Recuva is worth trying as a free first step when you have deleted a file from supported Windows storage—but it cannot guarantee that the file can be recovered intact. Stop using the affected drive, restore anything you find to a different drive, and check that the recovered file actually opens. Recuva’s capabilities are documented by its publisher, CCleaner; the available evidence does not establish an independent recovery success rate or show that Recuva outperforms other tools.
When Recuva is worth trying
Recuva is a Windows-focused file-recovery tool with a free edition. CCleaner says it can scan rewritable media such as a computer drive, memory card, external drive, or USB stick for deleted pictures, documents, videos, music, emails, and other file types. It also advertises recovery from damaged or newly formatted drives. Those are product capabilities claimed by the publisher, not proof that a particular file or drive can be recovered successfully. It is a reasonable first attempt when the storage is supported, the files were deleted rather than lost because of a failing device, and the material is not so valuable that an unsuccessful DIY attempt would be unacceptable. A scan may find a file without being able to restore usable contents.
What affects the chance of recovery
Deleting a file does not guarantee that its data remains recoverable. The outcome depends on factors including the file system, fragmentation, and whether later activity overwrote the relevant data. CCleaner says files that existed only briefly before deletion can be especially difficult to recover, and that continued drive activity makes overwrite more likely. CCleaner’s Recuva FAQ

For that reason, stop saving, downloading, or installing files on the affected storage where practical. This reduces further activity that could overwrite data; it does not guarantee recovery. If you find the file, save it to a different drive, not back to the location being scanned. CCleaner specifically recommends another drive to reduce the risk that recovery itself overwrites data still needed. CCleaner’s recovery guide
Will it work with your device?
CCleaner’s capability information lists NTFS, FAT, and exFAT drives. It says Recuva cannot recover all files and documents limits for several sources and connection types. Check whether your storage and connection fit before relying on a scan. CCleaner’s capability article

The product catalog lists Recuva v1.55 and Windows 10, 8.1, 7, Vista, and XP. A June 22, 2026 release announcement also identifies v1.55. Because these catalog details may not reflect later changes, check the current Recuva download page for the available version and supported Windows editions before installing; do not assume compatibility claims for other CCleaner products apply to Recuva. How to try recovery without making things worse
- Stop using the affected storage. Avoid saving, downloading, or installing anything there while deciding what to do.
- Check other copies first. Look in the Recycle Bin and the original backup or sync location; recovering an existing copy avoids scanning the source.
- Scan the relevant storage in Recuva. If a normal scan does not find the file, try Deep Scan. CCleaner says Deep Scan takes longer, so allow for additional scan time. CCleaner’s Deep Scan support article
- Restore to a separate drive. Choose another drive as the destination rather than the storage being scanned. CCleaner’s recovery guide
- Verify the result. Open the recovered file in the application that normally uses it and check its contents. A scan result is not proof that the file is whole and usable; damaged or partly overwritten data may remain unusable even after recovery.
What the paid edition adds
CCleaner lists a free edition and Recuva Professional. The product page describes Professional as adding virtual hard drive support, automatic updates, and priority support. These are added features and conveniences, not a guarantee of better recovery. The displayed price can change, so check the product page for current pricing and edition details. When Recuva may not be the right route
If the device appears to be physically failing, or the files are irreplaceable, avoid treating repeated scans as risk-free. The documented guidance does not establish a safe DIY procedure for failing hardware or endorse a particular recovery service. Consider getting qualified help appropriate to the device and the importance of the data.
Recuva is best understood as a practical free attempt for straightforward deleted-file recovery on supported Windows storage—not a repair tool, a guaranteed recovery method, or a proven market leader. CCleaner’s documentation explains features and limitations, but it does not establish an independent benchmark or a representative success-rate figure. Judge the result by whether the recovered file works, not simply whether its name appears in a scan.
