Recover Files From a Formatted Hard Drive and Prevent the Next Loss

If you formatted a hard drive by mistake, stop using it now. New activity can overwrite data the format left behind. If you try recovery, save recovered files to a different drive—not the formatted one. Tenorshare documents a scan-and-recover workflow for 4DDiG; Windows users also have Microsoft’s free Windows File Recovery utility. Neither can guarantee that files will come back. To reduce the risk of a repeat, keep separate backups and periodically check that you can restore them.

What to do first after formatting a drive

  1. Stop writing to the formatted drive. Disconnect an external drive once it is safe to do so. If it is an internal drive, avoid installing software, downloading files, or saving recovered items to it. Microsoft advises minimizing or avoiding computer use after data loss because routine activity can overwrite data marked as free. Microsoft’s recovery guidance warns that overwriting is a particular concern on SSDs.
  2. Decide whether the problem appears physical. A drive that clicks, beeps, repeatedly disconnects, or is not detected may have a hardware issue rather than only a formatting problem. Tenorshare says severe drive damage may require professional repair; recovery software is not a mechanical repair. If the data is irreplaceable or physical symptoms are present, stop DIY scans and consider a qualified recovery provider.
  3. Prepare a separate destination. Use another drive with enough space for recovered files. Do not install recovery software on the source or write recovered files back to it. Microsoft requires a different source and destination drive when using Windows File Recovery.

Formatting does not always erase every underlying file immediately, but recovery depends on what remains and whether it has been overwritten. Continued use can reduce the chance of finding usable data. No universal recovery probability is established for formatted drives.

4DDiG Tenorshare documents a graphical workflow to select a location, scan, preview results, and recover files. The company lists formatted HDD, SSD, and external-drive recovery among its use cases. These are vendor-described features, not independent proof of recovery performance. Confirm current compatibility and terms with Tenorshare’s hard-drive recovery information and its product information.
Windows File Recovery A free Microsoft command-line utility for Windows attempts involving local, external, and USB storage. It is more technical than a graphical workflow, requires a different destination drive, and may take time depending on drive size. Microsoft says to use Extensive mode for an NTFS disk after formatting; for FAT or exFAT, it recommends Extensive mode in any circumstance. See Microsoft’s instructions and mode guidance.
Professional recovery provider An escalation to consider when physical damage is suspected or DIY attempts pose too much risk. No specific provider, price, or success rate is established here; check credentials and terms directly before handing over a drive.

Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery documentation applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 and notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. For a Windows 11 user seeking a free attempt, the utility is an option, but it is command-line based and does not promise a successful recovery. The documentation does not establish that it is available for macOS. 4DDiG’s Windows and Mac offerings and supported formats can change, so check the vendor’s current compatibility details before installing.

Recover files with 4DDiG

Tenorshare’s documented process is to choose the location where the data was lost, scan it, inspect and preview found items, then recover selected files. Its hard-drive recovery guide describes that sequence. Treat it as the vendor’s workflow, not an independently tested result.

  1. Install and run the appropriate 4DDiG version from a different drive than the formatted source whenever possible.
  2. Select the formatted drive or relevant location as the scan source.
  3. Start the scan and review results. Where preview is available, inspect files before choosing what to recover.
  4. Recover selected files to a separate drive. Never choose the formatted source as the save destination.
  5. Open the recovered files from the destination and check that they are usable before relying on them.

Tenorshare’s pages list supported devices, file systems, and file types, but software capabilities can change. Confirm that the current version supports your drive and operating system on the vendor’s specifications page. The Windows product page advertises a 99.8% recovery rate, a five-minute average recovery time, and 100% security. Those are undated vendor marketing claims; the reviewed page does not establish their methodology or an independent measurement. They are not a guarantee or a reliable estimate of your odds after formatting.

Try Windows File Recovery for a free Windows attempt

Windows File Recovery is Microsoft’s command-line option for recovering files from local, external, or USB storage. Follow Microsoft’s current installation and command instructions rather than guessing a command: the correct mode and syntax depend on the file system and recovery situation.

If files are missing or unusable after a scan

An unsuccessful scan does not identify a single cause. One documented possibility is that data has been overwritten; Microsoft highlights the risk of further writes, especially for SSDs. If the files are irreplaceable, or the drive shows physical symptoms, stop repeated DIY attempts and seek a qualified provider. No recovery service is endorsed here.

Build a backup routine that survives a mistake

No single copy can protect data forever. Keep backups separate from the working drive so one mistaken format or device failure is less likely to affect both. Microsoft discusses cloud backup and external or network drives as options; cloud access may be convenient, while an external or network drive can suit large collections or situations where internet access is unavailable.

  • Keep a current copy on a separate external drive or another appropriate backup destination.
  • Where practical, disconnect an external backup when it is not being updated, reducing exposure to the same mistake or failure as the working drive.
  • Use cloud backup when it fits your access and storage needs.
  • Periodically restore a few files to confirm the backup is readable and current.

A Windows recovery drive is not a personal-file backup. Microsoft describes it as media for recovering Windows; it does not include personal files. Use a separate backup method for documents, photos, and other data. See Microsoft’s recovery-drive guidance and its overview of backup, restore, and recovery in Windows.
