If the file was permanently deleted and no copy exists, recovery from a Galaxy phone’s internal storage is not something Samsung’s published guidance promises.
1. Check Samsung Gallery’s Recycle bin
For a photo or video deleted from Gallery, open Gallery > Menu > Recycle bin, select the items, and tap Restore. Samsung says Gallery keeps deleted images and videos there for 30 days, but the Recycle bin must have been enabled before the deletion. Menu names and availability can vary by Galaxy model, software version, and carrier. Samsung’s Gallery recovery instructions describe the steps and retention period.

2. Check Google Photos’ Bin and account
Open Google Photos, switch to the Google account that may have backed up the file, and inspect its Bin. Samsung UK says Google Photos Bin items are permanently deleted after 60 days, while Google Photos Help describes cases where an item may be permanently deleted after 30 days, including an unbacked-up item. Retention depends on the item and backup status; check what the current Bin shows rather than assuming one period applies to every file.

If the file is not there because it was permanently deleted or the Bin was emptied, Google says it cannot be restored through that Bin. Its guidance notes, “If the item isn’t in your bin, it may be permanently deleted.” Google Photos Help: Free up space on your device.

3. Search for another copy before restoring a backup
A file missing from the phone may still exist in a cloud account, on a computer, or on removable storage. Check the account and backup dates before starting a restore.
- Google Photos on the web: visit photos.google.com while signed in to the account used for backup.
- Samsung Cloud or OneDrive: check Samsung Cloud backups and whether Gallery sync was configured with OneDrive. Syncing and device backup are different routes, so do not assume one includes everything in the other.
- Google device backup: review the available backup and what data it covers. Google says restore options vary by device and Android version, and some data is restored during setup of a new or reset phone. Not all apps back up or restore all their data. - Smart Switch on a computer: look for a backup made with Smart Switch on a PC or Mac. Samsung supports restoring selected categories from an existing computer backup; an absent backup cannot provide a copy. Samsung: Back up and restore data or files on your Galaxy phone or tablet.
- SD card or USB storage: check external storage if you previously saved the file or a Smart Switch backup there. Smart Switch backup folders on a PC may also contain certain media and document files that can be opened directly. Samsung Electronics Service Korea Smart Switch support.
4. Choose the restore route that matches the copy
Restore from the source that actually contains the missing file. Before applying a device backup, confirm its date and content categories; restoring settings or data is not the same as retrieving one isolated file.

- Samsung Cloud: use the Samsung Cloud restore option on the Galaxy device and select the available backup data you need.
- Google backup: follow the device’s setup restore flow if that is how the backup is offered. Google notes that restore depends on device and Android version; a backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored to a device running a lower version.
- Smart Switch computer backup: connect the phone to the computer with the existing backup, open Smart Switch, and select the restore option and categories available for that backup.
- External storage: use a compatible Galaxy model and supported SD card or USB OTG storage to restore files or a backup already stored there. Compatibility varies by model and accessory. An OTG drive provides storage; it does not scan the phone to undelete files.
Samsung’s backup and restore guidance covers Samsung Cloud, Google, Smart Switch, and external storage. Check that the backup contains the needed content before committing to a device-level restore.
5. What if the file is permanently deleted?
If the file is absent from both bins and all backups, expectations should be cautious. Samsung Electronics Service Korea stated in a 10 July 2020 support article that deleted-data recovery is unavailable for Galaxy S7/S7 edge and later because of file encryption. That is Samsung guidance from a specific region and date, not a guarantee about every forensic scenario or every storage situation. Samsung Electronics Service Korea: Can deleted data be restored?

The official materials cited here do not establish that a recovery app can reliably undelete permanently deleted files from modern Galaxy internal storage. Avoid factory-resetting the phone as a recovery step; it will not recreate a missing copy. If the file matters, preserve any remaining copies and contact Samsung support or a qualified data-recovery professional for advice specific to the model and storage involved.

Once the immediate search is over, enable the backup or sync route that fits the files you care about, and check that it is actually running. Gallery sync, Google Photos backup, device backups, Smart Switch computer backups, and copies on external storage cover different things. After setup, verify that a sample file is visible in the chosen backup location; a service enabled after deletion cannot recreate a file that was never copied.
