyester comparison, but that is not a universal conversion factor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can recycled sportswear be recycled again?

Possibly, but the outcome depends on composition, trims, finishes, sorting, collection, and available processors. A recycled-content claim describes what went into the garment; it does not promise that the garment will become new clothing after disposal.

Should I choose nylon or polyester for sweat and odor?

The laundering study did not test sweat-wicking, drying time, odor retention, breathability, or athletic comfort. Use product-specific fabric specifications and construction details rather than assuming either fiber always performs better.
