Fertilizers made from nutrient-rich streams collected by resource-oriented sanitation systems (ROS) produced crop yields comparable to conventional mineral fertilizers in a new analysis announced by the Institute for Social-Ecological Research (ISOE) on 13 October 2026. The finding means the recycled products studied were not inherently less effective, but it does not show that every fertilizer made from human excreta can replace every mineral product in every field.
What the study found
The researchers reported that yields from the recycled fertilizers examined had no systematic disadvantage compared with mineral-fertilizer treatments. Yields were generally significantly higher than in unfertilized controls. Performance still varied with nutrient form, soil, crop and management, so the result is best understood as evidence of comparable agronomic potential rather than universal product equivalence.

ISOE’s announcement describes a study by Corinna Schröder, Franziska Häfner, Ariane Krause, Moritz Hallama and Martina Winker, published as “Recycling fertilizers from resource-oriented sanitation systems: product-level characterization and meta-analysis of agronomic performance” in Frontiers in Environmental Science 14:1843173 (2026), DOI 10.3389/fenvs.2026.1843173.

The team assembled more than 450 data sets from over 200 sources in 32 countries. Thirteen recycled-fertilizer types had enough information for detailed product characterization. The separate quantitative agronomic meta-analysis comprised 134 data sets from 68 sources, covering 31 crop species and field, pot and hydroponic trials.

| Evidence element | Reported scope |
|---|---|
| Overall compilation | More than 450 data sets, over 200 sources, 32 countries |
| Products characterized in detail | 13 recycled-fertilizer types |
| Agronomic meta-analysis | 134 data sets from 68 sources |

These figures describe different parts of the work: the 134 agronomic data sets are not the entire characterization database.
What “recycled fertilizer” means here
ROS collect nutrient-rich streams from human excreta separately instead of sending all material through one conventional sewer stream. Those streams can be treated and processed into products intended for agricultural use. The resulting materials are not chemically identical: feedstock, separation method and treatment determine the nutrients and other properties that reach a farm.

- HOW TO APPLY: To apply, simply shake granules evenly on the soil, mix into the top 1-3 inches of soil in gardens or throughout the soil for potted plants, and water to start feeding
- COVERAGE: Approximately 3/4 - 1 cup of this organic plant food covers 20 sq. ft. of in-ground soil area, or 1 tbsp feeds one 6-inch potted plant
- ALL PURPOSE PLANT FOOD GRANULES: Miracle-Gro Organic All Purpose Plant Food grows healthier, more resilient plants (vs unfed plants, when used as directed)
- FOR OUTDOOR PLANTS: Use these garden fertilizer granules with most outdoor plants, including vegetables, flowers, annuals, and perennials growing in-ground or in containers
- FEEDS UP TO 3 MONTHS: This granular plant food feeds plants for up to 3 months and provides vibrant results in as little as 1 week (vs unfed potted plants)
Why product characterization matters
The announcement identifies several variables that can change how a recycled fertilizer should be used:
Recommended Free Tools
- Nutrient form and concentration: The amount and chemical form of nitrogen, phosphorus and other nutrients affect availability to plants and the appropriate application rate.
- Feedstock and processing: What entered the sanitation stream and how it was treated influence the final product.
- pH, salts and organic matter: These physical-chemical properties can affect soil conditions, crop tolerance and handling.
- Crop, soil and management: A product that works well in one crop or soil may need a different rate, timing or placement elsewhere.
For a real-world comparison with a mineral fertilizer, farmers and regulators would need product-specific nutrient analysis, the target crop and soil, the planned application method, hygiene information, contaminant testing and confirmation that local rules permit the use.

- Package contains 16 Pounds organic all purpose plant fertilizer grains and is produced to avoid wasteful runoff, mess, hazards and smells
- Plant fertilizer is formulated with a 4-4-4 NPK to provide vegetables, plants, and flowers nutrients they need for a high yield and vibrant foliage
- Jobe's organic fertilizer contains no synthetic chemicals and are OMRI listed for organic gardening by the USDA
- Application is simple and should be done every 2-3 weeks or as needed during the growing season
- Jobe's organic fertilizer is easily measured to provide the right amount of nutrients for vegetables, flowers, and plants without over fertilizing
What is known about safety—and what is not
In the products examined, heavy-metal concentrations were predominantly low and comparable to those reported for established fertilizers. That is a finding about the analyzed materials, not a blanket certification for every recycled product.
Hygienic safety depends particularly on the feedstock and treatment conditions. Evidence for organic contaminants, including pharmaceutical residues and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), remains incomplete and does not support a comprehensive assessment across all product groups. Buyers should therefore require current, product-specific testing rather than infer safety from the production category alone.

- Produce abundant and vibrant fruit and blooms! This product works by strengthening your plant's roots to increase nutrient uptake… enabling it to bloom and produce like you've never seen!
- Use on all flower / fruit / vegetable producing plants (we've seen amazing results with citrus trees, avocados, raspberries, cantaloupe, roses, petunias, etc… but this formula will work on a wide range of plants)
- Super, super concentrated - A little goes a LONG way (we recommend you dilute at a rate of 1 teaspoon per 2 gallons of water)
- Easy to use - simply dilute with water and pour or spray on your plants with their regular watering routine… repeat every 2-4 weeks
- Formulated especially for late season (late summer / early fall) application… this is exactly what your plants need in the later stages of the growth cycle
Can recycled fertilizer replace mineral fertilizer?
The study supports a conditional answer: it can be an effective nutrient source when its composition, treatment quality and use conditions are suitable. It does not establish a universal one-for-one replacement formula. A responsible substitution decision checks:

Martina Winker of ISOE summarized the principle: “What matters is what properties a fertilizer brings to the specific agricultural application, not whether it comes from a conventional or a recycled material stream.”

The remaining policy challenge
The authors argue that the central obstacle is now less about whether individual recovery processes can work technically and more about integrating ROS fertilizers into dependable quality-assurance and regulatory systems. Their priorities include comparable testing methods, robust quality criteria and organizational frameworks that let authorities and users evaluate products consistently.
ISOE notes that phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge and sewage-sludge incineration ash is already regulated within conventional wastewater systems, while comparable agricultural-use and approval pathways for resource-oriented sanitation systems are still lacking. The exact legal requirements remain jurisdiction-specific, so the announcement should not be treated as a complete survey of national or local law.
“The quality of the product should be the deciding factor—not the origin of the raw material,” said Ariane Krause of NetSan. The evidence therefore points toward standards and verified specifications, not an assumption that all sanitation-derived fertilizers are interchangeable.
What this means for farmers and policymakers
For farmers, the practical implication is to evaluate a recycled fertilizer as a defined product with a label, analysis and treatment history. For policymakers, the study provides support for building approval systems that compare products using the same agronomic, hygiene and contaminant criteria applied to other fertilizers. For researchers, the incomplete evidence on PFAS and pharmaceutical residues leaves a need for broader, comparable monitoring.
